SERIE A ROUND 8

8 November 1998

Juve blow a 2-0 lead away to Udinese and there are also draws for Roma and
Parma. Lazio and Fiorentina chalk up 4-1 victories to leave things tight at
the top.

BARI 1-1 PARMA
Masinga 76 Fuser 46

Parma had a goal disallowed for offside? Veron hurled a Bari player to
the floor and then set-up Fuser for a goal. If the player hadn’t exaggerated
the fall maybe the ref would have gave a free kick. Usual Parma story,
they dominated possession but rarely tested Mancini. Masinga volleyed in a
poor clearance from a corner in what looked like Bari’s only attack. Fuser
was sent off for sticking his tongue out and giving the finger to Neqrouz,
honest, I’m not making this shit up! Neqrouz was sent off for er being on
the receiving end of Fuser’s abuse or something. Parma’s attack is so lame
even Masinga would probably score more goals for them than either Chiesa or
Crespo.

Red Card(s) : Neqrouz 62 (Bari), Fuser 62 (Parma)
Attendance : 17,782

BOLOGNA 1-1 ROMA
Signori 17 P Sergio 15

Delvecchio had a goal disallowed for offside. Paulo Sergio gave Roma the lead
with a header from Totti’s cross. Bia punted a ball upfield and Signori made
the most of a balls up in Roma’s defence to score his first league goal of
the season. Chimenti pulled off some incredible saves. Bia was sent off for
kicking Di Biagio’s arse.

Red Card(s) : Bia 59 (Bologna)
Attendance : 33,045

CAGLIARI 3-2 PIACENZA
Muzzi 20, 61 Buso 36
Kallon 54 S Inzaghi 57

Vasari was unlucky not to win the Norman Wisdom comedy moment of the week
for falling on his arse when attempting to take a corner. Muzzi scored with a
great overhead kick from O’Neill’s cross. Buso’s shot took a deflection on
the way to goal. Muzzi’s flick on seemed to be handled by a Piacenza player
but Kallon didn’t mess about and tucked the ball past Fiori. Inzaghi launched
himself off Pisanu’s back (Cagliari forward) and headed Piacenza level.
Cavezzi surged into attack and played a great through ball for Muzzi to score
with a first time shot and seal the 3 points. Muzzi struck the post with a
header, Stroppa hit the crossbar from a free kick.

Attendance : 18,000

FIORENTINA 4-1 VENEZIA
Padalino 22 Schwoch 42 (Pen)
Batistuta 40, 64
Rui Costa 62 (Pen)

The cameramen should be shot for using such wide angles. Padalino scored from
a tap-in after a goalmouth scramble. Rui Costa intercepted a ball for only
the second time in his career and picked up Batistuta with a great long
pass and he chipped Taibi. He looked miles offside. Gioacchini won a penalty,
Scwoch converted. Oliveira won a penalty for fouling Luppi and if you figure
that one out please let me know. Rui Costa converted and Batistuta grabbed
his second thanks to a great pass from Edmundo. Fiorentina missed three other
great chances as the pretenders storm back into top spot.

Attendance : 31,099

LAZIO 4-1 EMPOLI
Negro 22, 26 Carparelli 81
Salas 30
Mancini 61

Negro gave Lazio a two goal lead, the first a poke off Stankovic’s shot and
the second a sensational shot from outside the box. Salas closed down Sereni
as he attempted a clearance from a back pass, Sereni tried to dummy Salas but
ended up smashing the ball of the Chilean’s legs. Nedved set away Mancini on
three occasions with glorious passes and the fraud finally converted at the
third attempt. Carparelli scored from Pane’s pass. An outstanding display
from Nedved, he should be at a more prestigious club.

Attendance : 35,000

PERUGIA 3-1 VICENZA
Rapaic 26 Ambrosetti 30
Nakata 52 (Pen)
Melli 74

Rapaic headed in Ze Maria’s cross. Brivio launched a goal kick, Zauli and
Schenardi combined for Ambrosetti to equalise. Rapaic won a penalty and
Stovini was sent off for the challenge. Looked a legit penalty. Nakata
converted twice, the ref ordered the kick to be re-taken. Multiple reject
Melli whacked in a loose ball for Perugia’s third.

Red Card(s) : Stovini 51 (Vicenza)
Attendance : 15,000

SAMPDORIA 1-0 SALERNITANA
Ortega 50 (Pen)

Ortega dive, Ortega penalty and 3 points. Incredibly Sampdoria are the only
team to keep a clean sheet this week. Lassisi was harshly sent off for
clearing the ball with a player on the floor. Another off the charts display
from Ortega, the chipped pass he gave to Palmieri has to be seen to be
believed.

Red Card(s) : Lassisi 80
Attendance : 34,500

UDINESE 2-2 JUVENTUS
Bachini 65 Zidane 43
Sosa 94 Inzaghi 49

Zidane headed Juve in front from Birindelli’s cross and then, like a twat,
jumped and fell off the advertising boards. Inzaghi made it 2-0 with a poke
off Tacchinardi’s shot. A quick corner from Walem caught Juve cold, midget
Bachini with the header. Walem also had a hand in the equaliser, a long pass
flicked on by Amoroso and finished off by Sosa. Amoroso was booked for diving
in the box. If he didn’t make a meal of the challenge he probably would have
won a penalty but it was a strange decision given the ref was awarding free
kicks to Amoroso for blatant dives outside the box. Ferrara was back, Juve’s
defence still sucked.

Attendance : 33,000

MILAN 2-2 INTER
Weah 12 Ronaldo 6
Albertini 59 (Pen) Moriero 48

A superb long pass from Moriero was beautifully killed by Zamorano and he
fed Ronaldo for his first league goal from open play this season. Bierhoff
and Weah linked superbly for Milan’s first although West got his foot to the
ball he couldn’t prevent Weah from scoring. Ronaldo didn’t start the second
half. Pagliuca pulled off a miracle save to deny Bierhoff. Moriero turned and
shot past Rossi from Djorkaeff’s cross, he was miles offside. Milan won a
penalty when Ganz was flattened by Colonnese, just teasing Riff! It was the
second forward fouls the defender but wins a penalty of the week. Albertini
scored his first league goal since the first derby of last season. Weah was
denied by another of Pagliuca’s Hollywood saves. Milan had the better of the
second half. Zac is making the same mistakes as Capello and picking crap
players when better talent sits on the bench. Boban and Albertini are
hopeless together and leave the team weak in the centre of midfield,
Ambrosini’s tackling could have made the difference. Costacurta is too old,
too slow and sucks too much.

Jealous and insecure Milanista.

Otherwise, thanks for the thoughtful reports. I do appreciate reading them.

No he wasn't -- if you get a chance to watch the replays, watch
the flank and you will see Moriero make a beautiful run from the
outside. He was NOT offsides.

Also, Zamorano was taken down in the first half and no call from the
incompetent boob Tombolini. What a farce of a game he officiated. The
RAI website gave him a "5" and I think that was charitable. Another thing,
Ziege blatantly kicked Pagliuca -- the official's "reaction" to that trans-
gression was laughable.

You better be teasing....what a fargin' dive.

This was sickeningly like the penalty awarded to Inzaghi against Inter
two weeks ago - in both cases the offensive player was actually the
one who initiated the foul.

Unfortunately, it is also very true that in both cases the Inter defender was
really *stupid* in aiding the offensive player. Why in hell a defender would
trail an attacker vectoring *away* from the goal!?!?! Why don't they try
to get between the goal and the ball? Trailing the attacker only
encourages actions like Ganz and Inzaghi took - stopping or backing
into the defender, forcing the dork defender to run up the back
of the attacker. The resultant collision nearly always goes the
way of the offensive player. So, really the fault in the situation is still that
of the defender - what makes me sick is that the foul isn't. A lot of
people say that this is okay, that an attacker "earns" these kinds of
fouls. To those of you who believe that I say this -- @#$%@#$!!!

> scored his first league goal since the first derby of last season. Weah was

Why not just call them good - the man's earned that. You
make it sound like it's some showboating on his part. He isn't
a Campos showboat, he is just trying to do whatever he can
to stop the ball. Pagliuca was superb -- and I desperately hope
this will be the last game for a while that he has to be incredible
in the nets. And it may be desperate that hope.... :-(

WHAT!?!?! Boban and Albertini played as well as they have
played in a long, long time. Especially Zvoni -- who was a real
force for Milan, especially in the second half.

> Ambrosini’s tackling could have made the difference. Costacurta is too old,

Ambrosini doesn't have the skills of Boban certainly, and at
least Albertini can shoot, something Ambro has never been
accused of. Ambrosini is a worker -- and Milan needs a
creator desperately (like a few others clubs as well....)

Costacurta is on borrowed time. Maybe he should
just be a coach now.

..... Moriero was not even close to being offside, he made a perfect run, the Milan
defence was just so bad it made it seem as though he had to have been offside to
be that wide open.

>Also, Zamorano was taken down in the first half and no call from the

.....Tombolini, a promoted ref from Serie B, after another one of his comedic outings,
should be demoted to that league just as fast.
Having the benefit of watching La Domenica Sportiva su il RAI International, it is blatantly
obvious that Tombolini is totally inconsistent, and incompetent. RAI has a segment on
the show called "Movieola", which investigates all of the controversial calls with replays.
Watching the moviela's of this game leaves one wondering what Tombolini was thinking
about during the game. The blatant kick by Ziege on Pagliuca was definately a bookable
offence, if not a sending off. Tombolini? Nothing? The no call on Costacurta's tackle of Zamorano in the first half, was a frigging
joke. Costacurta making no attempt to play the
ball, clearly takes Zamorano down with his left leg, Tombolini is 5 feet away and refuses
to blow the whistle. Maybe send Tombolini to doping control. This idiot's crowning glory,
the penalty call on Collonese, who has his back to Ganz after having his shirt almost pulled off by Ganz, and then Ganz falls down
on his own tripping Collonese. Brutal.

Milan may have created more scoring chances in the second half, but it sad to say that
Inter have once again fallen victim to the decision of a referee, which has decided the
outcome of the game.

What a calm player Nakata is !
The first was not getting a gol because someone rushed into the penalty
arch.
At that time , I remembered Suker for Croatie . He also trid penalty
twice from the same reason in the mutch against Roumanie in France '98.
Suker shooted to the same corner twice, and scored.
Nakata was different . He converted twice, and calmly done!
He kicked slowly like looking down on the goal keeper.

As I said before they suck TOGETHER. Boban has been Milan's best player
for the past two seasons although that isn't saying much. My views on
Albertini are well known.

They have Boban. Ambrosini will help out a dodgy defence. Scoring hasn't
been a problem this season.

The first replay I saw showed nothing of the beginning
of the run. Then I saw a more complete one and it was
obvious Moriero had timed the run well and that the
Milan defense was absolutely fast asleep.

I predict that Ziege (if he plays) will steer clear of Simeone in
the return derby. Which will make his poor play even poorer.
Keep up the cheap shots Christian, it makes you an even
more crap player!

Hmm....I wonder why I might be tense (not at you, but
because of this joke of a official, who should wear a red
clown nose in his next game)

Well, if you had to withstand a derby in which the referee not
only awards a penalty on a blatant dive (Ganz admitted to at
least two Inter players that he dove), he also denies a legitimate
penalty to Zamorano, calls a nonexistent offsides on a play that
could have been an Inter goal.....and the Ziege cleating.

It's not a conspiracy -- Tombolini just sucks gigantically.

Now do know why I am tense?

> As I said before they suck TOGETHER. Boban has been Milan's best player

Albertini was actually quite good -- the best I have seen
him in a long time. Milan held most of the ball in the
second half thanks to him and Boban.

And heck, Albertini even made a penalty.

Too bad it was several months too late for Italy.

> They have Boban. Ambrosini will help out a dodgy defence. Scoring hasn't

Albertini is judged as a pretty good midfielder in terms of
getting back to help. I think Milan's problems on defense
started with the crap play of Ziege.

Well he is definitely too old to be a player.

Yes, the prospect of Capello as coach. Short term he'll be great long

Same for Milan.

About the first sentence -.

Heavens, I hope that this persistent rumor is not true.
The whispers are that Moratti has already retained a
manager for next season -- if those rumors are true
I just hope that manager is named "Lippi" and not "Capello.

About your second sentence -

Well, I agree with the second part of it at least.

When one considers that nearly all of those ball wins
are after he has given the ball back to the other team,
it is not so impressive.

He tackles, wins the ball and passes to the nearest team-mate. He only

Why, God, why? Parreira hasn't shown the ability to win anything,
unless he's associated with Brazil (club or national)...

These are the names I have heard:

1) Lippi
2) Capello
3) Parreira
4) Suarez (caretaker position only)
5) Cruyff

I agree with those who say Lippi is not committed yet
for next season. He can bide his time and pick the
highest bidder -- he could even take a year off and
people would be lined up around the block to hire
him. I know I would in a heartbeat (no genius do I
need to be to realize this!)

Capello wants the Inter job so bad I think he should
adopt the vulture as his mascot. He slowly circles the
grandstand at San Siro, waiting for Simoni to expire.
Personally I hope someone mistakes him for a game
bird and blasts off a couple rounds of double-aught
in his general direction.

Parreira doesn't particularly interest me, but I would
prefer him to Capello. Then again, I think I would
take Savonarola over Capello. (And no, Savonarola
wasn't the manager at Juve Stabia last season, he
was *a* manager in Italy all right, but not last season
anyway......)

Suarez would just be a caretaker manager until a
full-time manager was signed. This would help avoid
the dreaded "Cold Capello" effect in which all players
attempt to assasinate their manager during practice.
But due to the poor marksmanship displayed so far
by Inter attackers, they all miss.......

Cruyff? Yeah, sure -- just what the doctor ordered for

help your circulation and cheer your outlook on life!

Finally someone recognizes Nedved's awesome talent.

Here are some NEDVED NOTES:

- He is one of the best and most underated midfielders in the world
because he plays for Lazio and the Czech Rep. (also one of the main
reasons the Czechs made the Euro'96 final).

- He scored 10 goals in Serie A last season, tops on Lazio.

- Lazio president says out of all his players this year he is the only one
"not for sale at any price"!

- His brother plays hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL.

Because Inter are desperate or maybe the media are starting stupid
rumours again, hey why don't Inter sign Roy Evans, he's available!

I'd much love to see Lippi in Spain. Or what about Liverpool?
Anywhere but in Serie A.

Why don't you do it, c'mon Riffster! :-)

Capello is not the man for Inter. No matter how hard he tries, he'd
never be able to impose structure on those group of players.
They're just not the right bunch to adhere to Capello's rigid 4-4-2.

Non-sequitor.

Geez, can't they get a better caretake manager than the one who
managed to get Inter eliminated by Lugano? He wasn't that great
coaching Spain either. I bet there's a reason Suarez is a director.

Actually, this may not be a bad idea. If Zeman could do the trick
for Roma, why not repeat the experiment on a bigger scale, with
Cruyff? Of course, whether he'd take the job, as you stated, is
another question.

6. Passarella

I've seen this name pop up oonce every often. He's not as bad a
coach as many make him out to be; his failure was in attempting to
run a national team like a club. But Inter is a club! With
Argentina, el Adoquin might not have selected the best players, but
the team had a definite structure, the players were disciplined and
motivated, and the quality of play ranged from good to excellent.

Also, being an ex-interista, he'd have a head start on fans'
affection.

I'm sure he'd fit right in with the Milan philosophy of ruining good
talent. But thankfully, the rest of the world is spared: Parreira signed a
contract today with Fluminense! Yes, everyone's favorite 3rd Division
Tricolor... and he says he wants to buy Bebeto to organize his offense
around. Good luck dreaming.. Flu can't even afford to pay the electric
bills at their own stadium, much less buy Bebeto.

Maybe that is why I would love to see him
remain in Italy. Well, it is one reason why I
would like to see him stay in Italy. The other
is to keep him from the clutches of that evil
clan of Madrilenos.

Okay, let me say this, in this politically correct
world one has to be careful to say the right
things -- I was only kidding about anyone
taking another but verbal shots at Capello.
I dislike the man and find him more rigid than
the Rock of Gibraltar, but he has the right to
exist and to continue to subsume into the
continental crust like any self-respecting mass
of granite.

Capello and Inter players? Are you kidding me?
Abso-friggin'-lutely no way!

Well, then maybe Mario Corso. And what about Tarcisio
Burgnich?

Cruyff as coach? I would not recommend it if his
health is in the least bit questionable.

And he has a head start on it all with Simeone
and Zanetti. And there are still more than a few
Inter fans who remember him in black and blue.

As they say, having a good head start sometimes
only means that you have built a good head of
steam for them to boot you in the boot on the
way out the door.

Nakata *is* the player-coach of Perugia.

I absolutely agree with you. As a Liverpool supporter currently worried about
their team, Nedved would be the *first* player I'd go after. I'd pay up to 10
or 12 million for him. He's one of those players who has the class, can pass,
be evasive, tackle and most importantly, work his socks off.

Even at £20 million he's good value.
