I am a ex-Celtic fan but still Celtic sympathiser and an absolute
fanatical Scotland supporter. I'm a fully paid up member of the Tartan
Army and travel to as many away games as I can afford.

It is an observation of mine that there are not too many Celtic
supporters who support the National Team, and, similarly, there are not
too many supporters of the Scottish National Team who are also Celtic
supporters.

Any suggestions as to why this might be - apart from the usual
Scotland/Protestant/Masonic conspirancy mantra?

That's bollocks!!

Almost ALL of us support Scotland in one way or another! We may also like
other National teams, but primarily it's Scotland first for almost ALL of
us!!

And what a great result tonight, after all WE should have been there in the
first place after our play-off games!! The English were crap, and we were
pretty good in qualifying.

I have been a Celtic and Scotland supporter all my days. Travelled with both
the TA and CSC to games on foreign soil.
I can say though that a lot of Scotland supporters I have met are not from
either side of the old firm. Maybe being a fanatic most of the year takes
too much out of us ;-)

I have no idea where you're coming from pal but as a Celtic/Scotland
diehard I must assume you live on a different planet. There are scores,
if not hundreds of Celtic fans who, like myself, are in the Scotland
Travel Club. I, in my travels to three World Cups and many other away
games, have spent many happy times with fellow Tims at Scotland games.

My own CSC (Brother Walfrid CSC, Edinburgh) had almost half our
membership in Prague last year supporting Scotland. Surely you must be
talking about Huns: an endangered species in the Tartan Army.

Phew.

I thought that my post was a fairly innocuous question, but, wow, what
an array of replies.

Willie TamesideEmeraldCSC.org.uk

Willie, that's a helluva surname. Have you never thought of changing
it? You said "That's Bollocks". By that I assume that you disagree with
my inference. Nevertheless my perception is real.

9Volts

I suppose that being fanatical about two organisations does take it out
of one. I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Ronnie the Tim

Thanks for calling me "pal". After such a short acquaintance, too. You
don't know where I'm coming from. I simply stated my observation after
20 years of following Scotland home and abroad.

Nick

You seem to think that since I'm an ex-Celtic fan I never was a Celtic
fan. I don't agree with your hypothesis. The explanation is that my
current life-style and geography don't allow me to attend matches and
support the team. That's why I said "I'm still a Celtic sympathiser" ie
I don't actually support the team by either paying entrance money or
shouting them on, but , by God, I'm still right behind them.

Tony

Please refer to the above.

Greigy

Your contribution was just on the acceptable side of relevant. Please
refer to the answer to Nick. Are you sure that you really should be
contributing to a Newsgroup where most of the contributors can do
joined up writing?

Bob

Most Scotland supporters are Rangers supporters? Not in my experience.
Older friends of mine can remember when that was the case and Celtic
players in Scotland shirts were booed at Hampden. This is not my
experience. I seldom come across Rangers supporters travelling abroad
to support our country. (Probably too ashamed of the Union Flag, Rule
Britannia and God Save the Queen - oops, sorry. I'll put my nails away
now)

I'm sorry if I've upset anyone. It wasn't my intention.

So the greatest fans in the world would turn their back on the team, and only
support them when they are winning? They would accept watching attendances
tumble to,let's say the 3 or 4,000 mark(although if you count up the people
who said they were there, the crowd was 80,000),until the club they support
part-time,just as a hobby,as long as they are winning, decide to do
something,to entice their 'customers' back? Are you a Rangers
customer,Greigy?Or are you one of the real 5,000 fans?

Scotland or Eire?? Surely your not making these assumptions because Willie
is a celtic supporter :-) If thats the case then questions must be asked
about your national team loyalty then Greigy. Scotland or England?
As your obviously a supporter of the darkside then you probably follow
England. Flying the same flags, sing the same songs, and when it comes to
taking on the germans at penalties.... ;-)

The most frustrating thing about Scotland's Euro 2000 campaign was we didn't
even NEED to beat the Czechs. We could have lost 10-0 home and away against
the Czech Republic and as long as we had managed to get the results against
the other teams in our group (and lets face it there weren't any) we would
have qualified as best runners-up without needing to win a play-off

Meanwhile Craig Brown tells us all how great he is for masterminding a
victory against the Germans in a friendly, then a few a short months later
tells us they are the worst German team for years.....as if anyone didn't
know that after the England - Germany game.

Oh and wee Craigie also said the Czech Rep. and England (both on their way
home after the 1st round) were two of the best teams in the tournament
before it started ....couldn't have anything to do with the fact it was them
(along with the likes of fucking Latvia and Estonia) who knocked us out,
could it ?

I wonder if any of the newspapers will ever pull him up for all this crap he
talks ....or just let him away with it as usual.

I'm not sure that that is true. I've stopped going to Scotland games because
they're so bad. No other reason. I'm also not sure if that many Rangers fans
support Scotland. It seems to me that most of the support is made up of
Partick Thistle, St Mirren fans etc. I suppose after watching teams like
that Scotland must be exciting. ;-)

At least tree-quarters kept going even when the league was over, and almost
48,000 were at the last game. How many would be at Ibrox if they were 20
points behind Celtic? Come to think of it, didn't the crowd at Ibrox dip

It pains me to agree with a hun, but celtic are nowhere near the greatest
fans in the world!!! They walk out 10 minutes from time every time they are
loosing.

In my humble (unbiased ;-)) opinion, last season Aberdeens fans have shown
themselves to be by far the best fans. I'm talking about spirit and not

Therefore SOME (small minority) fans maybe actually english or identify
with england, as opposed to a club ethos which identifies with another

Suprisingly the wee slimey,two-faced,money grabbing fuck wanted Celtic to
win over Rangers(in an interview a year or two ago),and said he still had an

OK 30 flags plus 12 banners = 42 people with an english affiliation.
Rangers were given (i think) 17,000 tickets.
Well, f*ck me, if you don't think 42 out of 17,000 is not a minority
then you are as thick as the wool on your girlfriend's back.

We don't all fly the english flag.
Indeed one recent survey revealed that only around
42 in 17,000 rangers fans do.

Dinnae be daft. If the a=tartan army turned up to a game with 100
scotland flags between 20,000 supporter, would that then mean thet there

There you go again you daft twat.
You simple do not understand arithmetic and ratios.
I am sure that there are a number if supporters of rangers who have
unfortunately been born without fully functional digits.

Two points:

I deduce that you meant to use an "it" in your first sentence! ;-)

So it's the GFIT part you don't get?? So how'd you get the OF part?
Were you also able to deduce what the W in GFITW meant??

Foolishly I made the assumption that since the term GFITW had already
been used in the thread - and you had not asked for an explanation -
you knew what it meant. How silly of me!

The Greatest Fans In The World tag is widely used (mostly by huns 'n
hacks) and been explained several times before on this NG. I've
never proclaimed Celtic fans to be TGITW myself or even heard more
than a handful of tims use it.

As for my powers of deduction...well let's see. I deduce that since
you make statements (off the top of my head - I'm sure there's more)
akin to "pulling on shirts isn't a foul" and "most Scottish fans are
Rangers supporters", you know very little about football at all.

I'd agree with that. I also noticed during that Panorama program about the
English hooligans that their support seemed to be a lot more club oriented -
you'll notice that all their banners at matches have their teams on them.
That's something I don't think you get with the Scotland support.

Well your post seemed to indicate that you had a dislike for those
unfortunates
cursed with disabilities through no fault of their own, in fact you seemed
to
enjoy it, however, if that is not what you meant then I will take your word
for
it.

With regards to neanderthals, it is universally accepted that they died out
long ago - you'r still spouting pish!

On a more serious point. It would be fool-hardy to suggest that there is no
hooligan element in most british team's support. However, to suggest that
these people from rangers/celtic/another are in anyway a majority tells me
more about YOU than them. YOU REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND
THE WORD MAJORITY DO YOU?

No.
It is correct that many people can have a flag but so can just one person.
This places bounds one the numbers of those with affiliations to england.
Would suggest that 100 people per flag is way too high perhaps 10
would be a reasonable figure.

Nonetheless, let's play your bizzarre little game and assume 100 people
per flag. That gives us 4200 with an english affiliation.

Since you are obviously as thick as your girlfriends wool, I will spell this
out real easy.

Rangers got 17,000 tickets.
50% of 17,000 = 8,500.

If the number with an english affiliation is greater than 8,500 then they
are the M-A-J-O-R-I-T-Y.

Bah, bah, bah,

INCORRECT !!!!!!!!!

There were many scotland flags.
Which negates the rest of your argument.

I did not see ANY scotland flags in the nu end (plenty in the dons
end)...even if there where some, the number of english flags far outnumbered
them...Which still kinda suggests that the majority of rangers fans are
either english or england fans....

What???? Nowhere did I say anything about "people per flag" I don't give a
shit how many people there are per flag!!! What i am pointing out is the
balance between english related flags, banners etc compared to the number of
scottish ones. You are really beginning to show your stupidity here and i'd
suggest you back down before you make a complete idiot of yourself.

Thanks

I didn't know the acronym.

Regarding the tugging shirts. I am no expert in refereeing but I have a
friend who is a qualified ref.
He has told me that there is no rule against shirt pulling, per se.
There is a rule on obstruction, therefore if you pull someone's shirt but
don't
impeed/obstruct them then it is not a foul.
This may explain why many refs ignore short pulling.
As I have said this is second hand knowledge.

Agreed. Anyone who had to rely on primarily first hand knowledge would
have a very narrow outlook on life, like yourself.

Anyone who studies/reads etc. is learning from others. I see that as a
strength
not a weakness.

Mind you it is easy for me to think that since I come from a large
cosmopolitan
city with universities and art galleries. Great sources of learning.

What can you learn from sheep? Oh well there's 'that' I suppose.
