Hi,
I'm looking for some Web hosting recommendations. I've got a couple of
sites (www.darrenbarefoot.com, www.webservile) and will be starting
another. With my current hosting company (www.dollarhost.com), I have
to pay a minimum of CAN $25.00 a month to get what I need. I'd rather
not pay CAN $75 for the three sites if I can avoid it.

My requirements are:

* Access to the server logs
* Web stats engine
* At least ten POP3 accounts
* At least 100 MB of disk space
* All the tasty extensions that I may use: perl, PHP, SQL, etc.

I'd prefer that the company was Canadian, but that's not a
requirement. Any suggestions? And, yes, I have considered running my
own Web server, but frankly, I can't be arsed. Thanks. DB.

I use www.canwebhost.net for my business. I host several websites through
them. They are very cheap, you can host multiple domains and subdomains,
their tech support is great and there have been no problems in the two years
I've been with them. I did a lot of research on various webhosts when I was
looking around and they offered the most features for the best price.

Thanks for this. I must confess, though, the big American flag on the
home page put me right off. DB.

I used them for a little while and found that my sites were down for about
1-3 hours atleast 2 or 3 times a week.

I kept asking them to look into it, but they weren't too helpful on it

Might check into: www.blacksun.ca or www.affordablehost.com

I've found that with hosting, a large part of it is also the amount of
traffic you can get...

I've seen places that offer PHP and MySQL for as low as $2.50 a month... but
you only get something like 500MB of traffic per month with that

As another thought... you might look into hosting yourself...

For $70 a month you can get a static IP from telus with the Small Business
ADSL account, that would cover your home internet access as well.

To run your service, you can buy a 1.8ghz computer with everything built
into the motherboard for $400 (+ monitor).

For the software... Operating System, PHP, MySQL, mail server, etc... Its
all free for download now and there are lots of other options you can
download and thousands of walkthroughs and FAQs on the net you can find for
installing and customizing it for your needs

yes it can be taken at least two ways - I've seen movies about that sort of
thing.

In the name of research, of course.

you wouldn't believe the "what's legal" and "what's illegal" rules for
that stuff.. i have a friend who works in customs and he has to watch
porn all the time to see if it passes certain really weird arbitrary
standards.... i could make a list with some examples... but it would
be quite rude...

I use www.dreamhost.com, and have for five or six years, without a single
problem that wasn't my own damned fool fault...

LOL... there's an SFU co-op job doing just that... I actually got
offered a position, but decided watching porn all day, every day, for
4 months straight would probably skew my perspective of the world in
some very damaging way :)

Yeah - I have a friend like that too. Only he's unemployed.

I've seen stories on people like that - what a strange strange job.
I used to wonder what it would be like to just watch porn all day -
then they invented this interent thing, and now I wonder what it would be
like not to.

Several years ago, I went to Ottawa to work for Nortel. At the orientation
(~700 new hires... those were the days), they showed us a video of Nortel
propaganda, which ended with the not-yet-released new slogan "What do you
want the internet to be?"

The guy behind me yelled out "Streaming porn!"

Judging by the current state of the internet, they must have made him VP or
something.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. I do indeed have the tech-savvy to set up
my own server, and would like to do it some time. Currently, however,
I don't have the time. So, for now at least, I'm going to go the
hosting route. That way, I can set up a Web server at my leisure.
Cheers. DB.

As far as best service and technical know-how out there (as far as I've ever
seen), check out:

www.baremetal.com

They're located in Victoria, everything is local and Tom is probably one of
the best UNIX/Linux guys out there. They are also quite flexible about
providing what you need. If it isn't listed on their 'menu' you are invited
to ask for it chances are they'd do it for you.

They are class all around, never had a lick of trouble with them and I've
hosted many a domain with them.

Fearsome.
