He said he's sticking with his blueprint, and won't trade away hig picks or
young players. Umm is it just me or are most Canuck draft picks been awful.
The Avs yearly pick near the bottom, and always have good prospects that
are either kept or dealt for star players. With the Nucks track record, I
could care less about the top picks, considering most don't pan out anyways.
As for their young prospects, they pretty much have none outside of
Umberger. The Hockey News rated the Nucks 30th in the league in terms of
prospects, and don't forget we've usually had top 17 picks.

Actually, that wasn't nice. Sorry. But really, look at the standings.
Burke isn't doing that bad of a job. Whether he makes a move tomorrow or
not - I think we have to trust that the Canucks are in good hands.

Four years ago, when we were stinking the joint out on a nightly
basis, and had luminaries like Steve Staios, Jason Strudwick and Dave
Gagner taking a regular shift, the Hockey News had us ranked near the
top of their prospects list. You know what? I like today better.

Could not have said it better myself.

Now, now, Aflow. While it's true the Canucks have made some
terrible draft picks over the years, the man who helped make many
of them, ex-chief scout Mike Penny, left in 2000 and was replaced by
beloved ex-Canuck goon Ron Delorme. As for our current crop of prospects,
it's not totally barren. Most of them are still some ways from breaking
in to the NHL, which I think is that basis of the Hokey News ranking,
but I think that's a good thing considering our current roster is still
not that old.

Goal
Alex Auld (22) - traded ? to ?
Lukas Mensator (19?)

Defence
Rene Vydareny (21)
Tomas Mojzis (20) - traded ? to Toronto
Mikko Jokela (23) - traded Kariya to NJ
Kiril Koltsov (20)

Forward
Fedor Fedorov (21)
R.J. Umberger (20?)
Nathan Smith (21)
Brandon Reid (22)

If Penny left in 2000, don't tell me he's been the mastermind behind all
those 11 players that were playing at the World Juniors who were drafted by
the Leafs?

Acquired from Florida, summer 2001 (for a draft pick I believe), now sitting
on the bench for the nucks

> Lukas Mensator (19?)
Supposed to be a key to the 67s' success

His game has apparently picked up considerably, earlier this year he was
down around -20 for the moose.

> Tomas Mojzis (20) - traded ? to Toronto

A key player for Seattle, runs the PP very well (Brad Leeb went the other
way)

> Mikko Jokela (23) - traded Kariya to NJ

Don't really know anything about him, other than what we saw vs Detroit -
good shot, good skating (it looked like Klatt skates were giving him trouble
not his stride)

> Kiril Koltsov (20)
Supposed to be some sort of offensive master, but in junior, what does that
really mean?

> Forward

I think we know something about this guy...

> R.J. Umberger (20?)
Big physical, american centre

> Nathan Smith (21)
An enigma, apparently shocked everyone with his offensive touch his last
year with Swift Current, but looks to be really struggling to adapt to the
pro game

> Brandon Reid (22)
Exactly as we saw vs Habs, a quick little guy with an offensive touch,
whether this can translate into Ronning style ability is the question (it
certainly looked like he could handle the big boys, unlike little Stevie)

Koltsov is actually playing in Russia, and was very impressive in the
WJHC this year.

Has been awesome for Ohio State, and has a good chance to win the
Hobey Baker award this year.

I have no doubts about Brandon Reid's ability to adapt to the pro
game... he has the skill, the speed, and isn't afraid of the hitting.
I think he's going to be very very good, if given the chance.
