It does make you wonder why the team chemistry seems so poor.
Why don't you go ask him about it, Jebrone?

Well I heard the party story a long time ago from someone who isn't
known to be a bs'er--he thought it was true. I could never really bring
myself around to believe it tho.
Personally I think Messier is a switch hitter from some of the things
I've heard.
And unlike the standard pc disclaimer, I do find it repulsive.

I heard the same story from a source who has always been accurate in the
past (Brown w/ McLean's wife, Bure and Rusty C and nose candy for example).
It would explain a lot, wouldn't it?

Irony.. Whatever do you mean?

Given that it turned out that the story of McLean's wife and Brown
turned out to be garbage, it certainly does explain a lot. What it
explains, however, is that urban myths and malicious gossip do very
little to help the reputations of those who spread them.

How does one know the story was garbage? Do you really think the
parties involved are going to say, "yeah, it happened". I didn't really
think it was coincidental that Carolina traded Jeff Brown the same day
they picked up McLean and Gelinas from the Canucks. Also, that McLean's
goaltending suffered after the incident supposedly happened. Psychology
plays a big role in athletic performance as I am sure you are abundantly
aware... confidence ,etc... Maybe all of this was coincidental, but it
adds more credence to the rumour. A friend and I met friends of Trevor
Linden's wife at a bar in Kelowna and we asked about it and they said it
was very possible. But frankly, who cares? It really is their problem
to deal with. But it has to effect team chemistry and cause problems
among the players.

Where did you get the idea that the Brown / Mrs. Mac story was garbage ?
If anything it was reinforced when Brown was immediately shipped to
Toronto when Carolina acquired McLean. As far as I know the story is
accurate and still stands. Not every story is an urban myth.
Jim
Other than McLean telling the papers after he was traded that the story
wasn't true(and denial is human and understandable) there is no other basis
to say the story isn't true.
It fits for several reasons. As in the post from MS, it is interesting how
Brown was shuffled out of Carolina so quickly. But, more notably was that
the Canucks only managed Dowd and Kucera for him. Obviously, every GM in the
league knew about it and didn't want him in their dressing rooms.
The story was true. The story about Bure and his cocaine usage is true.
Unfortunately, the story about Messier putting the moves on him appears to
be true as well.

It turns out that Lesley McLean wasn't even living in Vancouver during
the time that she was supposed to be carrying on with Jeff Brown. She
was back in Toronto, as she and Kirk had already started living apart
more than they were living together.
The story got started because Brown is apparently an adept
stickhandler in more than one part of his life, and word was that
McLean's marriage was on the rocks. Gossipy minds put two and two
together, and concocted a rumour that was totally false. Yet it still
exists as fact on the internet.
Brown got shipped out of town because he was a clubhouse lawyer and
was fairly unpopular with his teammates. These are the same reasons
why he was run out of Quebec and St. Louis before he got here. By the
time he and McLean passed by each other in Carolina, they were both
veterans on a steep slope downhill in their careers, and had become
tradable spare parts.

Geez Dennis, I wish you wouldn't have added this. There is a world of
difference between healthy skepticism, and denying reality . <G>
I didn't think there was a person left on this planet who still believed in
the LHO lone-nut theory especially someone who was around at the time
of the shooting.
Even the House Select Committee on Assassinations { HSCA } convened in
the '70's had to conclude, admit, and include in their final report, there was
a conspiracy in the JFK assassination.
I suggest it's a bigger leap of faith to believe in the magic bullet, than it
is to believe in a conspiracy. :-)
As to the Brown, Mrs. Mac matter, I will share with you what the reporter[s]
covering the Canucks at the time believe to be the truth. [ I don't want to
say who the reporter[s] is / are ].
Brown was hurt, and remained in town when the Canucks were on the
road. During Canuck road trips, a certain lady had the propensity to visit
Mr. Brown in his West Van hot tub. Well Mr. Brown happened to have a
pregnant girlfriend back from whence he came--St. Louis. One day, Ms.
St. Louis decided it would be a nice surprise to show up unannounced
at same hot tub. Unfortunately St. Louis' surprise visit coincided with
Mr. Brown entertaining another guest, and needless to say, the surprise
visit [ among other things ] fizzled. <G>
Jim
Gee, makes those local hot tub commercials Jeff Brown did seem kind of
ironic huh? (Who else remembers those).
My own personal J. Brown story. I used to go to Canuck training camp
often...And I was at the 94 training camp in Kamloops...me and my
friend were chatting in the local sports bar, when this drop-dead
gorgeous blonde was working as a waitress. Well, being wise,
hung-over, and sporting a black eye from the "fun" the night
before...I knew better than to even try anything except to tip her
well. Anyways, some Canucks and coaches came in after practice
(Christ, can McIlhargy drink!)...and shortly thereafter Brown left
with the nubile young waitress. Someone did comment about his
pregnant (or recently just given-birth) girlfriend back at home.
So, when I heard the McLean story...it didn't shock me.
Those trips were fun...it was actually fairly easy to get close to the
players then, they were (for the most part) pretty cool, if you showed
you knew a little about hockey.
My biggest faux-pas: a couple of years before when training camp was
in Victoria...Gary Valk was sitting out a practice, and was in the
stands...so I chatted with him. He had changed his number from 23 to
18 that year, I asked him why. He said it was his "goal-scoring
number". I burst out laughing...I couldn't help it.
Also was in a hotel bar with Rick Ley, drinking scotch and letting him
tell stories about gooning up Russians when he played for the 1974 WHA
Canadian team that played against the USSR. That guy could drink too.
Cheers,

LOL...geez, I spit out my coffee on this one. Good move. :-)
Good stories...<G>

The same committee later amended the report. They concluded, based
on a review of the evidence using newer technology that there was no evidence
of multiple shooters and no conspiracy.
The book, "Best Evidence" completely destroys most of the conspiracy theories,
including my personal favorite: the one that includes Woody's (Cheers TV show)
father.
Who knows for sure. Norm may have been in the grassy knoll. Perhaps Norm was
painted green and was the grassy knoll.
I really wish there was a giant conspiracy, it would be comforting to know
there is someone in charge, somewhere.

As for what happened with Mac/Brown only they will no. Just like no one but
the parties involved know if Shanny was doing Janney's wife ( Shanny new wife)
before or after Janney and she seperated. But as long as Shanny starts scoring
again and Hoist another Cup. Who Cares.
You done finals and playing for Detroit now? <g>
