Playoffs and the city of Vancouver

I'm studying for finals at the Renfrew St. Library. An old (maybe
60-65 years old) Chinese lady approaches me, and my first assumption
was that she wanted me to translate something from English into
Chinese for her. (I'm sure the other Chinese people reading the NG
get this a fair bit too.) She approaches and says, in English,
"Excuse me?" I look up, and she says, "Sorry, but I forgot my reading
glasses. Can you tell me where it says Vancouver here?", and shows me
today's copy of the Province, pointing to the part of the page that
features the NHL Western Conference standings.
I don't know why I found that so cool. I just know I did. But let
there be no doubt as to the significance of tonight's and Saturday's
games. This one example of an old Chinese immigrant woman asking me
where the Canucks were in the standings was enough to convince me of
one thing: This city wants playoffs. It's gone too long without
playoffs.
To those cynics who say that it doesn't matter whether the Canucks
make it or not, because even if they do they'll be blown out, all I
have to say is: Screw that. We've lost the fireworks. We've lost the
Indy. We've lost the Grizzlies. The economy sucks. We have crooks
and morons running the province. But we have the Canucks, and at
least this week, that's all that matters. We've gone too long without
playoffs. The drought stops _here_.
Go Canucks.

It's a good story Terrence. By way of explanation, I can only say
she was probably used to looking at the bottom of the list. :-(

Nice post Terrence.
One thing though .. let's say the next few days DO go the Canucks' way,
and the team is playoff-bound.
Do you *really* think the city's morale is going to be boosted by the
outcome of a series against Colorado or Detroit (on their home ice)?
Or does your little reverie go as far as conjuring up a win for
Vancouver in such a series? :-)

brings this city together like the Canucks in the playoffs and bad weather
in Tarranna. Saturday should be a great game - a chance to actually go into
the playoffs with some momentum. The Oil spoiled it last year - this year
it's going to be different

To be cold-blooded about it:
- even the minimum two home games in the playoffs means $millions
in added income which, hopefully, will be used to further upgrade
the team.
- we don't have to put up with Leaves' trolls for a while longer.
- Any playoffs is better than no playoffs.
- A lot of hockey fans get to enjoy winning, at least in the regular
season.
- We don't have to read a summer's posts calling for Burke's
firing.
- Sopel 1 1 +2 2 shots
- We get to trade Bertuzzi for a real hockey player :-)
