Avs sign GM Lacroix to long-term contract extension / Oct 11

DENVER (Ticker) - Celine Dion's loss is the Colorado Avalanche's
gain.

Avalanche general manager Pierre Lacroix signed a long-term
contract extension Saturday, halting speculation he would leave
the team at the end of the season to manage the Canadian pop
singer.

Terms were not disclosed.

Avalanche owner Stan Kroenke announced the deal, one day after
Colorado began defense of its unprecedented ninth consecutive
division title with a 5-0 rout of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Two of the key producers in that victory, wingers Paul Kariya
and Teemu Selanne, were signed by Lacroix last July in the free
agency coup of the offseason.

"Every hockey fan in Denver can appreciate what Pierre Lacroix
and his hockey staff have accomplished with this franchise since
it arrived in Denver in 1995," Kroenke said. "We are pleased
to see him continue this relationship and fully realize that his
management skills represent a great asset to our company."

Colorado has won its division every year since Lacroix was hired
in May 1994. The Avalanche captured Stanley Cup championships
in 1996 and 2001. With a lineup that includes four 50-goal
scorers, they are favored to reach the Western Conference finals
for the seventh time in nine years.

"I still have a lot of desire, energy and enthusiasm to give to
this franchise," said Lacroix, 55. "I'm fortunate to work with
the great people I have around me and grateful to live in such a
wonderful community and hockey environment."

Lacroix was in the last year of his contract and there was
speculation he would leave hockey to manage Dion. Both Quebec
natives, he was the best man at Dion's wedding, which was
handled by Lacroix's wife.

That's too bad, Lacroix could have negiotated a contract where Dion would
have to eat and not barf up the food 15 mins later.

Are you taping the game ? If so, and you get a second to check, Ron
is talking to Don about Montreal's chances of making the playoffs, then
they switch to talking about a kid with Toronto, and I could have sworn I
heard Ron say something to the effect, " ..he was OUR leading scorer
in the preseason. "

I'd like to know if I heard right.

Andy, thanks very much, not only for the clip, but the reassurance
my helmet ain't cracked and I heard what I heard.

I think it's a disgrace the anchor of HNIC, a program we all pay for,
has the fucking balls and bias to feel comfortable referring to the
accomplishments of a leave player in the pre-season as ' he was
our leading scorer '.

I'll send off an e-mail, which of course will be ignored, but at least
I won't have taken this bullshit lying down.
