Ok, here we are, debating about how we can make the NHL more offensive and
move away the Jacque Lemaire style of hockey and here was a perfect
opportunity to see more goals scored in a WIDE open All Star game and what
happened? The lowest goal total scored in a long while!

It's official folks... the main reason why we see fewer goals scored in the
NHL are the goalies. Roy was commenting how a goal scored by Guy Lafleur
back then would seem like a great goal, but nowadays it would be a bad goal
let in by goalies with today's pads.

Patrick Roy nailed the donkey's ass when he specifically said that the NHL
should decrease the goalie pad sizes. This is the best alternate way of
making the game more fun again, making economical sense. People can have
great ideas as to how to increase offense, but in the end, it comes to $$$.

I don't know...if you're using the All Star game as an example, I was struck
by how many of the goals were 'ugly' or garbage goals. At least three or
four of them were rebounds around the net or back bounces. Few (relatively
speaking) were scored off the rush. Are we developing players now who seek
out these scoring opportunities? For whatever reason--the goalie equipment
size being one of them--the best way to score goals is to stand at the net
and whack away. DB.

Curious timing on Patricks part. "Hmmmmm it just occurred to me, now that
I'm all retired, that my equipment is too big. :-P

which teams would go?

Of the lower valued teams I only see Pittsburgh and Buffalo being in
trouble.

Although if the NHL buckles under to the NHLPA the bottom third to half of
the league might be gone.

The next year will be a real turning point for the NHL.

If the NHL can get an NFL type of contract things will really be looking up.

The value of the assets of any team are next to nothing.
All the value is in the estimation of what a buyer would
pay, based on expectation of future revenue, including
a subsequent sale.

Doesn't this sound a lot like the dot.com system of
valuing corporations? Future expectations. And
totally without the soundness of, for example, the
expectation of future rental income of a revenue
property. Sport franchise values are purely
mythical. Not convinced? Look at the deep
discount that the Senators were sold for. There
was essentially no value to the franchise itself.

There's essentially no value to most business operations that are based on
entertainment or information, without the talent/brains of the people
running them.

The assets are people, and their percieved market value is based on the
expected return on their talent/intelligence. Pretty much the same for TV,
radio, movies, publishing, etc...

Your right, 'cause guys are going to catch up and pass his records in
the future.

But while it is self serving, he is correct. The NHL never should have
made the pads wider than 10 inches. It was totally unnecessary.

Ditto the Buffalo Sabres. And Golisano may still have overpaid
since the Rigas family pumped $150 Million of Adelphia money
into that franchise. It wouldn't surprise me when Golisano bails,
we discover all sorts of secret guarantees by New York state,
Erie County and the City of Buffalo.
