So, after the last couple of weeks and the loss to San Jose, it's
pretty clear that our new coach / new captain bounce is over.
So what do you think? Is this a playoff team? Is something wrong with
Pettersson? Is benching Kuzmenko a solution? Do we need another piece or
two?
Here are some random thoughts:
We don't have much depth. Losing Soucy and Suter (who I think is much
better than his stats indicate and really ate up minutes 5 on 5) is
hitting us hard. The team is losing a lot without them in the lineup.
I've seen a lot of chatter about signing Ethan Bear, but I don't recall
him being that strong of a defenceman. Hopefully they're working on
something else.
The Canucks have fired more than one good coach in the past few years. I
don't buy the "Tocchet has great systems and Bruce was just an
empty-headed player's coach" line. They've both coached before.
Whatever's happening, it's in part on the players.
The team played a really structured, systematic, and energetic game at
the start of the season. That's been missing of late. In the Seattle
game, the jump was back, but the systematic positioning still doesn't
seem to have returned.
Maybe things will turn around now that the schedule is going to be less
intense. I hope so. As a Canucks fan, all you can do is carry on against
your better judgement!
