I'm not crazy about a McDavid-type person to act as captain of a team. A
captain should be someone older, not necessarily the best player on the
team, but someone who garners respect by not just doing but communicating.
You go back and look at some of the better captains on teams and they
weren't the superstars, but they were the ones who mediated between the
coaching staff and the players, represented the team, were able to deal
with the media in a way that was positive, etc.... Armstrong was as
excellent captain. Keon, not so much. Sundin, mostly by leadership and
example. Wendel Clark, maybe the perfrct type for captain. Matthews is too
young, and while he gives you the impression that he's mature beyond his
years, he's stil 19 years old (as I write this).
You know who would be perfect for the job? Komarov. Uncle Leo. Respected by
everybody, leads by example, speaks several languages (good for european
players), been around the game on both hemispheres, keeps people loose, and
would represent the Leafs better than a young and inexperienced (in a non-
playing capacity) player.
Other who should NOT be captain: Kadri (too wound up), Marner (still too
young).
Other who night be candidates: Polak and Matt Martin. Or even Brian Boyle.
But not Matthews. Maybe in 4-5 years. Not now.
