Always appreciated Couture's frankness. After a bad loss he would tell it straight.

However, here it is hard to tell if he is just saying nice, cookie-cutter things to the media, or if he really believes this. I don't know how you think a turn-around is near, or still call this a retooling.

Mercifully the rebuild is clearly underway. Whether or not Couture and Hertl are committed to the team and want to stay, they need to be continually shopped.

My guess is both would rather play on playoff teams if given the opportunity

The more important point is that neither fits into a realistic rebuild timeline for the Sharks, so they need to be moved for as many assets as they can garner. The sooner, the better.

Just as an example, compare what the Sharks gave away for Karlsson, as compared to what they were offered, even after his historic season. Couture and Hertl will bring even less. I'm really not sure that many realize how close the Sharks are to looking like the early stages of an expansion team (and I don't mean one with the gifts offered Las Vegas). DW did catastrophic damage to this franchise, and the situation was amplified by an owner, who also didn't want to face reality and supported pretending they were still Cup contenders.

It's going to be a long, painful haul to get back to top competitive form, if they can do it at all.

I agree about looking like an expansion team, but that's true of any rebuilding team. Rebuilding teams have to get bad contracts off the books, clear cap space, restock prospects through the draft and trades, and temporarily fill holes with serviceable veterans, and bank on them having rebound seasons.

Couture and Hertl might not haul in significant assets, but you never know. Wacky things happen around the TDL, especially for desperate GMs. Keep thinking about the Toronto situation with Marner, Mathews, and Nylander. Something will happen there and the Sharks could be in the mix. Imagine Couture for Nylander trade. It could happen. Not saying it will, but there's potential that Toronto can't afford the three forwards and settle for having a Couture at $8M.

to be specific about the pains we will see.
- It's clear Grier does not like DW's prospects and will get rid of them. They're too small and may be unable to win over roster spots from the retooled veteran corp. The unknown is how much Grier will get in return
- I predict this current roster will win more games than last season. Not good in terms of chances for 1st overall.
- until mukhamadulin makes the roster, there's no real offensive threat from the blueline.
- goaltending is still a question mark. Lots of ifs about Blackwood and the entire crop

I dont think it's a long term rebuild, maybe 3 years. Only time will tell.

Agree with much. 3 years feels pretty long. They will at least have most big contracts off the books by then. But maybe in like 4 or 5 they'll hopefully see some high draft picks come together.

Speaking of Grier type players, wonder what the market on Eklund is. It's apparent why he fell in teh draft now. He has not been impressive other than a couple games when he very first played in the NHL

Eklund should be given the opportunity to play this season. Playing consistently on a line with Hertl or Couture might take his game to the next level. If not, he might end up being a good mid-tier talent, which is not so bad.

I still can't ee where adequate high-end talent will come from. That's why it's critical to nurture farm systems with both quality and quantity draft picks over years, so there's a pool of genuine talent to migrate upwards. DW wrecked that totally, and for many years. You can't fix that in a couple of years, even if you make a couple good trades and picks. It's going to take longer, and that's even if all goes perfectly.

Quick question for you all. Who's the moderator/owner of this group? New Conversation button is no longer available and is likely a group setting issue.

I have no idea. That is strange!

There is no moderator.

Ditch Google Groups and get yourself a real newsreader
application and a connection to a newsserver feed.

There are several free newservers (I use eternal-september;
it has very good filters to rid the newsgroups of spam
floods) and several others for a small annual fee.

Feel the Teal...just do it in the real Usenet, not in
the bastardized version that is Google Groups.

Google ever existed
