HOW ABOUT GAINEY!!! What an oversight. His exclusion invalidates the whole
list, IMO. In 1972, a pole was taken among Russian players, and they agreed
that he was the greatest hockey player that they'd ever seen!

My two cents:

1) Orr - best hockey player of all time, period. Nobody even close IMHO.
Came down from another league. Left fans and opponents in awe of his
abilities. (Once I saw him skate around and kill 1:40 seconds of a
two-minute penalty by himself without ever letting the other team even touch
the puck.)

2) Plante - Best goalie. Totally understood when to come out and when to
stay in the net. Knocked forwards twice his size on their butts if they
screened him. Incredibly fast hands. Great skater, too.

3) Gretzky - probably best overall forward over career and with great
instincts, vision and touch. (Although, Maurice Richard was awesome. You
just have to imagine what the NHL was like, then, with six --count 'em,
six-- teams. The best of the best! And this guy scores 50 goals in 50
games, not 82 games!)

Which is really impressive - considering the Gainey wasn't drafted
until 1974...I didn't know they were scouting Peterborough back then.
:)

Anyway, I think the poll was taken in 1980 or so. And he should have
been in the top 50. mid-40's I'd say

Dirk Graham one of the top 50 ever? Give me a break! He wouldn't be in
the top 300! And Hasek's not quite there yet, either...maybe the top
200. We're talking years of hockey here, not the last 10 or 2-3!!
Other than that, most of the list looks good...alth not necessarily in
the order stated IMHO.

There is just no arguing this.......If the younger people had seen him
play they would most likely agree. He dominated in ever aspect of the
game. Like you said......he would take the puck and kill a penalty by
himself. He was once +128. He was so good...it wasnt fair.

I think the difference when arguing who is the greatest, it just depends
how
you look at the criteria. People look at Gretzky and see the stats and
the records, thus they see his accomplishments, whereas Orr supporters
tend to look at the actual on ice performance and god given talent.

Well, I have to totally disagree with you. Well, not totally. Orr is #2,
but as someone who saw both Orr and Gretzky play (seeing Gretzky playing live
many times at the Coliseum), I could rave about Gretzky's God given talents
just as much as Orr's. Gretzky was not a 1 dimensional scoring machine (tho'
he has become one after 18 years in the league - age slows one down you know,
as Orr would have found out if his limbs hadn't failed him), but a far more
complete player than many think. He may not have been a dominating physical
presence (hitting), but in every other way, he was the best. He back-checked,
could dominate while penalty killing (lagging the puck for 45-60 seconds at a
time), had great vision, and a lot better shot than people give him credit
for (who else scored 92 goals in a season). People look at Gretzky's stats
because they are so overwhelming (he was often 30 to 35% better than the next
best offensive player, that type of stat is unmatched in *any* professional
sport).

Just my opinion, tho' - and everyone has a different one (more or less).

I need someone's help. A while back, I saw a web page that had stats
from EVERY Player, on EVERY team, in EVERY league, in the entire
history of hockey. If anyone has a clue what I am speaking of, please
write back!! Thank you.

I think this may help. This is the web page for the Syracuse Crunch
Player Stats. You can work backwards from there!
