Penguins Notebook: Ottawa writer urges Senators to injure Penguins stars

The Penguins dismissed calls from a newspaper writer from Ottawa to
intentionally injure their first-round playoff opponents, star center
Sidney Crosby in particular.

Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun wrote yesterday that forwards Crosby, Evgeni
Malkin, Marian Hossa and Petr Sykora and defenseman Sergei Gonchar "have
to be targeted."

Of Crosby, who missed 28 games the second half of the season because of a
high ankle sprain, Brennan wrote, "Crosby's got a bad RIGHT ankle? How
will it stand up to a two-hander? The Senators have to find out." He urged
an Ottawa player to "emerge as a modern-day Bobby Clarke" and recalled the
1972 Summit Series, when Clarke slashed the ankle of Valeri Kharlamov,
sidelining the Russian star.

"They can write whatever they want, but, if somebody was to do that to the
best player in the world, they'll be suspended the rest of the playoffs,"
Penguins winger and enforcer Georges Laraque said. "That writer is just
stupid. I've never heard anything so stupid."

Crosby, asked about the article, said without missing a beat, "It's my
left."

He didn't seem worried.

"It wouldn't be the first time something like that happened," Crosby said.
"Teams obviously read injury reports. If a guy's got a bad shoulder, I'm
sure you're not going to ease up and not hit him. That's typical. Whether
or not they deliberately do it, who knows? But that's why refs are out
there, to police the game and make sure that stuff doesn't happen."

One idiot reporter makes the Senators a bunch of cowards?

Sens fans ignore Don Brennan also.

Please look back to the first round last year when Colby Armstrong
took Patrick Eaves out of the playoffs with a thundering hit that
may have been within the rules, but was not 100% clean. Was it "fair"?

That's playoff hockey. Look for more of the same in each and every
series.

That is just not cool... As much as I'd like to see the Pens go down,
I'd rather they do it healthy. As much as I'd like to see Crosby
played rough, I'd like ot see it done cleanly. I doubt the Sens will
take much heart in that article, and will likely just go out and try
there best. As for the writer, I say let HIM play against the Pens,
that would be fun to watch.

I should've phrased that different, I meant the press people. I HIGHLY
doubt any of players will use a "two-hander" towards Sid's ankle. But I do
expect them to hit him hard every "legal" chance they get.

LOL, I hear ya with the Prilosec! We fans tend to be a thousand times
more nervous than the players! :-/

I don't take anything posted in here personally, it's all in good fun and
a small way to make us feel like a part of the game. All I really hope
(for both teams) is, no injuries or bad calls by the refs. Then it's flat
out, let the best team win!

Good luck vs Washington and "if" we meet next round... FLYERS SUCK! ;)

Haa haa haa! You said no bad calls by the refs!!!! In all honesty,
I'm just glad the Flyers made the post season, that is a tremendous
turnaround for a team to go from 30th to 11th. Round 2 will just be
gravy. The Flyers still need a good NHL level coach and a elite
goaltender. The Penguins need for their captain to mature a little
more, and for their netminder to prove himself in the playoffs. Oh,
the Captain could stop whining some, too! >:-)

Protonix for me. Glad my insurance pays for most of it. That stuff is
expensive but it works better than the others.
