i'd really like to go, but have to settle for watching at home
tonight. i'd have to drive anyway, at least to a station in new
jersey, as i live in the lehigh valley, and there's no train service
from here anymore, either to philly or to newark/new york.
we're not lending you jacking fucking squat. i hope the flyers piss
all over your team and start a reverse trend of winning just about
every game at the rock. that said, despire the devils terrible start,
i will not be shocked at all if they win tonight. not one bit.
i do wonder how many flyers fans will travel there tonight for the
first game in the new arena. always a big presence in the upstairs
corner sections at the old dump. i have a feeling there won't be as
many.

C'mon be a good sport. Used to be we had interchangible forwards -
now we have indistinguishable dmen. We could use a little help from
our friends. :-)

Well, if somehow we get the Devils squad that gave lickins to Tampa
Bay and Toronto, maybe there's an outside possibility. Of course, as
was pointed out here earlier, in terms of talent, my squads fifth in
the Atlantic division. Not sure if Sutter has 'em exerbiking a
gazillion hours whether that will get them to fourth.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a good Flyer fan showing. First
night in a new building that you can literally hop on at 30th Street
Station and hop off two blocks from the game. Plus we still have
some Newarkphobes up here that won't go so seats shouldn't be a
problem.
nope. i'm going to sit up here and enjoy the downward view for as long
as possible. can you blame me?

i read somehwere, maybe your group, yesterday about a rumor that
sutter ran a curfew check on brodeur recently. hopefully that's not
true, but if it is, your team's problems run deep.

you'd think because of the easy access from the train there would be a
big group. i doubt any city residents have a real problem with heading
to newark for a game. the south jersey or maybe even philly 'burb
dwellers might. after all, melrose put the word out about how
dangerous it is and all.
on a side note, has brodeur ever not started a game against the flyers
in his career, or at least since he bacame the bona fide starter in
94? just wondering. i'm sure he'll play tonight, but i can't ever
remember a game where he didn't play against them.
=j
That's from Ken in the Maple Leafs ng. On the one hand it wouldn't
surprise me, on the other hand he got it from the Toronto press, which
has a bit of a checkered past when it comes to inventing/getting a
story.

But, has that stopped a Philly crowd? A Nashville crowd maybe, but a
Flyer crowd?

Well, in the semi-recent past it would be Clemmenson or Dunham and I
can't remember either of them ever starting a game against the Orange
& Black. Maybe Terreri. Gosh, that takes me back to the Marty v.
Hextall days.

I can't. I was in the building back for Game 7 of the 2000 ECF
playoffs. Kinda like when the ex jilts you for Mr. Rich & Handsome.
You pray for the two of them to get sucked into a crank-induced spiral
downward into squalor.
i figured you wouldn't. i was in the building for game 5 of the '95
ecf's. last game i saw the flyers play at the spectrum. it still
bothers me. sure the series wasn't technically over after that, but
everyone knew it was because of the nature of the end of that game. i
was watching at home in '00, and that game still bothers me...a hell
of a lot more...than the other. it cemented my utter hatred of that
organization for eternity, regardless of who wears the uniform. it
wasn't just the loss of that game, i knew it was the end for lindros.
he's to blame for that as well, because he should not have come back
to that series. the flyers win it and probably the cup if he doesn't.
but it's a shame that his career has ended the way it has. it's why i
enjoyed stevens being knocked out of the game with a puck to his head.
i am enjoying elias being completely useless. i am loving marty look
like a tired hack (even though i have tremendous respect him for all
he's accomplished). it's the beginning of the end of their dominance.
they will NEVER have another goalie like marty. NEVER. i want them to
fail miserably. words cannot adequately express that sentiment. not
even close.

Not going tonight, but hopefully sometime this year. Out of curiosity, I
checked on their website. As of 1:30 this afternoon you could buy 8
seats in the same row in the lower level.
As for your other request...no.

as i said, even though the game's not over...it's just typical.
zubrus, no goals on the year. of course he scores against the flyers
for his first. blah, blah, blah.
we'll see what happens the remaining 40.

And you know for all the vitriol, when I've been to the FU/Wachovia
Center, I've had a great time with the fans. Undoubtedly the most
knowledgable in the game - lots of fun up thar in the $23 behind-the-
goalie rafter seats (a Viceroy favorite - though you need
binoculars). But go figure, on my side of the Delaware we can barely
scratch up a fan base - half of whom would seemingly rather be in
Paramus shopping, and yet in this patch of obscure swamp and now
Carjack City, somehow we get fielded a hockey club that over the last
decade had others circling the date. Credit to Lou.
But, you're right. That ride can only go on so long.
Btw, lots of Flyers fans at The Rock last night - so that Penn Station
connection may prove a boon in terms of getting to the new arena for
those near the Northeast Corridor. And everything was spirited though
disappointingly no fights in the stands - one of the Meadowlands
Flyers-Devils traditions that's yet to take root in the new digs. A
few heated back-n-forth ribbings in the 231-233 sections though so
there's hope. :-) And credit to the six topless dudes for painting
themselves orange and spelling out F-L-Y-E-R-S on their collective
chests a la Seinfeld. Mr. Y though disappeared early in the game -
drank too much maybe? - so we had to make do the FLERS.
i think the stereotype of the horrible philly fan is overstated. i've
seen less than a handful of actual physical altercations in over 25
years of watching the flyers. the most have happened at the
meadowlands, but i've generally had a good time with the devils fans
at the swamp. mostly good natured ribbing. on occassion it became
heated and it was entirely due to my being provoked by devils fans. i
never walk into another barn looking for or start trouble. i just keep
to myself and watch the game, and that goes for the WAC too.
and i agree with your lou comment. somehow he's been able to craft
great teams with pretty decent retain percentage of his best players.
coaches on the other hand...different story.
> But, you're right. That ride can only go on so long.
yep. but as i said, the valley can quickly return to a peak, too. i do
not expect the devils to ever become a cellar dwellar for more than a
year or two. and they may never be that low at all.

good to know a lot of flyers fans made it up there, but i was really
disappointed with the turnout overall. just banks of empty seats
behind the net and in the corners...i know the prices are really high,
but jeez, it's just depressing to see. it's been like that every game
except the opener.

No argument here. I personally thought when fans saw and heard about
the building - the old Field of Dreams built-it-and-they-would-come -
it would fill up many nights. But so many of the seats hug a three
digit price, they've priced out a lot of Joe Fans...and the corporates
haven't stepped up - half the suites appear to be unsold and once you
get passed the tony Club seats, stuff in that $60-100 range has little
interest. Our own Mike Ventolo pointed that out when the prices
appeared. A "you have to be joking". There's some back door
discounting going on in group sales now but they will have to figure
out more direct ways to move the seats. Maybe a $ 99 family pack or
Twofer offers on the side of coke cans.
So in short it's a work in progress. The more people that go and have
a good time there, the more momentum will build.
