OT: Electric wire ethernet networks

wireless signal from the router barely makes it to my mom's computer (and
when it snows and stuff, forget it). Plus I'm getting them a wireless
blu-ray to stream Netflix, and I've read some bad things about them if you
don't have an awesome signal.
Has anyone messed around with making an ethernet network using a house's
copper wiring through the sockets? Does it really work? I thought it might
be a way to replace wireless, and hook up the blu-ray to an ethernet
connection.

my recoomendation is but an extrememly LONG Cat5 or Cat6 cable and go
ethernet
i had a 200 foot one once
worked great

The problem with extending cat wire is going through walls and cielings and
everything, especially in the freezing New England countryside with mice,
ants, etc.

Can't you just get a better wireless router/getaway? You could also run a
wire to relocate the wireless to a better location. If you run an ethernet
link on copper even if they work, there's no way you are going to get the
same bandwidth over 2 wires that you would get over a bonifide ethernet.
Upgrade the wireless.

I have some Powerline adapters (run through the copper wire) that work
fine. One run is to my mother-in-law's computer in the basement and
the other goes to my Wii (also in the basement). The signal isn't
strong down there and it's just easier to run this. And it works, too.
Not quite the 20 Mbps I get upstairs, but certainly fast enough.
Powerline adapters aren't cheap, though. If I had to do it again, I'd
run a second router and use it to catch and redirect the wireless
signal (like I've done in a back room in the house).

I agree with Rick. I have the same problem (old house with thick
floors and walls, poor range) with the Verizon router's wireless
signal, so I plugged a better wireless unit into it, set up a 'new'
network, and added a range extender on the second floor. Problem
solved. I can even sit in my back yard and get a pretty good signal.

which blu-ray did you get? i went with the lg bd370. should arrive any
day now. it's near enough my router that i'm not too worried about
signal, but we'll see.

Ugh, I just deal with wired lines. :D Surewest left 900 feet of Cat 5
at my house, and I've just been running lines to where I need
them... :D

All-a dem fancy-trousered ejumacations are finally paying off for you
guys! I'm sticking with SDTV. Know why? If you don't get too much
exposure to the better stuff, you can do without with no problem. Same
probably goes with beer. Anyway, I made the mistake of getting a
kick-ass audio system awhile ago and am always expanding on it,
because I can *never* have the old school sound that passed as sound.
I can deal with a "decent" picture, without HD (i.e. my own
reflection in the tears that come out of those on screen,) but my
sound must be perfect in every way. It's only a matter of time before
HD, BR, all of that 1080 stuff, hits my home, but I sure as shit can't
quite afford to go down that path yet, and if I could it would
probably go toward some of that Imperial Stoot you guys were talking
about the other day.

plus, if you drunk enough, at some point it doesn't matter if you've got
HD or SD. it's all the same blur.

I'm a little nervous. I'm waiting for the Insignia or whatever that Best
Buy generic brand is. They have one for $180 that they had on sale on Black
Friday (I think) for $119, so I thought I'd give that a whirl.
For myself, I haven't bought one yet, because I'm spending my whole budget
on Time Warner HD-DVR cable. If someday I give it up, then I'll subscribe
to Netflix and get a Blu-Ray player.
