Normally things don't get this far unless there is substantial reason for
the subpeona. Say goodby to your coaching career Rick. I always liked
Tocchet but assuming these charges have merit - and they probably do - what
a dumbass.

One of my all-time favorite players, but now all that stands a good
chance of being permanently diminished. Damn shame. I could've seen him
coaching in Philly someday.

And wow, Gretzky's wife is implicated as well. As is Roenick (in the
original link).

from:

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/02/07/sports/s134606S20.DTL

Wayne Gretzky's wife and about a half-dozen NHL players placed bets —
but not on hockey — with a nationwide sports gambling ring financed by
Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet, authorities said Tuesday.

Gretzky, hockey's greatest player, is in his first season coaching the
Coyotes and is a part-owner of the team.

Actress-wife Janet Jones was among those implicated, two law enforcement
officials told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity
because no bettors have been publicly identified.

More proof the NHL is a joke:

"We understand that Mr. Tocchet's conduct in no way involved betting on
hockey," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. "And, while betting on
football or other sports may be the pervasive issue, it in no way
justifies poor judgment or otherwise alleged inappropriate conduct."

That's the best they could do?

Rick Tocchet should be suspended indefinitely. And if he's found guilty
he should be banned from the NHL for life.

What did he do that is so bad?

If he's guilty of it, he financed an illegal gambling operation that had
mafia connections.

Mafia connections, yeah that would be bad.
Illegal gambling operation, doesn't bother me so much. Basically that's just
the government not getting their cut.
Don't get me wrong, if guilty he should serve whatever the penalty is.
But a ban from the NHL for life? I don't see the need.
Unless he had bet on games he was involved in, then yeah I would agree with
you.

The thing is, as a coah, player or exec in the NHL he shouldn't be
involved in an organized sports betting operation. It's just bad, even
if Janet Jones or Roenick didn't bet on hockey there's nothing to say
that there wasn't hockey betting going on. The potential for impropriety
is just too great.

If it's true, he should be out of the league. And even if there was
nothing at all to do with hockey but yes to mafia connections? It's a
gotsta go situation. No matter what, it's gotsta go.

And if the Gretzkys are involved, the wife of a team owner/coach who
you know was aware of what she was doing, then I don't even know what
to say. Their arrogance and/or stupidity knows no bounds. Even if
there was no betting on hockey going on, the possiblity of hockey
games being thrown for the advantage of others is just too strong.

I think gambling should be legal. And if they could figure out how to tax it
outside of Vegas, it would be.

I hope he beats it.

Wait, are you SURE it was Janet Jones involved? Because the New York
Times today said it was a "movie celebrity."

It won't be the gambling that's the problem: it's the tax evasion and
money laundering that someone will go to jail over.

The specific connection, per the article in the Phila. Daily News today,
is that they paid "tribute" money to various mobsters -- protection
money to keep the mafia off their backs.

Illegal gambling isn't the problem. Running the show is the problem.

Hello, Bruce McNall.

Gee, what a coincidence! TGO is" best friends" with them both.

Is Wayneo a boozer or does he have naturally red eyes? Saw him on ESPN the
night the story broke and he looked like he'd just crawled out of a bottle.

I'd be drinking too, but then again I wouldn't let my spouse take the

Damn, this could be bigger than Pete Rose!
