Does DirectTV black out philly games that are on other regional networks?
For example, if the Phillies are playing the Dodgers, and FOX West is
showing the game, can we view it in Philly?

I know that CSN is blacked out locally no matter what package you buy.
Comcast should not be allowed to do that, because it prevents competition.
DirectTV provides 1 regional sports channel, and we get MSG and Fox NY, not
Comcast. Comcast won't allow their signal on DirectTv in this market whether
you pay for it or not. I feel that is completely unfair and unethical.

Would anybody be interested in petitioning the FCC with me? Comcast bought
my cable company, raised my rate from $43 to $72, and now won't allow me any
other options if I ever want to see the Phillies, Flyers, or Sixers again.
This is total bullshit. This can not be legal. If this is challenged, I feel
the people can prevail. I am deadly serious about bringing a class action
suit here if one doesn't already exist.

I'm pretty sure this went to court a year or two ago. DTV lost because the
arguement was the comcast never broadcasts over the air. The signal never
leaves thier network.

Of course there are non-legal way around this....

With the Flyers, it's blacked out, regardless. The only exception are games
that are exclusively on ESPN or ESPN2.

Comcast is in competition against satellite companies, so having Comcast's
flagship sports network only on the Comcast service may influence customers
to lean toward cable over dish, or maybe scrapping an existing dish
completely.

I'm pretty sure it's been done, my friend. I remember when we first ordered
NHL Center Ice 3 years ago, the first fall we had the dish, expecting to get
Flyers games. If I recall, this was also the same summer that Sportschannel
Philadelphia became Comcast Sportsnet. Much to the delight of having every
game played in the league every night, there came the shock of not being
able to watch the very team we bought it for. Good thing I'm a diehard
hockey fan, I'll watch anything that involves a puck.

you are partially correct in the way you asked the question

Yes Fox Sports west IS BLACKED OUT in philly if the Phillies are playing the
Dodgers

But its not Direct TV that does the Blocking................Comcast sportsnet
Blocks it..............therefore if your zip code in Lancaster Pa is a zipcode
that gets blocked, there might be a house in Lititz which might be YOUR NEXT
DOOR NEIGHBOR(figuring you both live on the city line) HIS HOUSE,DIFFERENT
ZIP........he gets to watch the game.

then next week Comcast buys up the local cable company in Lititz and Viola
!........................comcast blocks his Fox Sports West too.

My Suggestion.................
1.buy your satalite dish
2.get direct tv
3.get locals on directv
4.buy seasontickets to the flyers

Local stations like Fox west and MSG buy local broadcast rights to the games.
This means they can only show them in their area. You can't watch the Phillies on
Fox West because Fox West only owns the right to broadcast the game in the Fox
West area. NHL ticket and its equivolents in other sports buy the right to
broadcast the games every where but that stations area. However if you are
unfortunate enough to live in the Comcast Philly area you won't be able to watch
any of the games if they are on comcast as well. I.e if the Flyers play LA it
would be on Fox West and Comcast Philly. Everyone everywhere except in
philly(with the NHL ticket) can watch the game on Fox West, but since comcast
Philly owns the broadcast rights in the philly area you're screwed. All stations
that broadcast there signal through the air in any way are required by law to
allow the station to be carried on satellite(directv and dish) which is why you
get virtually every FOX Sports affiliate plus others. Comcast philly is an
exception because all of its broadcast are land based and never enter the air, and
therefore are not required to let satellites carry the station. So, as you can
see, Philly fans are uniquely screwed. Figures.

If Comcast as a whole is in competition with DirecTV and doesn't allow
it's signal on satellite, how does that explain Comcast SportsNet
Baltimore/Washington D.C. being available on DirecTV?

Why do they allow Washington D.C.' s version of Comcast SportsNet over
satellite but not Philly's CSN? What's the deal with that??

Last time I checked, Comcast ran the whole show and both were owned by
the same person....can somebody explain THAT one?

Curious to know what's up with that....

Because before Comcast DC was Comcast DC, it was Home Team Sports which WAS
already on DirecTV. IF Comcast would have pulled the same shit they have in
Philly, they would have been overrun with Caps and more importantly Oriole
fans bitching and moaning. In the end, the "new" Comcast DC was already on
DirecTV, only the name had changed. I would also think that in the buyout
negotiations the HTS people made assurances that their customers would not
be screwed once Comcast bought it. And I would also guess that DirecTV had
a contract with HTS that had to be honored.

From what I understand they are required to allow satellites to carry
Comcast DC because it broadcasts through the air and can't claim the same
technicality as the all land based Comcast Philly. Not sure though.

Comcast is not going to let CSN go out over the sats. That's their only
competition. They own the network, they can do whatever the fk they want
with it.

<snip>

Silly me mistook Comcast Sports NetNet (Mid-Atlantic) for Comcast Sports
NetNet (Philly). Friggin' CSN Philly still doesn't broadcast on satellite.
Not much I can do about that. They can't be forced.

I already complained to the FCC.

call Phillies broadcast at Vet and complain--call FCC and complain
call Comcast (1-800-222-1813) and complain--probably won't do any good
but complain anyway

Phillies: 215-463-6000
FCC: 1-888-225-5322
Also call the Local Franchising Authority in PA

1992 Cable Act is supposed to guarantee equal access to TV channels.
Hello--Not happening here!!!! Because Comcrap REFUSES to allow
satellite services to broadcast the Phils. (Flyers and Sixers too)

DirecTV sued Comcast and lost. They are in their 3rd round of appeals now,
and it looks dim. As unfair as it is, Comcast doesn't have to comply.

What is worse now is CN8. They are pushing more Phillies games there, and
they can't be viewed no matter what you do if you don't subscribe to Comcast
cable.

It's CN8 or no telecast. With the Flyers and 76ers still playing, those
games have to be either on CSN or UPN-57. If both teams play the same night,
there's no room for the Phils.

Yeah. I'd have abandoned Comcast a year ago and gone with the dish, however
I ain't willing to give up local sports viewing no matter how shitty comcast
treats its customers.
