Here's to the New York Rangers -- let's hope they have a miserable
year and miss the playoffs. Again!
Sweet justice for all the franchises who can't match New York's
financial firepower.
And delicious revenge for fans who've lost a favourite player to the
bright lights and big paycheques of the real centre of the universe.
Sorry, Toronto, but you're the 65% version.
While many NHL GMs were exercising some self restraint this off-
season, Neil Smith and his bosses with the bottomless pockets doled out
big contracts left and right.
Money was no object and obviously there was no thought given to the
teams who simply can't afford to match such largesse and are struggling
to survive.
Boston: Sorry, Dmitri Khristich, you ain't worth that much, so motor
back to Moscow and get a real job.
New York: Yes, Mr. Lefebvre, how much dough would you like to play
here? Sure that's enough?
Ottawa: Sorry, Alexei Yashin, we have a deal, so take a hikeski.
New York: Oh, Theoren Fleury, here's the vault. Help yourself, there's
plenty more where that came from.
And you, too, Val Kamensky, Tim Taylor, Stephane Quintal, Kirk McLean,
help yourselves ...
Yes, if the NHL itself is a team, the Rangers are that bonehead who
won't pass to an open teammate and takes selfish penalties without
apology. You just gotta hate 'em. And that $58.2-million US payroll.
While most Canadian franchises are cap in hand, looking for help to
stay alive, the fat cats of the NHL freely spend their way to a good
case for a salary cap.
Of course, money can't buy you love, and can't necessarily buy you a
Cup, either. Chemistry is priceless.
Just ask the Detroit Red Wings, who last spring opened the vault for
Uwe Krupp, Wendel Clark, Chris Chelios and Bill Ranford in an attempt
to win a third straight Stanley Cup.
They didn't and it looked good on them. Money briefly bought them a
good time, but it wasn't everlasting.
Sure, the Wings and Rangers have every right to spend as much as they
want, but at what price?
Free agency and unlimited payrolls ruined major-league baseball for
the majority of fans. (Why do you think so many people hate the New
York Yankees?)
So you can't help but laugh at the L.A. Dodgers as their mediocre
players laugh all the way to the bank .
The have-nots build a winning team the hard way -- if they're good,
and lucky -- and it's broken up by the lure of the big dollar.
The fans fall in love with a player, and he leaves for greener
pastures. There are the elite teams, and then there are the rest of the
pack. Such as Calgary.
What are we, chopped liver? A farm team?
It's OK rich boys, us hicks will develop the talent and you can lure
them to the big city when they're stars.
Jarome Iginla wants a raise, but what has he really done to deserve
one? Sure enough, in five years, when he may have actually developed
into a star, he'll be off to the big city.
That's wrong. A league is only as strong as its weakest member, not
its strongest.
And a salary cap is the only way every team can have the same chance
to put equal talent on the ice.
You can talk about government help for Canadian teams, the weak
dollar, and revenue sharing as ways of achieving balance in the NHL.
And they all help.
But take the large green out of the equation and every team all of a
sudden has the same opportunity to sign the superstars.
And teams like the New York Rangers won't be stealing players, and
hearts, across North America.
Here's hoping there's much misery on Manhattan.
And joy in Mudville ... Calgary, Edmonton, etc ...

Not only is he a whiner, but he's a moron, too.

Everyone hates the Yankees because they spend all that $$$ on free
agents? I don't think so. Um, how about those 35 pennants and 24 World
Series titles? Nah, that couldn't be the source of all the animosity.

I think you all have nothing to say, because you can't. Rangers =
slefish players with greedy owners.

I too hope you fail to make the playoffs.

You're right. I knew the greedy owners were paying big bucks to Finnish and
Swedish players, but I can't believe they're giving money to slefish
players, too. What's this world coming to? I think we should nuke Slefland.
It's a shitty country that hasn't done anything to help the world. Don't you
agree?

Hi--Canucks fan and frequent lurker in this, the most
entertaining of hockey newsgroups.

I'm not in the habit of coming to the defence of the
Rangers, but let's consider the Canucks for a moment--
a poor Canadian franchise.

The season before last, their top three contracts
were Bure, Messier and Mogilny. I doubt that the
top three Rangers at the time were making more than
those three. In fact, Smith lost Messier to the
big spending Canadian team, for which he was roasted
in some quarters. Just a few years ago, Vancouver
was about #4 in salaries--and getting roasted by
people like Glen Sather for spending so lavishly.

Currently, fiscal responsibility in Vancouver includes
paying pylons like Murray Baron 2 million U.S. per
year. Now that our Billionaire (american) owner has
sold our basketball team to Walmart, he hopefully won't
sweat about the hockey bucks he's throwing away.

(and we won't even go into the money they wasted paying
a number of coaches--especially Keenan--all at the
same time because they kept firing them...)

Hey, I live about 150km away from Calgary...I even get their radio stations
and TV broadcasts. That really hurt, Starr. And, for what it's worth, the
Calgary Sun won the award for "Best Canadian Daily Tabloid" from the
Canadian Dairy Products Association. Lets see you say that about your
fancy-pants "New York Times"...

Sadly, cheese is no longer under their jurisdiction...there was an internal
feud leading to a split (reminiscent of the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks back
in the day)...now we have the "Canadian Dairy Products Association" and the
"Canadian Cheese Collective" governing our dairy industry. Rarely does a day
go by that there isn't another "cheesebombing" in downtown Flin-Flon or a
"drive by yogurting" at the Spuzzum (B.C.) Bait and Tackle shop.

At least it's fueling the creative fires, as new Yukon-based band "V8" is
rocking the Canadian music scene with their new single entitled "Sunday,
Curd-y Sunday".
