Ugh. This is what they have to call up? A 33-year-old player with a total
of 101 NHL games? Not a good sign when there isn't really a lot of injured
forwards.
Who knows what's going on here. They could be calling up a guy who
they're 99% sure will be a healthy scratch and is just there as
insurance in case someone gets sick on game day or hurt in the pre-
game skate (which has happened once this season already). Or they're
rewarding a guy who worked hard in Hamilton. Or giving him a shot at
being claimed on waivers on the way back down. Or punishing the other
more talented Bulldogs for not working hard enough to deserve a
callup.
There's lots of possibilites that don't involve "the Habs farm system
sucks." (Although I grant you that last one wouldn't be a good sign.)

Yeah. Darche is a respectable call up IMHO. I think in some ways the
Habs have been guilty lately of over-promoting their young players.
Of course, there are arguments on either side. But sometimes, if your
goal is to get the best immediate contribution for the NHL team from a
given callup, it's guys like Darche or last year Glumac or Lehoux who
might have been better recalls than some of our unready young
players.
The Habs farm system certainly doesn't suck. It has been churning out
players at an almost alarming rate recently. Guys like Desharnais and
Trotter and Benoit and Desjardins have been incredible reclamation
projects enjoying great seasons there. The team is doing well. Our
one blue-chip-esque prospect in Subban seems to be benefitting greatly
from a full undisrupted season there.

Dagostini and Paciorretty have been tried with not much success.
Darche played a number of games with Levavalier in 2007-08 and faired
well as an injury replacement. My guess is Martin wants his experience
more then to give NHL exposure to a promissing prospect.
A playoff spot is still up for grabs and in that respect, the player
that will help you win the game should have priority over other
considerations (like seing how a Desharnais would fair in the big
league). If a playoff spot becomes less likely, then I'm all for
giving the younger guys all the exposure they can take. It will
benefit both the player and the team in the long run.

The latest news is: Laraques and D'Agostini are out. Darche and
O'Byrne are in. They will be going with 8 d-men.
Maybe they are going to move Markov up to Plekanec's wing. I don't
know about Martin but I would be desperate enough to try that.
Darche has been as productive or more so than
guys that other teams have called up recently
(Ferriero by San Jose, Caputi by Pittsburgh,
Smith by Ottawa...).
Pouliot may be out too. He re-injured his hand fighting Redden the other
night.
