First off a caveat - the Habs didn't lose that game because of Watson.
They lost it because they flipped their collective wigs. The Refs are 0%
to blame for that loss.
Having said that, I wonder why people in the sports news seem so
oblivious to this. Fraser confirms what everyone knows, the refs will
lie and wait for Prust and by extension, the Canadiens. What this says
is that they will make a biased pre-determined effort to punish a player
and his team for what he said off the ice. So no longer can the refs be
considered an unbiased official in a game. Therefore I ask, what
difference is there between an official who takes a biased approach to a
game out of some sense of revenge and an official who takes a biased
approach to a game for money? There is no difference other than money
changes hands.
If anything, Prust and players like him who call out the NHL for their
bullshit should be hands off. Don't give them any more ammunition. The
NHL should be striving for NFL level officiating. You know why? Because
they officiate the game, they don't try to become part of the game. They
don't try and actively participate in the outcome of the game. Ask an
NFL fan to name an official. They'd look at you like you're nuts. Watch
a football game some day. Watch the penalties that get handed out
regardless of the time of the game. Never is there even a hint that an
official will turn a blind eye to a call because its late in the game
and they don't want to "decide the game". Not only do they make the
calls but rarely is there an argument and rarely if ever do people make
note of who officiated the game. Nobody knows, nobody cares - as it
should be.
But not in the NHL. We all know who the bad referees are - Chris Lee,
Tim Peel and now Brad Watson. The very fact that people are uttering
their names should have the NHL scrambling. The very fact that it is
openly confirmed that referee's carry revenge like a weapon to scare
players and coaches alike is an open admission that there will be a
future bias and a future pre-determination of a penalty which will have
an effect on the outcome of the game. Can you imagine for a second a
linesman calling an offside that wasn't? Imagine the uproar if it was
implied that he did that to get even with a player who did something to
him in a game several weeks ago? It wouldn't even be remotely
acceptable. But what's the difference between that and what Fraser is
openly admitting? Hint - there isn't a difference. This should be a
terrifying prospect for the NHL but it isn't. Instead it is encouraged
through their top secret handling of referees and their fines to anyone
who calls them out.
So how do you fix it? Easy. If Brad Watson knew he was going to have to
attend a press conference after every playoff game he officiates, just
like the coaches do, do you think he would have done what Prust alleges
he did? Not a chance. The referees should be held publicly accountable
and if there is even a hint of revenge on an official's part, he should
be fired immediately and they need to be made aware of that. The NHL is
openly encouraged the God complex and has for years. We all know its
true and we've all seen it a hundred times. In this day and age of cell
phones, microphones and constant in your face press, its only a matter
of time before a major problem will hit this league with respect to its
officials. They'd be wise to attend to this issue immediately. Fine
Prust? Sure go ahead. He deserves a fine for acting like a moron but
don't fine him for calling out the referee. He's doing you a favour NHL.
Fine the referee for his actions. Sanction him for his behaviour and
have a meeting with all officials and tell them they'll be doing Pee Wee
games next year if there's even a hint of bias and revenge in their
game. Lastly, tell them to brush up on their public speaking because
starting next year, they'll be front and center at press conferences.
Lastly, a big fuck you to Michel Therrien who only had this to say about
Prust - "what happens on the ice should stay on the ice". Nice defence
of your player there coach.
