There is no reason why Hossa should even make the roster this season, let
alone get third line duty over Plekanec or Perezhogin.

And two summers ago you may have thought the same about Michael Ryder
making the roster and playing above Jason Ward, Jozef Balej and Marcel
Hossa.
I can think of one very good reason for Hossa making the roster and
playing on a third line. That is simply if he reports to camp and
outperforms Plekanec and Perezhogin.
Let's not be too quick to bash our prospects. We have all seen
Théodore, Ribeiro, Markov and more recently, Ryder, Ward, Hossa &
Hainsey go through struggles in their development. I myself was one
prematurely concluding that Théo and Ribeiro would never amount to NHL
material. Happily, I have since learned otherwise.
Bash our prospects? Saying that 2 of them would be better than the other
isn't bashing. Hossa came over to North America and didn't live up to
expectations. He got a shot at the big leagues and didn't take advantage of
it. Hossa decided to go back to Europe this year instead of playing in
Hamilton, and he still played average. Why didn't he choose to stay like
Plekanec did and get more used to the North American game?
As for Ward, he is gone now.
Right. I don't know what Hossa did last season, but I'd assume it makes
sense to give him one last shot. If others pass him on the depth chart,
like Perehogin and Plekanec, then he'll be done as a Hab probably, but no
need to toss him before it's clear that there's no spot for him. I am
asuming he's on a two-way contract.

Sounds good.

It's use him or lose him time, and BG already chose to lose Jason Ward.
He might see some press box, but then there might also develop a nice
healthy competition between himself, Plekanec, and Perezhogin.
You never know what can happen if these three guys get cycled in and out of
the starting lineup.
Between the one year contracts and the rookie competition developing, I
can't help but think there might be a nice edge to this team as compared to
previous years.
