I watched global sportsline last night and they referred to Ryder as 'Red
Light' Ryder. Although used in a positive way it still brings back bad
memories of Racicot. I think it's time to review our inventory of
nicknames.

Here's a start:
Quintal - Q?
Komisarek - Komi or Komikase
Koivu - Saks
Langdon - Langer
Ward -?
Zednik - Zed
Begin - NEW - Pit Bull
Dackell - Dacks
Kilger -?
Dagenais -?
Sundstrom -?
Bulis -? suggest Bullet for his speed/name
Brisebois - Breezer
Souray -?
Bouillon -?
Rivet -?
Ribeiro - Ribby or the Magician?
Ryder - anything better than 'Red Light'
Markov -?
Juneau -?
Perreault - The Cloak
Theodore - ?
Garon - ?

Portuguese Wayne Gretzky. :)

I think 'Ribs' is what other players call him.

Rock. (I'm serious about that one.)

Like the Thunder that was mentioned.

Just thought of one for Ribeiro ... The One (as in Neo from the Matrix or
Gretzky minus Great) sometimes the way he dekes makes it look like he is
slowing time down like Neo dodges bullets in the Matrix.

The Habs have the most unimaginative nicknames imaginable.
Rivs, Ribs, Q, Sak, Zed, Dacks, are they even trying???? I guess none of
them will ever have a career in marketing.
I once heard Rivet call Bouillon 'Frankie Boo'. That was hysterically sad.

This kind of makes sense - I think Koivu means stone or rock in Finnish.
Can one of our Finnish friends confirm?

Koivu is Finnish for birch, a tree with white bark and green leaves, has
no leaves in winter.

Don't get me wrong; I do like him. However, he *is* slow and he *is*
soft. He as a nice scoring and playmaking touch ("vicious sting"), but
it only partly cancels out his defects. And besides, I'm not the first
to call him Portuguese Man O' War, which is in fact a kind of jellyfish.

Years ago, while Stephen Lebeau was playing in the AHL he referred to as the
shadow. I'm not sure why. Both he and Benoit Brunet were tearing up the AHL
in points.

How about Michael "Knight" Ryder?

That's based on the late 80s, early 90s show called Knight Rider who the
co-star of the show was called Michael Knight. The star of the show was Michael
Knight's car named KIT.

Patrice Brisebois about Ribeiro:

“He’s a great passer. He’s got vision and great hands,” said teammate
Patrice Brisebois. “He can make a pass to you without even looking. We
call him ‘The Snake’ because his moves are a like a snake.”
