If you were Rejean Houle and Mario Tremblay (yep, both of them!)
who would *you* assign as captain and alternates?

I'd go with:
C = Vince Damphousse
A = Lyle Odelein
A = Benoit Brunet

And in order, since we all know at least one of those A's would
be injured sometimes, the other possible candidates IMO:
1. Mark Recchi (for an A only)
2. Pierre Turgeon (for an A only)
3. er, do we have anyone else???

Future candidates:
1. Saku Koivu (think the journalists would mind a trilingual captain?)
2. Peter Popovic (for an A)
3. Brian Savage (well, before this season it seemed possible anyway).
*. Darcy Tucker (not with us yet, but just wait!!!)

This is an interesting topic GErry, considering many people feel Turgeon
is not a good captain. My C's and A's would be :)

C: Vincent Damphousse.
A: Lyle Odelein
A: Sako Koivu

I know what are going to say, its too early to give this guy A C :) but
he gives an all out effort every shift no matter what the score is, he
doesn't get rattled by the oposition but at the same time plays a very
tough game. WHen have you seen Sako take stupid penalties? I believe this
guy the qualities RIGHT NOW to be an assistant captain on this team.

Turgeon maybe for an A, but I still think Koivu is more of a leader on
this team than Turgeon is :)

Why Saku Koivu on the future? And you have neglected to mention Craig
Rivet who I think is a ldr type player!!

You did not count on Saku learning any French. He speaks fluently
already Finnish, Swedish and English and he has promised (I do not
kow if he has taken any firm action yet) to learn French. Then you
would have a quadrilingual captain.

I would not be too surprised if Sako would be the first European
captain in Montreal or in the NHL, because at the moment I can not
recall any.

The last minute shorthanded goal that save the Habs a point in
Boston is not worth the nomination of your Player of the Day?

Oho! Rather, I didn't count on him speaking Swedish. Back at the
start of the season he seemed able to handle French questions well
enough (though he preferred to respond in English since he wasn't
sure enough of himself) that I took it for granted he was well on
his way to fluency in French. Quadrilingual it is then! :)

Well actually, I posted that before the game, which meant Chris
Murray was my POTD for the first game against Boston. And yes,
he was suspended, but the Habs had such a poor game that I decided
to give it to Murray for his mildly amusing comment about somebody
probably owing Ray that hit he put on him. (Slow day for picking
POTDs, obviously). As for last night's win and today's POTD...well,
Saku had been my POTD for like a week and half straight prior to Murray,
so I figured it was time to recognize someone else for a change who
also put in a heroic performance: Jablonski.

Heyy...you know what?
That sounds very good.
I don't know why they named Pierre Turgeon (the flying frenchfry<---my
opinoin, don't knock it) the Captain over Vinny. You can't pull the "They
wanted a frenchie captain" thing because they're both French.

Oh well...maybe it's kinda like when the Blues named Hull their C because
he was ther <cough> "Big name player"

Oh well...

Finland is a bilingual country like Canada. Even though only about 7%
of the population speak Swedish as their mother tongue, most of us
leatn that in school and about half of the population speak it more
or less fluently.

When Saku was drafted he told the press (here in Finland) that he
intends to learn French, because he understoond that it was necessary
to speak it in Montreal. The papers told that the French teacher from
his old school has promised to help him and he for sure took some
lessons. After coming to Montreal he has stated, that he has been
doing quite well with English, and in the early days, when he was
still busy looking for housing etc. he told he has to postpone his
French lessons. Anyway, I hope that the Canadiens have learned enough
from the Mikea Keane incident, that they get Saku on some French
classes, before it is time to make him an alternate or a captain. :-).

I can agree with you, without Jablonski the last minute goal would
not mean anything. Saku had already another last minute goal, that
was in a losing case, as the red light had been flashing behind the
Habs goal once too often.

When Pat Lafontaine missed the better part of two years with a knee injury
former Sabre Alexander Mogilny wore the "C". That may not count as he was
not officially named captain, he just filled in for two years.
