Subject: Sharks re-sign C Vincent Damphousse

> SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- The San Jose Sharks today
> re-signed center Vincent Damphousse, who was acquired at the
> trading deadline and helped them reach the playoffs.
>
> Terms of the deal were not released.
>
> Damphousse, obtained from the Montreal Canadiens on March 23 in
> exchange for draft picks, had seven goals and six assists in 12
> games to lead the Sharks to a seventh place finish in the
> Western Conference. At the time of the trade, San Jose was seven
> points out of the final playoff berth.
>
> "We saw what the addition of a player of Vinnie's caliber meant
> to our team last season," said Sharks general manager Dean
> Lombardi. "He was a major factor in us making the playoffs and
> makes us stronger up the middle, is creative in the offensive
> zone and significantly upgrades our special teams. He fits well
> with our current group of forwards while providing significant
> character and leadership."
>
> By re-signing Damphousse, the Sharks surrender their first-round
> pick in the 2000 and a second-round pick, at San Jose's option,
> in either 2000 or 2001 to the Canadiens.
>
> The 31-year-old Damphousse had three goals and two assists as
> the Sharks were eliminated by the Colorado Avalanche in six
> games in the conference quarterfinals. Damphousse, who made
> $3.275 million in 1998-99, had 12 goals and 24 assists in 65
> games as captain of the Canadiens.
>
> A two-time All-Star, Damphousse has missed only 19 games during
> a 13-year career. His streak of 399 consecutive games ended
> with a suspension on March 27, 1996. Damphousse has reached the
> 30-goal mark five times and has led his team in scoring in five
> of the past eight seasons.

Doesn't this mean the Canadiens get the Sharks 1st round pick this year or next?

Sorry it doesn't. According to a newspaper article Reggie amended the
deal so as to give SJ the option of either giving us the 1st round
pick or if it is too high a pick they will give us either a 2nd in
2000 or 2001. So, it's good to know Reggie's so nice to everyone but
the fans.

Easy now. I believe in crucifying bonehead Habs management decisions
as much as the next person, but get the story right! San Jose's GM was
concerned about not having a pick in the first two rounds in 2000 if
Damphousse re-signed with them. What Reggie did was to amend the deal
to give SJ the option of a 2nd round pick in 2000 OR 2001. Montreal is
STILL getting SJ's first round pick in 2000. Actually, this trade was
one of Reggie's better moves...

Thanks for the update. I guess I didn't read it correctly. I swore I I
read something to the tune that Lombardi was concerned about not
having a 1st round pick next year and although he had the desire and
cash he wanted Reggie to amend the pick lower. Aw well, it's good to
corrected this way. :) Thanks for the update.

I think I'm gonna go get my eyes checked:)
