According to Jaques Demerse who said according to Bob McKenzie of TSN;
BG is offering up Koivu and Ryder straight up for Marleau.
They extolled the virtues of getting Marleau and unloading Ryder and
breathing life back into Koivu and seeing him rejoined with Rivet...

Thats a Gainey type pf trade if I ever did see one. Nothing for
nothins except habs give up 2 for 1. Go Gainey Go!!!!!!!!!! Although

The Bobbie Mac comment apparently did not name Marleau.
But I didn't hear it personally.
Everybody has been throwing in Marleau's name in a 2 for 1 deal but
that's ridiculous, and simply out of people's habit from using
Marleau's name for about 6 months now.

If we get rid of one soft centre and our top goal scorer for the last
two years and bring in another soft centre what would that accomplish?
Mind you Marleau is 27 or 28 or something like that. Which is
probably the only plus here.
It would bum me out to see Koivu in another jersey. But no more so
than what I'm feeling now.

I think it's hard for fans... and even some more highly placed NHL
observers... to really get a feel for the pulse of the modern trade
market. So even if they do get wind of any talks happening between
teams, they tend to totally blow the details.
It's assumed that if Marleau's name is going to be mentioned, then the
only logical return of value the Habs could offer would be Koivu?
Well, I don't know if that has to be all that logical. Koivu does
have that NTC. And Marleau is stinking out the joint with a $6.3M NTC
deal of his own set to kick in next season. These days, you can't
give away players with burdensome contracts. If San Jose is getting
any kind of frosty extremities about that forthcoming Marleau deal,
well, he might not quite so attractive a trade commodity as they
thought they had.
But there are lots of other elements kicking around to make the teams
suitable partners once again. McLaren can't get in their lineup much
anymore. They would like to dump him. He has size. If we had to
shed some salary back, well, hence the mention of Bouillon's name.
They don't seem to ever have been particularly enamoured of Bernier
over there. We know what advantages he might bring here. There's the
Ryder slump and the Sharks with an ace playmaking centre whose former
finisher (Cheechoo) seems to be right about where Ryder is, slump-
wise. (But hurt, and with a hatchling albatross contract instead).
So there's probably lots of room for Habs-Sharks chatter, even if it's
only speculative extrapolation to throw the biggest of the big names
into it.

It's perhaps another interesting dimension to the rumourmongering
boom. Previously rumour mongers would have to "invent" rumours. Now
they have to invent credible sources too. Ah well.
Have to say I'm relieved (but vastly unsurprised) to hear that any
talk of a Koivu-Marleau deal is indeed just more fabricated hot air.
