It is derrived from the word "Habitants", a word used to describe the
original settlers in what is now Quebec. There is speculation that that is
where the "H" in the Montreal logo stands for.

the team is officially named "Club de Hockey Canadien", or something very
close to that.

Well, that what's the CH means... Canadiens-Habs, it's the name of the
team... Les Canadiens-Habitants ;)
