Its why the NHL will never be anything more than bush league. They make
rules then when the going gets tough and they actually may have to step
in and make a difficult decision, they chicken out.

"The frustration boiled over for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the final
minutes when Evgeni Malkin jumped Henrik Zetterberg and received an
instigator penalty which could have meant the all-star centre would have
been suspended for Game 3 because league rules call for an *automatic*
ban in the last five minutes."

"However, NHL VP Colin Campbell rescinded the suspension after meeting
with the officials following the game. He said it didnt meet the
criteria for the rule and Malkin shouldnt be banned".

I'd ask Colin this if I was a Red Wings coach - please define the word
automatic. If its automatic then its like an offside or an icing call.
Its called, you shrug your shoulders and say "sorry fellas, dems da
rules". Had it been anyone other than Malkin, Crosby or a couple of Red
Wings superstars, they'd have flushed his ass. But not in the NHL.
There's two sets of rules in the NHL. One for the "real" hockey players
and one for everyone else.

Little wonder the officiating in the NHL is as bad as it is. What do you
expect when the leadership shows zero balls?

As much as I love the NHL, you're bang on Mike. Inexcusable to not enforce
the rules, just because it's Malkin and not some goon 4th liner. The Pens
coach was pure class after the game, saying something about the rule being
pretty clear as a bell, but the NHL brass has to step in and make it clear
to the world that the double standard is in place.

Show of hands - who here thinks that the Maurice Richard playoff suspension
would have been applied in this day and age? I'll bet the answer rhymes
with "doughbuddy".

Fucking ridiculous.

Did he rescind just the suspension or the instigator penalty?
