The Battle of Alberta is undeniably a rout.
After knocking them off 10-1, etc., etc., is there any doubts as to who
the best team in Alberta is now?
The answer, of course, is a laughing no. Edmonton rules, and calgary
has become a pee wee team. If any calgary fans want playoff tickets I
suggest they consult the Edmonton Oilers box office right away!
So in conlusion, the flaming faggots suck, while the EDMONTON OILERS

Just think Oiler fans...if the Flames continue to lie down for a
few more years, Edmonton might take the lead in the all-time series! Of
course, they'll probably be doing it as the Nashville Banjo Pickers...

BITE ME DOUGHBOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking at the standings today it looks like Edmonton is 13 points ahead
of the Flames. So when April comes and the Oilers are playing for Lord
Stanley's Mug and the Flames are on the golf course you can look back
fondly on February 5, the game where you outshot the Oilers.
Personally I think Edmonton will let you have that one and laugh all the
way home with the 2 points. Which would you rather have? Your team
must be pretty brutal when your only defense is "sure they won, but we
outshot 'em!" Hahahahahaha! Yes, I am laughing at you!

Well if Edmonton needs to get a team, I shudder to think at what Calgary
must need. Other than safety mats for the bandwagon. Edmonton kicked butt
for four reasons, 1) they can score goals 2) they have the best goalie in
the league, not like that cry-baby Kidd, 3) they can play better defense
than the Calgary Shames and 4) they're a whole lot more talented than all
the crap the Flames can put together. So the finally stat tells all, shots
don't matter dick, it's the final score on the scoreboard and the Flames
LOST, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSER! The Flames are what? Dead last in the western
conference? Boo hoo, Edmonton's getting dizzy looking down at the Flames
in the standings. Get yer act together boys!

Well gosh golly gee, where were you for the last 20 years period? Lessee
here, how many cups have the Flames won? One. How many times have they
bombed in the playoffs after excellent regular seasons? Too many times to
count. Take the good times with the bad times, boy. History is more than
a few years when talking about the Flames and Oilers. History is 5 Stanley
Cups, 6 Stanley Cup Finals, 3 Conference Finals, numerous first place
finishes, compared to what from the Flames? 1 Stanley Cup, 2 finals,
numerous bombouts in the playoffs after excellent regular seasons.
Basically I'm asking you this, who's won more Stanley Cups? The Flames or
the Oilers?
Oilers-5 Cups Flames-1 Cup Nuff said.
Brian
Although it's alot better than the Flames who are going nowhere but down I
guess.
Then I guess the battle of Alberta is over, and winning now
doesn't matter? Or maybe it only counts if Edmonton wins.
If you can't do the math by yourself....say, is that you Bonvie?
Yes...teams like Edmonton and Calgary, with loads of young
talent, are bound to go nowhere.
YEah, I mean out shoot us once in all the games this year and the Oilers
beat you each time but hell that makes you, who aren't even in the top
eight in the conference, better than the fourth place Oilers, because
you had more shots in one of the games you lost this year.
We always kick the Flames asses, so there were a couple bad years in the
rebuilding time but we're now returning to form and moving to the top of
the NHL while the Flames are stuck either missing the playoffs or losing
in the first round every year forever.

I can't believe someone is stupid enough to defend the Flames
goaltending. It is so obvious that Trevor Kidd is one of the worst
goalies in the entire NHL. He belongs on the farm. The fact remains
that in the battle of Alberta Edmonton outshines Calgary in every aspect
of the game. ESPECIALLY in goal. Next time time think before you type,
that way maybe you can hide your ignorance.
Down with the Flames.
Flame Hater.
Keep in mind, Curtis Joseph is 29, Trevor Kidd is 24. When Joseph was
24, he wasn't even a starter in the league and his numbers weren't even
as good as Kidd's are now on a more talented St. Louis team. Trevor
Kidd is a big goalie who is unfortunately getting blamed for much of the
Flames' woes right now. Sure he hasn't been as good this season as he
was in 94-95 but neither has the team. I think once the Flames start to
become a Cup-challenging team again, Trevor Kidd will emerge as one of
the top goaltenders in the league. Right now he's standing on his head
for us most nights but unfortunately the highlight reel picks up on his
rare miscues such as his pass up the middle to Jason Arnott. Let's get
off Kidd and Fleury's back and hope that the Flames as a team can pick
it up from now until the end of the season and make it into the playoffs
(maybe into 6th place to set up another classic Flames-Oilers showdown).

And why they did it then but won't do it again? Because they don't have
Gretzky and Messier. Let me put it this way, it was the Oilers who won
the team (in a collective sense). It was GRETZKY, MESSIER (etc.). No
team in that one. However, when the Flames won the cup, it was easy to
see that no-one player deserved it, the whole team did. THE FLAMES won
the cup that year. Granted, the FLAMES also bombed a few times and what
not. But, if you compare two teams, I think the most reliable stat would
be comparing then in their series' with each other. Otherwise you bring
in outside variables, you idiot. When you compare two sports cars, you
don't compare them to sedans. Do you? Jees, if one team consistently
beats another, then the first team is better. End of story.

HELLO SHITHEAD. Read that last sentance again, gee, that sounds like
Calgary right now! Um, loss of gretzky, messier, fuhr, Lowe, Kurri,
Tikkanen. Loss of Mullen, MacDonald, MacInnis, Vernon, Loob, Gilmour.

It always absolutely amazes me how Calgary fans always ignore the overall
picture, it don't matter dick all what the Flames have done against the
Oilers. The ultimate stat comes from the playoffs and the number of
Stanley Cups won. In the playoffs where it ultimately counts, the Oilers
have an overwhelming edge in victories over the Flames not to mention 5
Stanley Cups in a 18 year history compared to a meager 1 Stanley Cup for
the Bomb-outs in a 26 or 27 year history. Look at Detroit, they've gotten
all those President's Trophies the last few years, but have they won the
Stanley Cup? Nope. So, if you want to compare the two teams against one
another in their series stats, you can't use the regular season, the
regular season doesn't win the Stanley Cup as the Red Wings are perfect
examples of that. The playoffs win the Stanley Cup, and the Flames suck
the big enchilada in the playoffs against the Oilers. So maybe review your
little fantasy there a bit yourself first and consider your own closing
statement. Jeez, if one team consistenlty beats the other team in the
playoffs and wins more Stanley Cups as a result then the team that won teh
Stanley Cups has been the better team. Plain and simple. All five Stanley
Cup victories for the Oilers went through Calgary at some point in the
playoffs and all five times they beat Calgary or the Flames were too sucky
to get past the first round. But hey, live in your fantasy world, chum.
Ask anyone else who's NOT a Flames fan or an Oilers fan and isn't a buddy
of yours and they'll agree that over history, the Oilers are the better
team by far. Why? Just look at allllll the silverware. End of story.
Gretzky Mullen
Messier MacDonald
Fuhr Vernon
Lowe MacInnis
Kurri Gilmour
Tikkanen Loob
The Oilers talent was FAR SUPERIOR to the Flames talent listed above.
It is alot harder to rebuild when you lose players of the Oilers
caliber. Lets face it the Oilers were more talented than the Flames
until most of the players moved on. The Flames did win 1 Cup. The
Oilers lost Gretzky and still won a cup in '90 and made it to the
conference final the next 2 years without others (Messier and Kurri).
Much better than first round fade aways! The Oilers owner was unwilling
to pay for good players, making the rebuilding more difficult.
>>Fuck you Edmonton fans are dumb.>>
Do you kiss your Mommy with that mouth?
The funniest thing about what you wrote is that you compared MacInis,
Gilmour, Loob, etc. to Messier, Gretzky, Coffey, Kurri, and I could go
on forever.
The Oilers, even when rebuilding, beat you, and will continue to do so
because they have a hockey genius building their team and Calgary
doesn't.

I forgot that I was talking to a Flames fan and logic cannot penetrate your
tiny
brain. BTW, I think you should use your spare time (April and May would be
good,
while the Oilers are in the playoffs and the Flames are golfing) reading
about
goaltending and goaltending stats. The basic idea of goaltending is
keeping the
puck OUT of the net more than your opponent. (If you can figure this out,

you can explain it to Kidd) The team that can do this wins the game.

As an experienced goaltender, I'm always amazed at the armchair
goalie coaches out there who feel they are qualified to criticize a
professional. I know a great deal about goaltending as a matter of fact,
enough to know that with breakaways, screen shots, deflections, and the
quality of players in the NHL, you can't evaluate a
goaltender's performance by statistics. If that was the case, year end
awards would be decided by people like you, who don't watch the games,
and whose knowledge of the league is limited to knowing who "sucks" and
who doesn't. When I'm working with a ytoung goaltender, I always
encourage them to ignore people like you...

That would be a blast, wouldn't it?
E
Lets Look at this list of players again...
Messier vs. McDonald
What McDonald's brought to this city has been something that I've never
seen. In 8 short years here, he wrapped up his career in such a way
incomparable to anyone in the NHL before or after his time. Sure,
Messier put up bigger numbers than Lanny (though Messier never scored 66
goals in one season), but I think this comparison has to go deeper than
that. Messier would win this comparison if he stayed with the Oilers.
Fuhr vs. Vernon
Vernon has and always has had a better average than Fuhr throughout his
career. He's also had a better winning percentage.
Lowe vs. MacInnis
Al MacInnis always has been better than Kevin Lowe. Sure Lowe always was
a steady blueliner but you can't compete with a steady 80 to 100
point-a-season player like MacInnis was when he was with Calgary.
????? vs. Suter
The Flames were better overall in the defence department.. I can't even
think of another Oiler that could have possibly compared to Suter..
maybe Steve Smith? Of course, he did more for us than he ever did for
the Oilers...
Tikkanen vs. Loob
Esa Tikkanen scored 30 goals only twice in his career, and never more
than 80 points and even though he was good defensively, Hakan Loob was
consistently an excellent player, scoring more than 30 goals every
season in the NHL except two -- one because of injury and the other
because he changed his role in the team's Cup winning year and racked up
58 assists, along with 85 points.
Anderson vs. Nieuwendyk
Glenn Anderson had many great years in Edmonton but tailed off once
Gretzky left. Nieuwendyk consistently got 90 to 100 points each season,
barring injury.
McTavish vs. Otto
The best faceoff man in the NHL was a huge defensive force for the
Flames. Just ask Mark Messier, who had Otto hanging on to him most
nights.
Kurri vs. Gilmour
Kurri was a great player I must admit.. But the Flames also lost Gary
Roberts. Gilmour and Roberts together is a 150 to 200 point and 70 to
90 goal a season pair.
And while we're at it...
Hunter vs. Semenko
I'd call it a draw. If only because the linesmen broke it up too early.
The Flames also have a better overall regular season record than the
Oilers. Since the Oilers joined the NHL, The Flames are (660-487-191)
while the Oilers are (642-560-122). From 1986 until 1991, the Flames
were (236-120-44) and Edmonton was (207-148-45).
I'm sure we can comprimise at this: The Flames are better historically
in the regular season and the Oilers are much better historically in the
playoffs.

First, you can't compare Kevin Lowe and Al MacInnis, two different styles
of hockey, one was a defensive specialist while the other was in truth, a
powerplay specialist and an offensive specialist. If you want to compare,
compare Coffey and MacInnis.
Second, Fuhr I would take over Vernon any day, not because Vernon's a bad
goaltender but because when the money's on the line, there are few
goaltenders better than Grant Fuhr was at his best. Only other names I can
think of offhand are Patrick Roy, Mike Richter and Bill Ranford (although
this could be argued with his decline in play the last couple of years.).
Third, Tikkanen did something on top of scoring points and playing
excellent hockey, he irritated the snot out of other players and threw them
off their game and many, many times shut down the other teams top player.
Something Loob could not do.
Fourth, MacTavish was a penalty killer specialist, never known for his
"excellent" face-off skills, taking face-offs out of the picture and I
think you'd have to call it a draw because each player had certain areas
stronger than the other and weaker areas than the other.
Fifth, Kurri scored 50 or more goals how many times? Got over 100 points
how many times? Scored how many game winners? Gilmour was a good all
around player but it's common fact that Kurri was much enheralded for his
excellent defensive play as well as his wonderful offensive skills.
Hunter vs. Semenko, a draw? Not likely, Semenko viewed as one of the most
feared fights of all time, are least his ear. Hunter isn't mentioned. End
of comparison.
Flames overall record is better than the Oilers in the regular season, big
deal. Calgary fans have to stop living in the regular season, the regular
season doesn't win the Stanley Cup, something the Oilers have done 4 more
times than the Flames have and also have played for 4 more times than the
Flames have. The plain and simple fact is this, the Oilers have more Cups
and hardware than the Flames have. The Flames have nothing but one Cup and
a history of choking with all the players you named above for the Flames.

So what's the Flames sorry excuse for no Stanley Cups then during that time
period? The Oilers weren't there and they STILL couldn't do it.
So let's all watch TSN tonight (I know, I was shocked too) and watch the
Edmonton Oilers kick some ass!
> Winning cups? Edmonton? Not bloody likely. Flames average since they
> were in the NHL? What, were you dumb and blind from 86-91?
And at what point this season did Calgary go for seven wins in eight
games? (Actually, I should post this tomorrow so I can say eight wins
in nine games with less than a .001% probablility of error).
The Flames really do suck this year, no really check the standings and
you'll see my point. Oh, by the way, have you consulted the Edmonton
Oilers box office regarding playoff tickets yet? If you wait until the
season's over they really will be a mother to get.

Hasek would win it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before Joseph. Look at
Joseph's GAA. Last time I checked it was in the 2.6 range...not stellar
in the least. Then again, if you consider the team that Joseph's on, then
maybe he'd be the MVP, but then that'd saying something to the effect that
Edmonton sucks and is only where it is in the standings because of Joseph.
Somehow, I don't think you'd want to say that...

I agree here, although not with the inclusion of Ranford in there...

Who was he playing with for almost that whole time? It's hard NOT to get
50 goals when playing with Gretzky. Look at what he was doing in LA in
the last year he was there with those rookie wingers. They were scoring
quite a bit (not quite as much as Kurri, but Gretz wasn't in his prime
either) and now they aren't. The credit here goes to Gretzky with a
slight assist to Kurri.

Your points are all well taken. But my point is that all those comparisons
mean nothing because the only thing that matters is the numbers 5-1 and I
think you know what i'm getting at. ;)
Scott
We had the pleasure of watching a pretty good game, with
the Flames getting the nod in overtime. Nice to see Reichel getting it
together, what an asset his scoring will be. Hopefully the Oilers fans,
who are always polite and gracious in defeat, won't whine about the
penalty call in overtime, or the Oilers key players being sick, or Bob
Essensa in goal. And they have too much class to bring up all the old
Cup winning teams, which of course don't do you much good out on the ice.
I think tonight proved that when both these teams play well, they're on
fairly even terms. One interesting note, Oilers defenseman Bryan
Marchment left the game with heart complications after Ronnie Stern
challenged him to a fight.
:)
> You would rather have Hextall than Cujo?
So I was having a bad day naming goalies. My point was that Cujo isn't
one of the elite goalies in the league.

Must be biting your tong now eh? It was indeed a beautiful game last
night.
We may not have won 7 of 8 (though I'm not all that sure about that),
but we have won 4 of 4.

Actually, I'm not planning to consult the Oilers box-office anytime
soon. Even if I were still back west, I'd rather watch a good team on
TV, than you loosers live.
Ummm, what was that? Watch the Deadmonton whiners eat grass...Boy
did we stomp you pathetic gits. Get a life, get a brain, and most
importantly get a real team. Go Flames Go.

So I guess by your logic, becuase Ottawa has won 9 Stanley cups
they are the third best team in the league. I guess by your logic that
Toronto is the second best team in the league. I guess by your logic MTL
is the best team no only in the league, the best team ever. Your logic is
nothing more than the ramblings of a fool. Go back to Deadmonton.

Try cracked ribs pal!!!! Good thing for Stern, who hasn't won to many
tilts in the NHL that I have seen.

You people. Geez this is more interesting that watching a game between the
teams. Both cities had good teams. I can say that because I started out as
an Oiler fan, and Im now a Flames fan. So just take a pill and calm down.
We should all be glad these two teams are still around and still in
Alberta!

Nope, Sternie doesn't fight often, and isn't a heavyweight, but
it's the thought that counts I guess. Marchment always seems to walk a
little taller when Debrusk is in the lineup....

The sun even shines on a dog's ass sometimes. By the way when you learn how
to spell come talk to us.
3-2 in overtime sure is a stomping...now 10-1, THAT was a stomping. I think
flashpoint is out of powder with the exception of the coke he snorts.
Stomp? Uh, you won in OT, goofball. Half the team was sick too. What a
bunch of loooosers!
You'd rather watch the Shames than the Oil? Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!
Mush would never back down from a fight. Especially Ron Stern.
I agree Jennifer. I love the Oil, hate the Flames, but I'm sick of all
the "oilers suck" and "Flames suck" posts. We may not have an NHL team
in Alberta 10 years from now. Let's just support our teams and quit the
negative BS.
Brian
That should be the new Oilers motto...losing is acceptable if you
have an excuse.
> Mush would never back down from a fight. Especially Ron Stern.
Guess what...that's exactly what he did.

How mature.
So, my spelling isn't perfect, but it's probably still a hell of a lot
better than your french. Plus have you ever heard of typos?
Plus, I guess I got my point across pretty well, since your best
comeback was to insult my spelling.
Anne-Lise Piquard - the biggest (and possibly only) Flames fan in Ottawa
That's what I said. I'd rather watch a good team play.

Louie is NEVER in the line-up! Even if he is, he won't fight anyway.
That babbling of yours had a point?

But I thought you said you wanted to watch the Flames play??? Good teams
are teams that aren't desperately trying to stay in the playoff hunt.
Those are BAD teams, hun.

Yeah, we're 4 points closer to you now! :)
Anne, Anne Anne. Do you seriously think that Calgary is a better team
than the Oilers? I'd rather watch Ottawa than Calgary. The Senators are
going to be a good team. The Flames need to do some rebuilding.
Maybe you haven't been following the NHL for the past year or
two...rebuilding is exactly what the Flames are doing. At this point, I
would almost rather watch the Oilers play...that game against Anaheim
looked pretty entertaining :)

Yup, they lost a tough, entertaining game. The Oilers are ahead by
only nine points now. And your point is.....?

Well, historically speaking, that is correct.
As far as being the ramblings of a fool, it is at least ramblings that
can be backed up with hard quantifiable data, which is more than you
can do, isn't it?

3-2 in overtime... that is a "stomping"? If that is your definition,
then you are really in trouble. Oh yes, compared to a 10-1 score
against, I guess 3-2 in overtime would seem like a great
accomplishment to you.

BWA HA HA HA!
Now if that wasn't the biggest contradiction in terms ever - "a real
team. Go Flames Go." Enjoy the golf course come playoffs time.

Rebiulding in sports can be defined by the departure over time of
most of a contending teams best players, and their replacement with
younger prospects. We can see this all around the league, Edmonton,
Montreal, Los Angeles, all are in various stages of this cycle. The
Flames are no exception, with most of the veterans leaving the
organization in the past 5 years, to be replaced by young talent.
OUT IN
Gilmour Iginla
MacInnis Gavey
Nieuwendyk Kidd
Suter Hulse
Vernon Stillman
Macoun Hoglund
Otto Simpson
I know I shouldn't have to explain this, as it's fairly obvious
to anyone who follows the league, but not all of us on this newsgroup do
I guess :)
Sorry Flame man, the only good talent I see is Iginla(of course, I don't
see the Flames play that much). As for not following the "League", i was
following this "League" when you were still in diapers.:)
