Compared to what?

Yep, slow indeed. They sold 1,006 in the first week. Then they said that
was great because they hadn't started their ticket drive yet. Well, have
they started now? I haven't had the Herald since November, and I don't
read the Sun -- so what's with the other media types, namely radio and
TV? If they're using them they aren't in prime time, and they aren't
exactly flooding the market. If, on the other hand they haven't started
yet, what the hell are they waiting for? Do they want to see how many
renew before starting their push? If so it could be too late. They need
to strike while people are still interested in hockey, i.e. before
Toronto gets bumped out etc. I think they've taken a very cavalier
attitude, they should have blitzed the media and sold as many as
possible as soon as possible, but I guess they'll know what they have to
sell once ticket holders don't renew -- but this year they should have
offered some kind of incentive to their existing base to try and keep as
many as possible of them.

Arrrgggghhhhh, what's a fan to do? I bought my pair, what about you?

That's 1,006 _new_ tickets. From the time of their announcement to June 30,
the date when they'll make their decision to move or not, is ten weeks. At
that rate, they'll meet their target of 14,000 even if _more than half_ the
current subscribers fail to renew. If 10% let their old tickets lapse (a
fairly typical figure around the league, from what I hear), 1,000 per week
will give them over 18,000 sales by the end of June -- which is 1,000 more
than the total capacity of the Saddledome.

Please explain to me what's `slow' about that.

At present, renewals don't enter into the picture. They are only just now
sending out renewal notices to their current season-ticket holders. (They have
indeed started their season-ticket drive; what they haven't started is their
RENEWAL drive.) We'll find out soon enough if they're offering any special
incentive to those people. You have absolutely zero grounds to claim that they aren't.

Compared to the pace that was set early on. They're still in good shape, as
long as they get a 95 to 100% renewal rate before May 15.

They're not on that pace anymore though. Now they're on pace for about 5,500
new tickets by the end of June. If they only get 80 to 85% renewal (which is
what they've averaged most years) they will fall below the pace needed. And
ticket sales won't pick up until the middle of June when panic starts to set
in. My prediction is they have about 2500 new seats sold by June 15. That
means they're going to have to sell about 3,000 from the middle of June to
the end of June. It'll be up to the corporations to come through at that
point. That's a tall order.

Season ticket holders have one week and one day to submit their renewal.

Well, they're still ahead of your predicted pace so far. We'll see if they
fall off as much as you think they will.

Incidentally, I'm waiting till June to buy my tickets -- only because I'm
saving up some extra money, & I want to get the best seats I can afford. I
could plunk down my pennies for a seat in the nosebleeds, er, the Black
section, today, but I'd like to do this properly & get two seats in the Blues.
There may well be other people in my situation.

> Season ticket holders have one week and one day to submit their renewal.

OK. As I heard it, the renewal notices were only sent out a week or so ago. In
any case, it'll be a few weeks before we know how many people renew their
season tickets (& how many, if any, buy additional seats along with their
renewals). And if some of the season-ticket holders get their renewal notices
into the mail a few days late, I suspect the Flames will still accept their
money. ;-)

First week, 1006 new tickets
2nd/3rd week, ~600 new tickets (~300/week)

So for the next 6 weeks they'll get about 6 x 300 = 1800

1600 + 1800 = 3400 with only two weeks to go! PLUS whatever they have
to make up in dropouts from the previous season! I'd say that looks
bleak to me. Unless the corporate sector comes up big time

You can buy your blue seats for 10% down and 8 equal payments starting
in July +$3 a month in handling charges for your account ($1.50/ticket).

If I were you I'd pay up the $300 or whatever 10% of a blue ticket pair
is and choose my seat sooner than later. It would help to encourage
others to buy as well.

Norm

PS I bought a pair of greens the first week, I'd say my seats are almost
as good as the blues because I got in the first row near the blue
section. That amounts to a fair savings by making an early selection. Go
for it, when the season ticket holders that don't renew have their
tickets made available you'll be able to switch if any are more
appealing than your original choice, that way at least you have the best
of what's currently available.

They do have one ace in the hole -- corporate seats. I sure hope they
sell a lot otherwise it doesn't look good. 95-100% renewal? Maybe ten

existing season ticket holders to encourage a higher renewal rate than
normal. Not sure what they should've done, but I do know they didn't do
anything, other than raise some prices and ask for more money!

In addition to everything you have listed, they will also offer a 2-for-1
flight anywhere Canadian Airlines flies -- or if that deal falls through
this year they stated they will offer up something of similar value.

One thing, though. If we get this thing done by June 30, the team will add
money to its budget and start signing (or re-signing) some players who could
be key. If we get the 14,000 by June 30, we will have a better team next
season.

I agree there is no reason to wait. If you can afford the 10% down and
the eight payments you might as well get a head start.

And the "easy" tickets have been sold. But that doesn't mean the pace
will slow. The corporate sector which buys seats by the tens have yet
to step to the plate. Still, its probably going to be nip and tuck. In
fact, I would say June 30 is only the first of many deadlines in the
months ahead. If the team ends June 30 at 12,000 season tickets don't
be surprised if you see an August 30 date suddenly emerge. After all,
what's the hurry? You can sell the team just as easily in October
without crimping the buyers as you can in July. But if they actually
intend to sell the team then late November or December would probably
be the latest date to get it done for the next season and allow the
other party to get organized. Just don't believe June 30 is D-Day.

As a renewing season ticket holder I can tell you they haven't offered
any extra incentive to sign up again. In fact, they've come out and
said they aren't guaranteeing the two for one Canadian Airlines tickets
and secondly that they're raising prices.

I'll give the Flames this - they gotta lotta brass.
