Peca scored again and they beat Toronto for first place in the East. I
remember the detractors that said it was good for management to stick to
their guns and not give him the 4 mil. a year. He is worth every bit of
that. He's not the only reason for their success, but first place is not
a fluke. He plays a lot less than he did in Buffalo and they are tough
to beat.

We'll see if Hasek's poison ruins Detroit, I don't think he'll challenge
Boman's authority. Yzerman is the undisputed leader on the ice. They
have 3 or 4 Captain types to keep him in check. Hasek has a chance to
win Olympic Gold and a cup in the same year, I hope neither happens.

A couple of years ago, the Sabres lost $15M. You have that kind of cash to
make up for what Rigas won't cough up? I realize he's a rich man but he
didn't get that way by throwing money away needlessly. As far as Peca being
worth all that, there isn't anyone worth all that. The $3M or so he was
being offered was very fair. It's just that the big-name superstars like
Jagr keep driving the prices up on talent. Everytime that happens, ticket
prices go up. I haven't even been able to go to a Sabres game in a while,
partly because of lack of time and partly because of money. Last one I went
to was the home opener in 1999....when we raised the Eastern Conference
Championship banner.

I've heard from a lot of media people (Jim Kelley, some other WNSA hosts)
that Peca didn't want to come back here no matter what happened in the
offseason. Even if we did offer $4 mill./year from the start, he didn't want
to play for us. He wasn't coming back here no matter what. We did good to
get Pyatt and Connolly for a guy that had his mind set not to come back to
Buffalo under any circumstances. I trust Jim Kelley. He knows more about the
Sabres than anybody, other than the owner, GM, and coach.

Besides the cash, any idea what his glitch was?

True nobody is worth that much. It's sick that they get paid that much,
but that is the way capitalism works. A Ceo or Board member that makes
$2 mil. plus bonus is just as sickening.

Getting back to Peca, if he plays against all the best players and stops
most of them defensively, isn't he worth at least half what they make?
He leads by example, hits everybody in sight, plays PK better than most
and can score fairly well. If guys like Smelik and Gratton had half the
balls, we would win more. This whole thing is going to workout because
Connelly is fantastic, but the Sabres don't have the identity they had
with Peca. And let's not forget the Selke awards he won. Any captain on
any team is the most important player in the mix. The Sabres have lacked
such a player since his absence.

Peca only said that he wouldn't play here after it became clear that the
Sabres were playing hard ball with him in his contract negotiations. He
went out and got a high powered agent who told him he should sit out and
that he'd get more $ from some other team. Unfortunately for us Sabres
fans, he was right. Peca is better than any forward we currently have but
we couldn't afford him, I guess. I would have rather of given him the money
than Satan. And I think Satan is doing well this year. But Peca gave the
team character and an identity that they don't currently have.

I split back in '97... didn't really want to but the people that run that
city were continuing to run it into the ground, I couldn't take it anymore,
very upsetting. Buffalo could be a really cool town but noooooo.

My sentiments exactly. All that beach front property still mostly
undeveloped. Niagara Falls is a ghetto shithole. Here's a brain storm---
Build casino's.... before the canucks did! Western NY has a lot of
potential and the best people and food in the world, unfortunately the
leaders have no vision (or money) to better the town.
It's more than upsetting, it pisses me off almost daily. I mean, I had
to move away to make a living. I would have stayed had I been able to
make a meager living, but even that was a stretch.

And now with Sebt 11, it put Buffalo back another 10 years.

The political leaders running Buffalo are either lining their pockets, or
pretty stupid. But I'll take it a step further. The citizens of Buffalo need
to stand up and become aware of what's happening, instead of just waking up
every morning and worrying about themselves.
Here we have a perfect representation of a highly populated democrat (vs
republican) philosophy of government, and awareness of life and freedom
itself.
The acceptance of mediocrity. Buffalo. Reliance on social programs and
benefits. Laziness. Sleepiness. Dull wittedness. Too many elder uneducated
ethnic classes that can't comprehend what is being stolen from them.
All the resources available to Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago, are all about
the same really.
Yet who is a distant third, and why?
Yet who in Buffalo cares? Have a drink, a smoke, cross the border and do a
little gambling, and go to sleep.

As sad as that sounds, it's completely true. Union drones.

Tox,

Yeah I know all of that but like I said in my first response, Jim Kelley and
some other media members now believe that he didn't want to play here right
from the start - even before negotiations began. Again, it's just hearsay
but I'll take Jim Kelley's word over some weasely agent or Peca for that
matter.

The city government reminds me of Tammany Hall
(http://history1900s.about.com/cs/tammanyhall/) that ran New York City in
the 1800's, corrupt, incompetent, etc...

Stupid ass decisions about opening Gambling Casinos, oh hey, how about
another giant ass mall!

This past summer I went home for my High School reunion, while there I
visited my old bosses where I worked downtown. We were chewing the fat about
how I was doing out west, etc. Then my ex-boss tells me that my moving away
was a very smart thing to do. Like most ex-buffalonians, if there were
economic opportunities, I would have never left.

I left in '94. It's amazing, the times since then that I've plotted a
successful future for that city on a cocktail napkin. I do miss Buffalo a lot.

But if there's a silver lining, it's this newsgroup: had I never left Buffalo,
I would never have had the need to discuss hockey on the 'net, which has been
fun.

And thanks to guys like Kris who've stuck around to provide us with some local
perspective.

Yeah, and I feel like such a sucker for staying too ! But I'd never leave -
I just like the area so much ... I'll suffer through this bad economy and
get by somehow. I believe my good job is safe so i'm not going anywhere for
a long time ! (plus I wanna be here the day we finally win a championship in
this town. Could you imagine that ? Seriously, I could die in peace after
that).
