Smith says pass attack must 'get better'

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers ranked 29th in the NFL last season with an
average of 183.1 net yards passing per game.
But when quarterback Alex Smith talks about how the 49ers' passing
attack must improve, he does not cite those numbers.
"This is the honest truth: I could absolutely care less on yards per
game," Smith said Wednesday after the second day of practice at 49ers
organized team activities.
"I think that's a totally overblown stat. Because if you're losing
games in the second half, guess what? You're like the Carolina
Panthers and you're going no-huddle the entire second half and, yeah,
Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games, that's great. You're not
winning, though."
Newton ranked 10th in the NFL with 4,051 passing yards while the
Panthers finished with a 6-10 record. Smith ranked 19th in the league
with 3,144 yards passing for the 49ers (13-3).
"All of a sudden we're up in the third and fourth quarter and, yeah,
naturally, you're going to be in four-minute offense, you're going to
be grinding it out," Smith said. "You're going to be running the ball
a lot more. You're not going to have as many 300-yard passing games."
Smith, however, acknowledges there is a lot of room for the 49ers'
passing game to improve this season.
"We were so inconsistent when we had to throw the football," he said.
"Third-and-mediums, third-and-longs we weren't very good. Red zone, we
weren't good at times. We got to get better there."
The focus of these non-padded practices is on the passing game, and
Smith likes what he sees from his stable of wide receivers --
including three-year veteran Michael Crabtree, who has yet to have a
full offseason of work since coming to the NFL.
"We're a little further along," Smith said. "I feel good about body
language and things like that I've seen from him. The thing I'm
excited for him is not only is it his first offseason, he's healthy. I
think he's excited about that. He's feeling really good. It shows up
here. He's running better than he ever has since I've seen him. It's
exciting to see. I know a lot of the new faces are getting a lot of
attention, but he's doing really well here."
One of those new faces is Randy Moss, to whom Smith completed his
first two passes during an 11-on-11 session late in practice.
"The thing you appreciate a lot, the guy is a true pro," Smith said of
Moss. "He's played a lot of football and he's incredibly smart out
there. Seeing the defense, knowing what he's doing. His tools to beat
whatever he's facing. It's nice. Just talking to him about different
things, I'm even picking up stuff.
"He's easy to throw to, a guy that big and he catches everything.
Yeah, he's easy to throw to. He makes you look good."

watched the first three games of the 2011 season, and it's like a must
have third down pass, six yards to Crabtree, drop. A short pass in the
flat to somebody, drop.
