But most of us have ben here long enough to know that sticking your tounge out

Couldn't agree more. Hawks also have fans in the 10-13 age range that read this
group. Their parents probably aren't wild about having them log on and read
about someones rectum being compared to a wagon wheel.

I notice a disturbig trend lately that says "Hey, I'm a fan-that gives me
license to do whatever I want." Blabbering in a movie theatre during the show,
rioting in the streets after your team wins the big game, rushing the field ater
the winning soccer match and getting people hurt-where does it stop?

Interesting. Two days ago we were your new buddies-all interested in the
Seahawks. Now we are pathetic lowlifes because we aren't wild about you cutting
a swath through the other newsgroups with your mindless garbage, irritating all
the other groups, and bringing the reputation of this group down in the process.
Go figure.
Randy
You're right, footbal is fun. However trolling just to troll isn't that
wonderful. We're here for the long haul.....some have been here for the
REALLY long haul...
This newsgroup has a pretty good rep...we're not like the Fader's fans
(thank goodness!).
Talking a little smack with the poor hapless souls who favor other teams is
fine, but why not save it for the regular season. Also, if you troll other
groups to the extent they come back here and trash up this newsgroup you
will find no one reading your posts here.
And before you call group regulars "pathetic No-Lifes", take a minute to
think who started all this.
You're welcome to post, you're welcome to get excited. Just don't forget the
Prozac.

I have a couple of questions for you:
1. What proportion of trolling or abusive posts on Usenet originate from
webtv vs. "real" computers?
2. Even assuming you could establish a correlation between webtv and a
disproportionate tendency to troll, does the general principle that each
individual should be judged on his own merit still hold?
Keep in mind that your broadbrush defamations of webtv may seem cute and
sarcastic to you, but many individuals face a barrage of these insults daily
on whatever newsgroup they happen to be involved in, so may not share your
sense of humor on the subject.

It's not the language, but the content of the post. Specifically, the fact
I don't go trolling other ng's. And, it seems that the vast majority of
WEBTV people tend to do stupid inane things while online, like trolling.
NTM-their relative knowledge of the game seems always to be lacking.

WebTV'ers tend to produce poorly formatted posts. They also seem
to misspell a lot of words and engage in run on sentences. Capitalization
can be a problem.
Many times, WebTV'ers will simply type everything in "all caps", giving
folks the impression they are shouting.
Primarily, I suspect this is due to the interface. It also doesn't take much
to use a WebTV system. With a PC, there is usually a bit of effort involved -
a learning curve, if you will - and with that effort a knowledge of internet
etiquette is obtained. Many WebTV'ers are devoid of that etiquette, which
results in innocent peers being subject to prejudice.
AOL'ers suffer a similar fate, although lately to a lesser degree.
The best way to avoid being derided for being a WebTV'er is to take the
time to check your spelling, format your posts properly, and post using complete
sentences.
Refraining from saying stupid things also helps... ;)

Bunk. If you're a ex-CP/M guy, you should know better.
True, computers have become far easier to use since the "old" days, when
you programmed your own code if you wanted an app. But if I give a
know-nothing a computer with blank OE prefs, and a WebTV, he's going to
get one up and running long before he gets the other. Chances are,
he'll *never* get the other up and running without assistance. It's
become more intuitive, but not *that* intuitive.
This is truly the black spot of WebTV, which I think is otherwise a fine
appliance for folks with very limited computing needs. It allows anyone
to get behind the wheel and cruise the highway. The only reason we
allow that with computers and not cars is because you can't kill anyone
with a computer. But you can make just as big an idiot of yourself.
Are most WebTVers trolls? I kinda doubt that. But the first thing that
should pop up on a WebTV screen, when it's first turned on, is a pointer
to the internet FAQs. If they go on Usenet, they should get a pointer
to the relevant FAQs there, too. Especially the FAQs on netiquette.
Because, for whatever odd reason, it seems the noise-to-signal ratio
takes a nosedive when WebTV is involved. I don't think that's the fault
of WebTV or the user; I think its plain, simple lack of knowing any
better.

I'm not condoning the conclusion that Kevin seems to draw about all WebTV'ers,
and I use a PC. Why are you lumping me in with him (or are you simply doing it

Who related it to WebTV?

The PC is a superior tool, but WebTV can obvioiusly be used
to post clearly if a person is willing to put forth the effort. As I've said
time and time again - the message is the only thing that's important to me.
I could care less if they post from a high-tech etch-a-scetch.

So do you absolve me?
Exactly. :)
Anyone, using any platform, should read netiquette FAQs *before* they go
spouting on Usenet. Anyone. And it's not a matter of "telling anyone
what to say". It's a matter of laying down the ground rules, and
gaining knowledge on the expected behavior and courtesies, just like any
other social function. You don't go into a fancy party in your biker
outfit, dragging a keg and making a ruckus. You don't go into a biker
party in a tux, demanding that everyone put out their cigars. You do as
the Romans do, and if you don't, you're not going to be accepted, simple
as that.

Who said it didn't? Not I. Kevin's antagonism has plenty to do with
it, but he's never shut his flap in the past, so I don't see why he'd do
it now. Deal with it - the rest of us have.
> If only the niggers would conform, then we'd accept them.
Pulling out the racist label is beneath you, Steve. You don't choose to
be born to a race. You choose how you behave on Usenet.
Kevin, that may or may not be true, but it is NOT because of WebTV.
That is what Steve is trying to point out. It is because the user is an
idiot. It does seem that a preponderance of WebTV users are, shall we
say, not wise to the ways of Usenet. But if they were on a computer,
they'd be just as idiotic.
Frankly, your antagonism is causing as much noise as any of the WebTV
postings. You should lay off until you know a person is spouting, and
then, don't attack their platform, attack the poster. Much more
effective, and then we won't waste our time arguing about things like
this.
I see only one person mentioning WebTV here, and it ain't Bill.
> Of course, "real" PCers have all sorts of spelling and grammar checks built

That's called "using tools", for those of us who aren't so arrogant as
to think we can do it all for ourselves.
Seems like you have a bone to pick that is also unrelated to WebTV.
That's fine, but you should leave the WebTV insults out of it. That
just denegrates the other WebTV users who aren't jerks, and that's no
good (resulting in long, meaningless threads like these.....)

Here's one place I can lump most WebTVers in: most of you leave on that
wonderful "feature" that posts ridiculously large, irrelevant and
unnecessary plug-ins, html, and all sorts of other assorted garbage,
resulting in a signature that is usually 10 times larger than the actual
content posted. In your case, your sig even prompted me to download the
latest QuickTime - inexcusable. If you would, please remove this
"feature" for future postings, and I hate WebTv forever for allowing
this (even making it the default, I suspect?). Nothing personal; it
just isn't appropriate on Usenet, and WebTv should have known better.
Thanks,

My main compaint about Web TV are that many of them appear in a format that is
truly hard to read.
If someone continues to clutter a newsgroup with nothing but drivel, I put them
in a kill file. Maybe those of you who cant stand web tv could just add that to
you filter. Dont download anything posted by Web Tv.
For those of you with Web Tv, as a favor to the rest of us, please read your
manual and figure out how to format so we can read what you have to say.

Apollo and Dionnysus man, Apollo and Dionnysus.
On one side, rules, form, order
On the other stream of conciousness, irreverency, chaos.
You come down on the Apollo side most often.
I get a laugh out of this particular thread because
1) net etiquette has changed dramatically since 82 (when I first used usenet),
so in my opinion, there are no absolute standards of etiquette on the net, just
as there are not in social interactions (remember when you took you hat off when
you went in store / restuarant? I do - I grew up with that).
2) there is lots of behaviour by ALL regulars on this group that I consider in
poor taste and poor etiquette, so a lot of what I call the pot and kettle around
here - but really, it is not important enough for me to go all huffy duffy on.
3) I mean really, windoze users going ballistic over webtv? It is to laugh,
since the "rest of us" thought the internet was dead when all you windows people
started popping up....you know, who the "nuevo ignorant" are all depends on
where you are starting from. The truth? some good things on the internet have
died since windows become a broad internet connection.....AND a lot of good
things have happened also.
4) I suspect that 2 years from now, what we define as etiquette will have
changed - largely becuase the dynamics of who is on will have changed ( again!)
- and somethings will be better, and some things worse. Among other things we
all need to start realizing that people from many backgrounds - particularly
children, but not only children - are now here, reading and writing, and we do
not know age or background - that is something that has to be considered.
Bottom line is though, I welcome all the new diversity - just because change and
growth, and new ideas etc, even for a form of communication as old as usenet
(wierd to say that huh? I guess in computer years, it is old), can stand an
influx of energy etc everyonce in awhile.
So, newbies, amaze us with your new ways, new ideas etc. Dont worry Mike etc
will serve as the conservative bastion defending Apollo's temple against the
rising tide of madness......

Alright. There MUST be someone anal enough (not me) to go back thru deja news,
collect all the web tv posts, sort them into "stupid things" and "non-stupid" things,
and see how close Kev's estimate is. I realize we may have a problem defining what

Bird,
I can set it up to read in one format or the other. I am not going to take the
time in the middle of a thread to dowmload a post a second time in HTML just to
read it unless I know it is something I really want to read.
Personally, I don't care one way or the other. If a majority of webtv folks
post the way you do there would be less complaints from PC folks.
I am not flaming either, I am just trying to point out to a few of the newer
posters how to avoid problems, as a vast majority of people reading and posting
to usenet are using PC's.
I have read comments on how AOL is posters are all idiots so I am somewhat
sensitive to people picking on people just because of their ISP.
Hopefully a few people have learned a few things about usenet and we can about
the business of why we are even in this newsgroup.
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL ???

As for, you can set it up one way or the other and dont want to do that.
Then why are you asking us to set it up to everybody else's
convenience?. Its not easy for us to Remove our special feature either,
you know!!( thats built in ). Why do i feel like a minority.>
I appreciate the compliment about my "posting the way i do". This is how
i see it, " i dont care one way or the other as well". Though some
webtv-er's will argue other wise.>
HELL YEA, IM READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!

Mike,
Both I.E. and Netscape went through a period where they did all their
posts in HTML as a default. They both still produce some ugly garbage
if you let them. I refuse to use either one for newsgroup posting for
that reason. Every programmer thinks that his neat formatting trick is
the greatest thing since sliced bread (v-cards anyone?). WebTV will
eventually realize that a minimal, clean, default is the best approach
and let people add the fancy stuff as they learn how. A lower entry
point requires smarter software, and WebTV doesn't have it yet. The
problem is that, in order to compensate for the simpler software, you
need to have *more* educated users, rather than the entry-level users
who are drawn to a < $300 "Internet tool".

Considering that html was developed for use on text-based unix
workstations back when windows 1 was a hot item I think you are
missing a bit of the point. It is not that a PC can't handle this
stuff, merely that it is annoying to be forced to deal with it. Why
should I download a 50K posting when the same post made in plain text
is only 8K? It may not seem like a big deal if you are where you can
get a cable modem and only download a few things a day, but if, like
me, you rely on a rather poor phone system and can only get 24K
connections on a good day, it starts to make a bit of a difference.
I realize you are being a bit facetious here, but the point truly is
that the extras, no matter how pretty, get in the way of delivering
your message. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but I can read
ten thousand while I'm waiting for your picture to download - if you
get my general drift...
Tim Douglass (When it comes to graphics people used to tell me "you
can't do that on a PC, you have to have a Mac." I figured out ways to
do it on PCs and discovered that the price/performance ratio was all
on the side of the PC. Readily available *generalized* hardware will
ultimately always beat the specialized stuff.)

Tim, if you happened to notice, im on a webtv. Yet, i can format as

I'm going to jump in with one comment here. I use webtv at home - and I
hate HTML. Even on webtv, it takes forever to open a post with a HTML
signature. I don't care to see anyone's cute little gif, or the temp in
their home town, or especially hear their midi of the day - at a decibel
level that makes my cat jump. So I don't open them.
If you want to contribute to a newsgroup, and be taken seriously - don't
post with a HTML sig. Simple as that. And, contrary to what others have
said - it's simple to remove that sig - click on the button that says
"remove signature".

Finster's law: A closed mouth gathers no feet.
And it's happened many times over in history. At first only propertied males
could vote, and at every step of widening democracy the "in" group complained
bitterly about the impending doom of civilization. Webtv is somewhat
analagous to the Voting Rights Act. It doesn't matter how smart or dumb or
literate or illiterate or rich or poor you are, you have a right to
participate (having said that, I also want to emphasize that webtv does not
necessarily = tool of the poor and iliterate; there are many different
reasons why people use it).

I didn't express that as well as I should have. Simpler tools (or just
more accessible ones) often require *more* skill on the part of the
user to achieve the same results. You are making the point I intended
because you clearly knowledgeable about your system and its
capabilities, therefore you (and a lot of others) produce good, easy
to read, posts.

I'm not denigrating WebTV, I really don't know a lot about it's
capabilities, although I did spend a bit of time studying one at
Wal-Mart the other day after this thread started, but I would be
willing to bet that *anything* you can do with WebTV (except buy one
with petty cash) can be done with a PC, and often with a great deal
more flexibility.
Incidentally, when I refer to "educated users" or "knowledgeable
users" it is not a reflection on a person's general knowledge or
education. I know a lot of very highly educated and very knowledgeable
people who don't know anything about computers or the on-line world.
In that arena they are not knowledgable and, if they are wise (a
concept that has nothing to do with knowledge, education or
intelligence) they will take some time to add to their knowledge by
learning about the system they are using and how to best fit into
their new on-line environment.
Again, this really has nothing to do with WebTV, it is just the latest
lowering of the bar for entry to Usenet. That is not necessarily bad,
it simply means that either the culture will change (it has in many
ways already) or the new users will eventually adapt to the existing
standards. My point is that those who know how to do things with WebTV
should be educating those who don't.
