Danario Alexander to be 'big part' of Chargers offense

There's a chance Robert Meachem returns to practice next week.
Eddie Royal, too.
But when the wide receivers return to the fold, don't expect Danario
Alexander to disappear from it, coach Norv Turner said Friday.
While not starting in Thursday's win over the Chiefs, Alexander saw
starter reps, appearing in 34 of the offense's 48 snaps. He ran a sharp
route on all three of his targets, catching them for a team-high 61 yards.
Last week, the Chargers signed the third-year veteran to a one-year
contract. The 6-foot-5 and 217-pound receiver spent his first two
seasons with the Rams before being waived in late August after missing
most of training camp with a hamstring injury.
He's healthy now.
"Danario's going to play. We're going to play him," Turner said. "He's
going to be a big part of what we do. He earned that right last night.
It gives us another guy, and we can roll them and keep them fresh and
use all the guys we have."
Alexander and Seyi Ajirotutu, who was signed Monday, both stepped right
in Thursday for Meachem and Royal, who were out with hamstring injuries.
Ajirotutu caught a 28-yard pass on third-and-5 to extend the Chargers'
opening drive. It ultimately led to a touchdown reception from tight end
Antonio Gates.
Two of Alexander's catches came on the team's second drive.
He gained 11 yards on an out route and, on third-and-2 in the second
quarter, caught a quick inside slant against cornerback Travis Daniels
before turning upfield and making a cut to the outside. The 30-yard
reception set up a Nick Novak field goal, pushing the lead to 10-0.
"I don't want that to be the high point of my time here in San Diego,"
said Alexander, who brings the nickname "DX" from his days in St. Louis.
"I just want to keep building on that and keep making plays. Whenever my
number is called on, I just want to step up to the task. ...
"I feel like I'm a pretty talented guy. I just want to show that every
week, week in and week out."
With the Chargers, it appears he'll have that chance.

He's not Chris Chambers, but a mix of Ajirotutu and him might give

Rivers the ability to throw high and away from coverage and expect the
receiver to come down with it. Rivers will never have that with Royal
and it doesn't look like Meachem is a fit in this offense.
I think AJ put out a feeler for Carolina WR Steve Smith but Carolina
was likely asking for a 2nd rounder which is too high for a 33-year-
old.
