They tried the emblem on one side as a trial basis.(to see if they liked
it)They just never changed it.I guess it's a if it ain't broke don't fix
it type of deal.

Here in Chicago, one of the radio personalities on a local sports-talk radio
station posed the same question. Some guy called in and said it was because
they were selling "helmet" space for companies to place their
advertising...hence the U.S. Steel logo. The caller said they simply never
found another sponsor for the other side. I'm from Pittsburgh, but I've never
heard about this. Can anyone confirm or deny?

No, this is not true. Indeed the logo was only put on one side because
management wasn't sure if they liked it. Putting it on one side was to
denote that it was on there for trial purposes. The logo ended up
staying, but it was never added to the other side. The current logo was
never put on there as an advertisement, either. After naming the team the
Steelers, they chose to try using the then-popular logo of the steel
company. Being a copy of something else, plus non-football and
"non-steel" looking, the owners just wanted to test its appeal.

Originaly the Steelers didn't have any emblem on their helmets, but in the
1960's the steel industry asked if they would display the steel symbol on
their helmet. So the Steelers agreed and they put the emblem on one side
just for a test. Since then the symbol has remained only on the right side
of the helmet.

Back in the 60s teams started adding logos to their helmets. Rooney got
US Steel to give the Steelers their logo, but he wasn't sure what fan
reaction would be so only put it on one side. They went to the
championship game (or was it semi-final?) that year (I think this was
back before the SB) and Rooney thought it was good luck to have only one
side. Thus, they have remained with only one logo.

The emblem on the one side is an interesting story. Way back when teams
started putting emblems on their helmets. Well, Mr. Rooney wanted to
follow the trend, so he got the US Steel logo for the Steelers. However,
he wasn't sure weather or not the fans would like it, so he put it on
only one side of the helmet. That year the Steelers got to either the
semi-finals or the finals of the NFL championship tourny (not sure
which) so Rooney thought it was good luck and kept it on one side.

If you read the book (I forget the author's name) that came out last year
around X-mas (I bought it for my bestfriend, but couldn't afford one for
me)--this guy goes through the whole history of the Steelers up until
SBXXX. It's a *must* read book, but anyway, he describes how they put the
emblem only on one side as a test to see how it looked. That's how it's
been ever since. I wish I could remember the name of the book exactly
(but no doubt it has Pittsburgh Steelers in the title, and is considered
the "official" history). This guy talked to everyone who had ever been in
the Steelers organization.
