One thing strikes me as a big difference between the '05 Steelers and
the '08 Steelers..

In '05, I didn't expect them to win in the post season. Every
victory, while not exactly a "surprise," was something of a gift. And
that was one hell of a ride to live through.

The '08 Steelers feel more as if they're meeting expectations, rather
than exceeding them. With their defense, which may be the best
defense I've ever seen take the field, I expect them to win. During
tonight's game I had some doubts... in the 4th quarter I felt they
lost the momentum and were set to lose... but the defense came through
like they're supposed to.

I don't know what to expect from the Cards, since I haven't followed
them AT ALL. So I don't think I'll go into Superbowl Sunday expecting
a victory, so much as I'll go in feeling the Steelers have an
excellent chance at victory. But the Bolts and Ravens... the Steelers
just took care of business. Anything else would have been a
disappointment.

I know what you mean. I remember after the Bengals victory thinking, "Well,
this was a great season. We can build for next year." Because there was NO
WAY anybody thought they'd beat the Colts. That was the real Super Bowl.
And then I remember not being too excited going into the Denver game because
hell, Cowher never wins AFCC games. It wasn't until halftime of the Broncos
game that I really thought they were gonna do it. There was such a huge
discrepency between the AFC and NFC that year, but I don't think that exists
this year.

SuperBowl XL was certainly a "gift", courtesy of the referees.

The OP brought it up, and has to accept the fact that most (75%) NFL
fans believe the "one for the thumb" carries a huge asterisk. Take
away the bad calls--Rothlisberger's phantom touchdown, the ticky tack
OPI in the endzone, the "illegal block" on Hasselback, etc., and the
Steelers may still have won, but we will never know, will we?

A travesty that every real Steeler fan understands and has to live
with. The most controversial and ill-officiated championship game
since the 1972 US-USSR Olympic gold medal basketball game.

Sorry uncle bob but you're wrong, we don't "understand and have to live
with" your fantasy of the Steelers winning SB XL because of the officiating.
What you and many others (but certainly not 75% of all NFL fans) fail to
address is the bad calls that went both ways in that game. The Steelers did
benefit from more of them, we know that, but not game deciding ones. The
officials didn't let Willie Parker run for 75 yards from the line of
scrimmage on a single play. The Steelers won that game, and it's not tainted
by the poor excuses the NFL calls refs for any of us. Your whining and
crying, three years later, just continue to bring a smile to our faces!

Prior to SB XL I didn't have much of an opinion on the Seahawks one way or
another. No one really did, because they sucked and didn't ever pose any
real interest to anyone outside of their few fans. When they made it to the
SB I was happy for their fans and the team, and that only changed after I
saw what whiny little pansies their fans, coaches and QB really are. That's
something YOU have to live with, and we'll continue to celebrate being fans
of the greatest franchies in the NFL.

:-)

Sure, and your "is not, is too" rebuttal doesn't change what 3 out of
4 fans watching the game know is true.

I said this at the time, and I'll say it again:

If the Steelers had won that game fair and square, I would have given
them their props as one of the best teams of all time. I grew up
loving the Steelers, the great teams of Lambert, Greene, Bradshaw and
Swan--I saw the Immaculate Reception live and almost jumped through
the ceiling as the hated Raiders took it on the chin.

But SBXL, and the incessant inability of Steeler apologists like you
to admit that the Seahawks got screwed has made me and a lot of other
fans who formerly rooted for the Steelers very bitter. Admit that you
got away with one, and maybe the rest of the country would look upon
the Steeler nation as a group with integrity, instead of bunch of
mindless homers.

I still have that game Tivo'd and periodically I pull it up and show
the controversial calls in slo mo frame by frame to guys who didn't
have a dog in that fight--I have yet to find someone who didn't feel
the calls were bad, and were obvious momentum breakers that came at
crucial points during the game.

In the next two weeks as the media beats the crap out of every angle
including what Warner and Rothlisberger eat for dinner and where they
buy their gas, some sharp will pull up footage of SBXL and go over the
disputed calls. Take off your black and gold tinted glasses, look
again, and realize what everyone else in the country knew four years
ago. Don't expect the NFL to talk about it on their network or during
the pre-game--its a black mark they'd prefer to forget about and sweep
under the rug.

Raiders fans still consider the Immaculate Reception to be poorly reffed,
even though it has been verified that some Ohio State Thug touched the ball
first. It was verified on a Physics journal. That is less controversial than
any call in XL.

The Steelers were fucked out of two fumbles that game.

Offensive interference is a penalty.

Funny thing is, all the "whiners" you speak of weren't remotely
confined to Seattle. They included Viking fans, Patriot fans, Charger
fans, Dolphin fans, Redskin fans, 49er fans, Titans fans, ad
infinitum. Unless you were a hillbilly from WV or had black lung
disease, or were laid off by Bethlahem and managed to scrape up the
scratch to buy some trailer in a Florida swamp you "whined", because
you knew that the either the refs were exceedingly incompetent that
day, or if you were a conspiracy buff thought that the fix was in--
what a huge shot in the arm to NFL coffers for another Pittsburgh win!

Its also funny that you decide to attack Seattle and its team when
last I checked, ESPN, USA TODAY, CNN, SI, and The Sporting News are
not located there, yet columns from all of those respected sources
attacked the officiating of that game. Polls from those same sources
showed that an overwhelming majority outside of northern Appalachia
felt the same way.

Not really, Brian.

Everyone I've shown the game to has been a football fan, and since I
was living in Detroit during SBXL, I was the only Seahawk fan I knew
of where I lived--the same goes for where I live now. I've shown it
to (among others) Lions fans, Packers fans, Buccaneer fans, AND a good
friend of mine who is a dyed in the wool Steeler fan who was pretty
hammered during the game. All of them agreed with me.

According to Google Groups, this Steeler group has over 400
subscribers which is not inconsiderable given the state of Usenet
today. Probably 2/3 of them only lurk, but I would guess that more
than a few agree with me that the game was poorly officiated and the
outcome of the game was likely affected by that poor officiating.

Google "superbowl XL officiating" and fully 48 of the first 50 hits
are critical.

Coincidentally, I'll be in Tampa (not going to the game) for this
upcoming game, maybe I'll find some Steeler fans and give them a hard
time about their last SuperBowl "win", but if they beat Arizona
without any help from the refs, they'll get my congratulations.

just that - bullshit.

the game. Here's a team that is tied for the least amount of

And just about every penalty came at a critical juncture--nullifying a
good play, eliminating good field position, taking away points.

I am guessing most Steelers fans had their beer goggles on during the

Interesting link. The biggest ones that I still remember are Jackon's
PI call and Locklear's hold. The Roethlisberger TD, I think, was a
judgment call that people largely let go of. I think Locklear's hold
is problematic to people because Seattle had a TD on that play.
However, the flag was thrown way before the pass was even made, so the
refs couldn't possibly be conspiring on the play and Locklear was one
most penalized linemen for holding that season, so the refs were
probably paying special attention to him. On the Jackson PI, I think
that was the correct call, but it often does not get made, which is
the real problem.

The thing that cracks me up about this clown's analysis, is that several
times he claims that the exact same sequence of events would happen if a
particular penalty didn't occur. In other words he'll discuss a "phantom"
penalty on the Seahawks during a punt/kickoff return costing the Seahawks
"X" yardage. Then the Seahawks will get to the 40-yard line of the Steelers
in some number of plays, and then either miss the FG or punt. He says that
if you added that "X" delta yardage that the Seahawks lost due to penalty
many plays earlier, they would have been much closer to making the FG!

As I said -- this is *PRICELESS*! I was already feeling great about the
Steelers being back in the Super Bowl, but this article has put the cherry
on top of the day! X-D

Yup, I have. My teams have "gotten lucky", "backed into (a playoff or
championship)", "had the stars line up just right", etc. I have joked
with opposing fans that we cut the refs a bigger check when bad calls
favored us. That's the difference between a real fan and a homer.

Homers "see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil" when it comes to
their team. Some fool on this board actually claimed that the
Steelers "kicked Seattle's ass", when no such thing happened.

Last night, The Ravens played like crap, but towards the end of the
game they were only down by two points and had the opportunity to
drive down the field and kick the go ahead field goal. Had they done
that, and held on to win, I would have told any Baltimore fan that
they were lucky as hell given how they played. (Thanks the USC thug,
it wasn't to be.) And while I didn't see the play in detail, I would
have at least entertained Steeler claims that the touchdown that was
called back was a bad call.

When much of the country (as shown by the poll results posted above)
agreed with me about the officiating, it has to make you wonder if its
not just *you*. And claims of "Steeler envy" nationwide are
ridiculous--an entire generation could have grown up, graduated from
college and started a family between Steeler Super Bowl victories. To
anyone under 30 outside of Pittsburgh, their entire frame of reference
regarding the Steelers was that one tainted victory--the earlier
history of the Steelers would have about as much relevance as the
Brooklyn Dodgers would have to my generation.

You would rather grasp at officiating calls. I would've sworn
Roethligberger was in (curious how the complainers posted pictures
well after the forward progress).

The same grasping that doesn't dispute the OPI, but that the ref
waited a 'suspicious' amount of time before reaching for the flag.

In the meantime, you'd rather not talk about the atrocious clock
management, the missed field goals, and the big plays given up.

Bad fans blame the refs, because they can't accept their team got
outplayed.

Ah, but we're the homers... Do you freeze the Roethligberger TD 2
seconds after Tatupu contacted him, and not before where he has the
ball high up on his chest, over the goal line?

One thing the whiners gloss over is, on the OPI call, the next play
was a run (for a loss), run, incompletion, followed by the field goal.

Same thing happened to the Steelers in the game. They got sacked, and
then passed to Ward at the 3.

Even Holmgren couldn't admit he screwed up the clock.

Second offensive play in the second half, 75 yard TD run... I know,
thanks to the *cheating* refs... uh-huh... riiight. Whatever.

Hell, ESPN is digging up 2-year-old stories about a doctor associated
with the Steelers buying HGH who was let go. He didn't have any new
information, and says that the $150,000 he bought from a medical
company had a "street value" of a million dollars.

Hey, it's easier to talk about how "we wuz robbed" than try and be
competitive...

Maybe there's not much to dispute. You can poll the yutzes all you

Ah, so it wasn't necessarily the calls, it was when they happened. So
they're not supposed to call egregious fouls because they can change
the game.

LOL!

Hardly. I TiVo'ed the Ben TD, and saw it. The positioning on the OPI
made it pretty obvious (both arms, the defender jumping back).

One thing I argued is, last time we played the Ravens, there was a
controversial TD. You'd be amazed how many people don't know the
difference between the goal line, and a dead-ball line.
Best part was, there was a very similar situation in the HS state
championship game. QB scramble (in double OT), got tripped. His legs
cross the goal line. No TD, because the ball didn't.
Ref gave the wrong explaination, but ultimately the right call (they
saw ball over plane, and two feet down). If his feet are in bounds,
it's where the ball is.

You know how many homers argued that

(:54) (No Huddle) M.Hasselbeck pass incomplete to D.Jackson. Ball
caught out-of-bounds.
Timeout #1 by PIT at 00:48.
2nd and 10 at PIT 40 (:48) S.Alexander left tackle to PIT 36 for 4
yards (B.Keisel).
Timeout #2 by PIT at 00:13.
3rd and 6 at PIT 36 (:13) M.Hasselbeck pass incomplete to D.Jackson.
Ball caught out-of-bounds.
4th and 6 at PIT 36 (:07) J.Brown 54 yard field goal is No Good, Wide
Right, Center-J.Darche, Holder-T.Rouen

The first play was actually in-bounds because he hit the pylon with
his foot.

Start a petition, why don't you....

OK, so you've whined all day -- tell us how you would fix this. You want
Stiller fans to boycott this Super Bowl? You want the NFL to nullify the
win over the Seahawks, or revise history and award the Seahawks the
trophy? Or do you just want to be disgruntled and get your jollies by
trying to make the Stillers and their fans look bad?

How did the announcers announce it? John Madden ain't biased against
the Steelers, heck no! Funny how the term ticky-tack was used, and
everybody was saying the calls were ticky-tack.

I don't know, when I look at penalties, I generally look at how it
could've been called that way (I'm not popular on my soccer team when
I say I would've given you a yellow card for that tackle myself). I
don't see what I want to see.

I'm amazed how many people don't understand the rules. They're
generally called when it affects the play (generally how it works in
hockey, soccer, and football).
The pushoff looked pretty obvious (two people together, a pushing
motion, and they go in opposite directions.. Why would the ref come to
a conclusion that a pushoff occurred?) . Argue they're not supposed to
call it because it takes a TD away, then you get into silly-land. Like
I said, we had an OPI call, and we got a TD on the drive. Seattle got
a field goal. It was downhill from there.

Fact is, neither team really wanted it. Seattle wanted it less.
Pittsburgh got a few big plays, and that was the difference.

I don't care how many polls you come up with. Not proof.

I am not whining about Texas, Oklahoma, Florida or USC being ranked

I am talking about real life true facts stuff.

I'm not whining about any of those schools being ranked higher than my

You aren't talking about real life true facts if you ignore two fumbles,
offensive PI and the fact that you need a better TV capable of telling that

Polls that Seahawks NGs votebomb? I wish Ron Paul had won the election, but
those polls were inaccurate. And aside from Mike Holmgrem's whining, I
haven't seen any serious complaint.

I have seen lots of Seahawks fans whine about it, but never in person oddly

Big difference between giving "the business" to Steeler fans you know and
doing it with random people at the stadium during the Super Bowl... don't
you think?

I do agree, fighting over a game is stupid, especially when we're just fans
and not actually playing in the game. That doesn't change the fact that it
happens, all too often. But maybe I misjudged you on that one, so as you
suggest I'll lighten up! Peace.

Their game plan was to stay close and wear down the Steelers' defense,
towards an eventual come-from-behind victory. That's how they play on
offense in the hopes of shielding Flaco. It's how they played all
year. And it was close to working Sunday, if not for a fantastic play
by Polamalu. The Steelers just did a better job through the first
three quarters preventing them from doing anything at all on offense
than I think the Ravens anticipated.

It was the right call, and pretty obvious in slow-mo. Though I would
like to see some clarification on it. A touchdown is scored as soon
as the ball crosses the goal line. Why if a player catches it in the
field of play and falls into the end zone must he retain control after
he hits the ground? I thought a TD was possession and crossing the
line. If he caught it at the 10, danced into the end zone, and had
the ball fall out of his hands after it crossed the goal line, but
before he stepped into the end zone, I think it would still be a TD.
So what's the difference?

Well, first of all, I have to admit I am guilty of projection--the
Steeler fans didn't officiate the game but there is no
alt.sports.football.pro.NFL-referees, AFAIK.

I realize what a huge deal Steeler football is to people in Western
PA, (parts of ) Eastern Ohio, Kentucky and West VA., but you've got to
understand where *I* am coming from. I am a Space Needle/747
Seattlite, not a Starbucks/Microsoft/Amazon Seattlite. In my lifetime
my town has won *1* professional championship, the 1979 NBA title. I
watched the the Mariners win 116 games but lose to the boutique
pitching staff of the Yankees in the ALCS. During the years Jordan
was playing baseball, the Sonics won 62 games one year and 57 the
next, but lost (despite having a winning record against every NBA
team) in the first round because Gary Payton "was trippin'". During
the Seahawks AFC years they made it to the playoffs regularly under
Chuck Knox, but lost some heartbreaking (but undisputed) games.

I watched the Seahawks get sold to a California realtor who did
everything in his power to emasculate the team so he could trigger an
attendance based escape clause so he could move the team to L.A.

And, although it is not a professional sport, I watched my 1991 UW
Husky football team, one of the most dominant college football teams I
have ever seen be forced to share a national championship with a
vastly inferior Miami team, thanks to East Coast AP voters.

So when my 12-4 Seahawks beat Carolina decisively, shut down Steve
Smith--I ponied up the equivalent of two mortgage payments and headed
down to Ford Field. I was surrounded by black and gold--Steeler fans
probably outnumbered us 4-1 at least. The guys around me were a good
bunch of guys, no one there was an asshole, and we bantered back and
forth the whole game. Even though there were few of us, you Steelers
got a taste of how loud Seattle fans can be. If you were there, you
know what I am talking about.

The Steelers couldn't do a damn thing. Three and out twice, while the
Seahawks moved the ball well with a good mix of pass and run. Your
loudmouth Porter was essentially shut down by the Seahawk OL, despite
his big talk before the game, and the guys around me started to look a
little sick. Eventually the Hawks work their way down into the red
zone--I see our receiver hand fighting with the Steeler defender, he
gets grabbed twice, but wiggles away, the pass comes--TD! A few
seconds later, the flag comes out, and I am thinking, we'll decline it
of course. Suddenly the ref announces OPI and the entire Seahawk
faithful jump to their feet and boo. The guys around me look like
they've been pulled back from a precipice--dodged a bullet.

And on it went. When Rothlisberger made his dive, I was on the phone
to a buddy of mine in Seattle who said he never made it, but the Ford
Field people didn't show the replay. (When I saw Ben on Letterman a
few days later, I almost puked). Seahawks would make a big play and
the flag comes out, again and again. When Stevens finally caught a
ball inside the five, I knew that Shaun wouldn't be denied the
endzone--it was as good as gold, but out comes another flag.

I left that place not with the hollow empty feeling one has when their
team is beat, but feeling angry and ripped off. I couldn't watch the
Tivo for three days until I had calmed down, and in the interim the
national press had a field day with the officiating.

For the rest of the country who agreed with the Seahawk faithful that
bad officiating affected the outcome of the game, this is ancient
history, and is forgotten. For a Seattle fan like me, who has been to
the mountain but couldn't make it to the top so many times, it was a
bitterness I'll take to my grave.

So those of you who say its all sour grapes--I'm not on the Yankee
group complaining about the umpiring in the 2000 ALCS, I'm not on the
Denver Nugget group complaining about '92 NBA playoffs, I am not on
the Chicago group complaining about the Bulls/Sonics final--why would
I? All those games were fairly played and the other teams won fair
and square. Those losses bother me, but not like this.

You Steeler fans know what it is like to live and die with a team--you
might have blinders on in regards to that SB, but at least appreciate
what Seattle fans are feeling, and will feel, the rest of their lives.

Even if he didn't, how do we know how the game would have progressed
from that point? Maybe the Steelers score a TD on 4th down. Maybe
Seattle, having to start from their 1 cm line, gets sacked in the
endzone, Pittsburgh gets a safetly and then returns the free kick for
a TD. I've seen lots of failed TDs near the endzone that have worked
out a drive later.

Don't be silly. The Steelers have one of the best defenses in the
league. But given Balmer's dearth of offense, they'v got to execute
the rare open play when it occurs--they didn't.

If its flat numbers that's true, but most of the polls I saw had a
breakdown by state. The better polls (ESPN, SI) record your IP and
don't let you re-vote from that IP.

Not totally infallible, but reasonably accurate.

Do your own google search--there's plenty of commentary from across
the nation that supports my position.

As for me, I'm not going to be one of those Seahawk fans that holds a grudge
forever, but as for this touchdown thing: A molecule or two of the tip of
the ball may well have crossed the goal line. If so, then it really is a
touchdown. No argument. But it would be nice if the other side admitted that
even given that, this would have to count as probably the closest touchdown
in the history of the league. (But you can all pretend that he ran it out of
the back of the endzone if you want.) My stance has always been: some of the
calls were highly debatable and controversial, but the Seahawks *still* had
a chance to win that game and failed to do so. If we had won, it would have
been indisputable. As it is, bitching, whining, and arguing over details
will never turn that loss into a win.

I'm 7 miles from the stadium. Lived here all but 3 of my 42 years.
Since I've been a kid, Pittsburgh teams (in the NFC, I'm a Lions fan,
had a lot of cousins there). Big on the Pens (and endured quite a bit.
I remember being up on the Isles 3-1, and losing the series). The
Superbowls were when I was young. My dad never was into baseball too
much.

I went to a lot of high school games (my Mom worked the concessions).
I did a lot of official-type stuff as a kid, and am looking forward to
being a ref. Played soccer in college (little bit of hockey, my high
school didn't have a team in either). Even in college, we'd go watch
the Titusville Rockets.

I also feel for the Canucks... Tiger Williams was a brute, and they
knocked on the door a few times. Ken Griffey Jr. was a classy guy.
Even the Zorn/Largent Seahawks, I could respect them.

Dallas, not so much. Same with the Eagles and Giants. Had family in
Cleveland, and Baltimore (later), so I don't hate our rivals (it
sucked when the Browns left).

We in Pittsburgh have had our share of droughts. I'm worried now with
the talent we have if we'll make the playoffs (we're 8th now).

After I saw the slo-mo on that, I can see why the ref called it. Push,
and the defender jumped back. Thank Michael Irvin if anyone.

As a Pens fan, I've sat through many a beatdown. I was at the 2004
AFCC, it was cold, and we laid an egg. Beating Indy in 2005 was as
close as it could be.

I watched Detroit hoist the cup in our arena. Just had to shake my
head, and know we have to be better next year.

This year for the Steelers is somewhat of a surprise. Last year, they
went out with a whimper.

When the Steelers lost to Dallas in SB XXX, I had a job interview in
Virginia. He was a Dallas fan. I flat-out told him that the Cowboys
were probably gonna win, but don't take the points. Man, we were in
that game.

I was on a hockey team, and we went 1-9. That was the worst feeling.
We had some close ones, even the lead late, and we'd lose it. I'm on a
soccer team now, and we're 3-0. I've had to make the painful
realization that they're not going to win with me in goal (in my
defense, I did have a heart attack last year, so I quit smoking,
changed my diet, and am about 20 pounds lighter now. But I can't be
the kamekaze I used to be, and I know that's the difference. I'm in
better shape now - I'm a little over 190).
If the Steelers lose, at least I'm in good enough shape to play
forward now (I can't ever forget that. Can't wish a heart attack on
anyone... Let me tell you they suck). My NFC favorite has been in a
coma now for what, 2 decades?

At least Lindros never hoisted the cup.
At least we did twice.
Seattle hoisted the cup.
They'll hoist a Lombardi trophy, once they get a good system in place.

Look at what the Cubs, and Indians have had to go through. How about
the Blackhawks. Would you trade places with a Bills fan (4 straight
SB's, you had Norwide, Thomas losing his helmet, and 2 blowouts. Now
they're moving games to Toronto)? How about the Lions? The Eagles
(chokers, Reid is an idiot)?

The Houston Oilers (I remember playing them twice to go to the SB.
They were a tough bunch, but had to play us. Then they went in the
tank, and in the moving van).

The Cleveland Browns, and the Baltimore Colts, who basically had their
teams stolen from LOYAL fan bases, basically kneecapped so they could
be moved (Irsay tried I swear for 15 years to make them bad enough to
move). Then they win championships after they move.

Madden is still upset about the Immaculate Reception. Buffalo had the
Music City Miracle. Cleveland? The drive.

I guess I'm saying, you can't look at what they accomplished that
year?

You also get into what-if territory. The Steelers did get some big
plays on them. Another thing is, take away any two of the calls, and
the outcome doesn't change, does it?

And as a fan of football, I have to say look at the play calling. Like
I've said before, we had an OPI call also, except we got a touchdown
(and the play after the penalty was a sack no less). Seattle ran
twice, threw an incompletion, and kicked a field goal.
Seattle seemed to move, but the way the plays were going, they'd
eventually end up with 3rd and long (and generally going incomplete,
or missing a field goal).

The best way I know to deal with it, is to try again. The NFC West is
definitely undergoing a sea change. SF is getting better. AZ got
better. SEA needs to keep up with the competition (STL I think is in
the crapper for a while). In 2-3 years, I expect it to be the group of
death.
That level of competition actually makes you stronger.

I think what the ref saw was he had one hand on the ball when he
extended it, and didn't quite have it firmly in two hands. The other
aspect is the vague 'football move'. I don't think he took a step so
much as jumped towards the endzone (one foot != football move).
If you don't make a football move, then you must keep posession when
you go to ground. The ball can touch the ground in the process, but
the reciver must maintain control (the ball can't bounce out of the
grasp when it hits the ground. It's ok if posession is established,
but in that case posession isn't).

Where his feet are don't matter (a rehash from the last Pit-Bal game
is the feet matter when it comes to the dead-ball lines, but the goal
line isn't a dead-ball line). It's where the ball is.

I don't know how many comments I saw disputing the Jackson catches out
of bounds. I am not surprised that they can still enter polls however.

It also doesn't exclude bias from the announcers... You have an hater
(John Madden) and an apologist, and suddenly the term 'ticky-tacky'
enters the public lexicon...
And the contradiction of something being not callable because it could
be ticky-tacky is a subtlety lost on the general populace.
And - people don't realize that flags are MORE likely to be thrown on
big plays, as they should. Is it fair to keep the flag in the pocket
because the block in the back would nullify the return TD?
Finally, just about every ref I've seen will warn people before they
start throwing hankies (especially the more judgement calls like
holding and interference).

Here's a question I wished they would've asked:

A receiver makes a reception close to the goal line, heading out of
bounds. He gets one foot in, and kicks the pylon with the other foot.
What should the result be?

1) Touchdown
2) Incomplete Pass

74.3% Might say touchdown, but still doesn't make it right.

I'd note also there isn't much dispute actually that a flag could've
been thrown on the Jackson TD reception... The real question is
whether the call was ticky-tacky.

And, like I said, you can take away two calls, and the outcome doesn't
change.

From my standpoint (I TiVo'd it when it happened). Ben had the ball up
high, before he got hit (high on his chest, under his chin almost). It
was over there (by maybe 1/5th of the ball, 2-3 inches maybe). After
he got hit (and something that keeps me coming here is people posting
pictures not showing the farthest progress), the ball ended up closer
to his breadbasket.
But then the cry comes up "well, the camera might not have been
right on the goal line, so it might've been behind".
The call on the field was TD also. So it was inconclusive.
The ref coming up was looking for a reference point, and when he hit
it, signaled touchdown. Not suspicious.

What a maroon! ($1 to Bugs Bunny)

So for a game in which the fans had nothing to do with the outcome, you
want said fans to write off the win and ignore that it ever happened.
You want Steeler fans to not be fans of the '05 team because you believe
that Super Bowl win is tainted. You want Steeler fans to disown that
team and join you in your bitterness because you feel the chickenhawks
were cheated by the officials and the NFL. You want Steeler fans to be
subdued about the upcoming game because the last SB appearance really
doesn't count for anything.

You don't ask for much, do you -- especially from rabid fans of a great
franchise.

OK, Stiller fans -- don your best black outfits for the upcoming game to
make unklbob feel better (and we'll overlook any gold trim that might
show up). Soundly boo any and all officials, no matter what they do good
or bad for either team.

It's the least that can be done for such a damaged individual.

yeah, I just stopped reading right here.........

It's fashionable to hate those miami teams of the late 80s/early 90s.
For many reasons. And despite the fact that don james had some great
teams at Washington, i don't find very many people who hate
washington. So i'm pretty sure thats why so many people want to
rewrite history wrt that 1991 season. Both teams accomplishments were
a complete draw that season in just about every way.

who was the better team in 1991? who deserved that title? Hell I
don't know(having watched many of the games and gone over all the
results). And anyone who does say they know is bias and/or trying to
change how that season played out.

washington had the more polished offense. miami had the better defense
(anyone who watched the nebraska games could see this). Both teams
had a very close game during the year. miami's closest game was
"closer" of course, but it was also to probably the third most
talented team in the country that year as well........

as for the steelers/seahawks game, get over it. PI is a judgement
call. So is holding. You got the bad end of the deal on both of
those calls....deal with it. it happens sometimes, but it doesnt make
the result any less valid.

You have the answer, ex-Colt fan and ex-Redskin fan. The Eagles are a rival
of the Cowboys. The Stillers are very much the Penn State of the NFL. There
is a respect for tradition and stability. They both have no patience for
dogfighter types, unlike the Hoaxies. They both win, with the Stillers
having 5 Super Bowls and Penn State having 5 perfect seasons and 2 MNCs in
my lifetime. They both play football the way it should be played:
fundamentally sound with hitting that makes consumers of tampons like
yourself shudder from hits like Ryan Clark's on Willis McGahee - or in your
extremely feminine view, Hines Ward.

For the record, I am also a Sabres fans, who cause the Flyers to change
their coaches after their drubbings. I suppose you think that's odd too.

There are plenty of people in PA who have the same allegiances that you
mentioned above.
