Is there any chance at all that Joe Gibbs would return to the NFL and if
so is there any chance at all that the Raiders could sign him?

It is widely thought that Gibbs would return to football in an advisory
role, but that coaching is too much of a lifestyle change for him. He
doesn't want to give up his racing team and his family time, so there's
really no time left for coaching.

Would he quit auto racing for an NFL coaching job? He wouldn't come to
Oakland anyway...

Gibbs returning to Redskins

Robb Crocker
Richmond.com
Wednesday January 7, 2004

If you grew up in Washington, D.C., in the 1980s and early 1990s, there was
always one constant: A winning season from the Joe Gibbs-run Washington
Redskins. From 1981 to 1992, Joe Gibb's Redskins won 124 games (losing 60).
In addition, Gibbs holds a 16-5 playoff record including three Super Bowl
wins in four appearances.

Why are we talking about Joe Gibbs? Because at 5 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday),
Gibbs will be named head coach and president of the Washington Redskins at
their Ashburn headquarters, according to Will Norman, a Washington Redskin
media representative.

Gibbs has agreed to a five-year contract, he announced on his NASCAR racing
team's Web site Wednesday.

"The desire to coach has always been with me, even after being away from the
game for 11 years," Gibbs said.

"The Redskins are very dear to me and my family," Gibbs said. "We're very
excited about this opportunity to return to where we have so many friends
and loyalties."

Sources are also disclosing that 63-year-old Gibbs has already begun
assembling a coaching staff that will include former Buffalo Bills Head
Coach Gregg Williams and former Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals Head
Coach (as well as former Gibbs-era assistant) Joe Bugel.

Since Gibbs retired from football, the Redskins have reached the playoffs
only once and owner Daniel Snyder has had little success with coaches since
buying the Redskins in 1999. Since Gibbs left the Redskins after the 1992
season, Redskin coaches have had a combined record of 74-101-1.

"Joe Gibbs helped define what the Washington Redskins stand for-integrity,
hard work, determination, winning and championships," Snyder said. "Who
better to set our strategy and lead the Redskins back to championship
glory?"

Previous coach Steve Spurrier resigned last Monday after serving only two
years of a $25 million contract. Spurrier had an overall record of 12-22
after amassing 122 victories and a National Championship in his 12 years at
the University of Florida. Spurrier went 7-9 and 5-11 in his two seasons.

Gibbs will have to sell his minority ownership with the Atlanta Falcons and
has already transferred ownership duties for NASCAR's Joe Gibbs Racing to
his oldest son J.D. Gibbs racing team has won two Winston Cup championships
with Bobby Labonte in 2000 and Tony Stewart in 2002. His youngest son is a
Busch Series racer.

Gibbs, who, in 1981, was an unknown assistant with the San Diego Chargers
hired by then owner Jack Kent Cooke, was known for keeping long hours, even
sleeping at Redskin Park. When he retired in 1992, he cited health reasons.

Gibbs hopes to follow in the footsteps of Bill Parcells and Dick Vermeil.
Redskins' fans will want a mirror image of Vermeil, who after a 14 hiatus,
came back in 1997 and led the St. Louis to a Super Bowl victory after the
1999 season. This season, Vermeil has the Kansas City Chiefs in the
playoffs. Parcells, after a two year layoff, lead the Dallas Cowboys into
the playoffs this year.

The difference between Gibbs and Parcells and Vermeil is that Parcells and
Vermeil stayed close to the game working as studio and game analysts. Gibbs
was an analyst for a brief period before directing his full attention to his
NASCAR team.

Among NFL coaches, Gibbs holds a special place as well. His 140 wins is the
14th best in NFL history, accomplished in just 12 seasons, six seasons less
than his 13 counterparts. His all-time win percentage of .683 remains the
best among all NFL coaches with more than 125 wins. He was inducted into the
Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996.

The Redskins interviewed former New York Giants Head Coach Jim Fassel,
former Minnesota Head Coach Dennis Green and former Philadelphia Eagles and
Green Bay Packers Head Coach Ray Rhodes over the past week.

This is SO great. Parcells is way bummed about the news, I'm sure.

Cheers!
