This kid has proven just how he good he is when he has some space.

He's awesome, runs people over, his last name is Greene, he's from
Jersey. Enough said.

Sign him up on the cheap, now, Jets.

We have him cheap for another year. If I am his agent I wait in see
as he has warranted big bucks with anyone yet.

He will be 28 in the 2013 season his FA year. How much do you pay
him?

For the rest of the season the Jets play the 30th-ranked -- 3rd easiest -- schedule of opposing run defenses, says FOers.

So Shonn may start looking suddenly better than his 3.8 until now. Re-sign him now before it goes to his agent's head.

Assuming the information on this website is accurate,
http://www.spotrac.com/top-salaries/nfl/running-back/
I would extend his deal two years at $4-$5 per year and give him an
extra mil this year (since we have the cap room). That money is between
the 5th and 6th best backs according to the web site.

That way we get to keep him if valuable and it only cost us a mil and he
gets the right to insure himself against injury for real money and the
knowledge that if he says, in three years he be rich.

He's the 5th or 6th best back in the league, at 3.8 per?

Yikes, that's a lot of money for a guy who played one good game. :)

RBs are cheap these days. They don't have to do anything with
Greene. If he suddenly becomes a great back, they can franchise him
in two years and it won't cost them a whole lot of money.

Mark, I am probably with you on this. Even a team like the Steelers
that doesn't have a Brady, Manning, etc. has used how many RB's in the
past 7 years.

How much angst did Lamont Jordan cause in here?

You guys miss my drift. I would pay him a mil now since he is locked up
this year and next in order to add two years at a top salary. If he is
not a top salary back, we cut him and it cost us only a mil in year we
had cap room. If he develops as some hope, he may be worth half or less
than what a top WR makes.

I would call this planning for the future without locking us into a
future or wondering if our next RB is another Ducasse or Anthony Clement.

I think Mark is saying don't sweat it. You can franchise him or a
year or find someone else's Shonn Greene cheaper.

What the Hell are you guys seeing in him that I flat out do not see..he runs
with his head down most of the time....he is good, but not great and nowhere
near the level of quite a few other RB's around the league. I want him to
show me something more...can he even really get to the outside if he has to?

Trouble is, he's looked really good in the playoffs. I know that was
behind a great OL and he'd not been pounded all season long, but it was
mainly off-tackle stuf (IIRC). I don't think he knows which way the
outside is, let alone knows how to get there.

I don't think Greene is fast enough to get around the end. If those are
designed sweeps, then they shouldn't be called for Greene. If he is
bouncing outside because the hole he expected in the line didn't
materialize, then he should be told to just man up and plow into the
line anyway where the hole was supposed to be. At least then he might
pick up a yard or two instead of losing three or four.

OK...so guys want to pay him like a top RB in the League and he can't get

great blocking and something opens up, that is not a top level RB.

Papa he isn't horrible. He is actually pretty good at doing what they
ask. He is on par to rush for 1000 & that is after the start with the
OL blown up due to injuries. BTW Did you ever watch Hunter run
blocking in the last game? I thought there was a reason to have some
hope.

Right now you have 2 vastly different RB's & McKnight shows some
promise as LT's replacement.

As for finding someone I am talking about FA RB's to fill in not make
trades for anyone. Someone else will be faced with the same choice we
will make on Greene.

Percy, I don't think he is LT. I think he can do some of things LT
does: receiver & decent runner. I hope he can fill the void in the
near future when needed. I think he could be a better outside runner
than LT currently is.

If LT goes down then blitzing Sanchez is a staple of every game. I
also to this day have never seen anyone get 1 yard more effectively by
diving than LT. Last year he touched the 260 times & we got a 1st down
42 times.

LT is why you don't overpay Greene. There will be another one out
there.

And that was my point. The biggest issue with the front office / CS of this
franchise (with me) is they let guys go and do not replace them with equal
quality. The backs they have today are not as good as what they had with TJ
and Washington and the O line today is not as good as then. I don't see
McKnight as a guy who will do more than play a "role" in certain situations.
Could he? I have no idea, and neither does anyone else unless they have had
direct contact in working with him. And....I do not think that Greene is
performing as a top level RB at this point. Now...that said, he could be
just so frustrated with the blocking that he burries his head and just
plows ahead. It did look better last outing...let's see if it can improve

It is just insane that they couldn't get an upper level degree in

My wife's great aunt was a fantastic woman and a Jets fan. We used to go to
the games with her till she was in her mid 90's. She loved football.
Because of some family connections she knew some of the players from quite a
few years ago too and they would actually come see her from time to time.
She passed away a couple of years ago. Anyway, she had two friends who were
Nuns in a convent not too far from The Meadowlands. She asked me a few
times to take her to visit them. It was actually a blast, we went out for
lunch and it was always a tremendous learning event for me. I kept my mouth
shut and listened and learned. These were women who used to take a ferry to
go to NYC...no bridge was there yet. I heard the entire story of why the
Nuns became Nuns and you are quite right about what drove it. One was from
Ireland, and she had very little other choices to make. They had very
devoted and productive lives. Both of the ones who were friends of our Aunt
spent their lives helping in hospitals and with the disabled. There is a
lot there to be admired. For me....that Nun I'm referring to had a sign in
her office....it said, "Football is not a matter of life and death--It is
much more important than that." She never missed a game. I loved Mondays
at work when she would talk to me about how my linebackers performed. She
was in her 80's and knew what she was talking about too. She told me she
liked my coaching style because I rarely ever hollered but always talked to
players coming out of the game by taking them aside and "alone." I do miss
those days....all of those Nuns are gone now. They were all very well
educated too and very smart.

Exactly so. You don't get rid of somebody just because "he sucks". You get rid of him because you've got somebody better -- otherwise you're weakening the team.

After all, if the guy really sucks it's easy to get somebody better than him.

If it's not easy to get somebody better than him, then he doesn't suck.

From rushing 172 yards/game (1st) to 92 yards/game (28th). Looks like they got rid of a bunch of players who sucked.

Yup, but there are people in this newsgroup who've defended those moves saying those guys "sucked" and "had to go".

But it doesn't really matter, same result. If you get rid of people *before* you have replacements for them -- either because they suck *or* because of finances -- your "ground and pound" running game upon which you have based your O and team's character drops from 172/game #1, to 90/game #28.

That's the bottom line. Get rid of successful players before you have replacements for them, pay the price. The reason for getting rid of them doesn't matter. 'Nuff said.

Do you think LT fit the ground and pound scenario? Do you think he has much
left? Do you think Greene is the answer? You have to look at the entire
picture, not just pieces of it at a time. They had the most successful
running game in football, they CHOSE to dismantle it and did not replace the
entire package with a better one, that's it. The whole thing is what plays
the game, not just one piece at a time.

Jones & Washington both would have struggled last year with the loss
of Faneca. I can't remember how many times he pulled & popped a
defender so they could break free outside. LT is a better pass blocker
& receiver than Jones. Washington had 100 yards last year and he never
saw the blitz coming in his entire career. For the record I wanted to
to keep him as McKnight is still a big ? You know he wil break out
his 4th year when he is eligible for FA.

You can not compare a player who moves to another system...not the same
blockers, not the same system...most players take a step back and neither of
them are in top systems compared to where they had been. So...if LT and
Greene are so good why is production so poor. I don't see what you see in
Greene at all and I do not see him as even close to the caliber of TJ over
his career. Washington got hurt....we don't know what he would have been if
he had stayed a Jet...my point is to replace him with equal or better...do
you think LT plays beyond this year? They have problems with talent
evaluation...OMHO.

Jones did nothing until his 5th year & 3rd team so yes I would agree
with you that systems, teams, etc. are huge factors. LT replaced
Jones he may or may not out last Jones. I thin the plan is for
McKnight or next year's rookie to work out.Greene & McKnight replaced
Washington. I think we did OK there especially based on the risk
factor with Leon's injury. I also have a gut feeling, which means
nothing, that Rex only wants guys around who want to be around.

As for Greene I think he is good but with flaws. I always look at
Kevin Faulk as a guy who figured it out after several years especially
in regards to picking up the blitz.
