Why does Rex like this guy so much? There are quotes from Rex in
Baltimore gushing about his Pro Day. Good cover guy but soft. Ask
Shonn Greene.
Cromartie didn't fit in a zone. Prefers man. So does Rex. :)
Opposite Revis, he could get a lot of INTs.
PFT:
"To me, I felt like we played too much zone," Cromartie said. "As we
would say, we felt like we had two of the best corners in the NFL, me
and Jammer, and we played too much zone coverage, rather than man
[coverage]."
Miller then asked whether Cromartie is hoping to play in a 3-4 defense
that uses press-man coverage.
"I'd just like to play in a defense that's aggressive, period, to the
point of, let us use our strengths and use our abilities," Cromartie
said. "Ever since I came out, my first two years it was like that. We
had Coach [Wade] Phillips and Coach [Ted] Cottrell [as defensive
coordinators]. My second year, the 2007 and 2006 seasons, that's
exactly how we played. We may have played a cover-4 defense but there
was a lot of press-man that depended on us. We let the front seven do
their thing and we tried to handle everything in the back end."
Rivals.com 2006 scouting report on Cromartie:
Pros:
Cromartie declared for the NFL Draft after missing the 2005 season
following knee surgery. He has the combination of size, speed,
quickness, agility and instincts only the highest blue-chip
cornerbacks possess. He has rare movement skills for a 6-foot-2
athlete and performs positional skills that only 180-pound athletes
can accomplish. He has the hip flexibility and footwork of a much
smaller athlete with the height and reach to matchup with any receiver
in the game. He is the best college corner over the past two decades.
In his back pedal, he is smooth, fluid and is able to break quickly on
the ball. He has exceptional ball skills and competes for the pass on
every attempt. He shows good recognition of plays with the rare
closing burst to make up for mistakes and incredible top-drawer ball
skills. His workouts at both the NFL Combine and Florida State pro day
indicate his knee problems are behind him. His decision to declare for
the draft came as a surprise, but his postseason performance has
opened eyes to his athletic skills.
Cons:
He missed the entire 2005 season with a knee injury sustained in July
2005. His bizarre college career includes only one start. In zone
coverage, he is raw in many respects and needs development. He is not
alert and instinctive to recognize routes and his decision-making is
not as developed as necessary. As a tackler, he is not really
physical.
Numbers:
At the Combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds, with a 38”
vertical jump and an 11’ broad jump. His 10-yard split was 1.53
seconds, one of the best at the event. At Florida State’s pro day, he
ran the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds with a time of 3.89 seconds in
the short shuttle and a time of 7.02 seconds in the three-cone drill.
He also had a 42” vertical jump and did 18 reps of the 225-pound bench
press. His overall stats in 2004 include four interceptions and two
touchdowns on an interception and fumble recovery.
Thanks man, I feel better about this now.
LOL about Leonhard.
i think this is a great move... with the rex system, no bother so much
about cromartie not being a big hitting cb. no bother about him not
being a good zone guy. he's perfect for what the rex system needs. a
cb that can press and play man perfectly during those over load
blitzes. now we have our second "IDEAL" cover cb and are free to
address the d-line in the draft. aweseome, AWESOME move. the jets
defense.. the REX defense badly needed that second cover corner. i
feel a lot better now
If he doesn't spend the entire season injured like Strickland & Shepard.
@ Michael. Exactly. Great post.
you just stepped on my dick
I am Irish I anticipate the worst to avoid disappointment.
:)
I thought about that the other day. Would the defense have stepped up
sooner if we had a reliable corner at the other spot? Shepard &
Strickland both pulled & bruised their quad. There seems to be a rash
of these in not only football but baseball. Is it the focus on core
muscle fitness?
the more I think abouot this, the more I agree with you. A
conditional 2011 is a great deal for us too.
**** Post of the year :-)
Just glad to see him out of the AFCW!
MartyB in KC
dunno about the training aspects of it. would not surprise me
though... i cant for the life of me remember if lito and strickland
wore thigh pads... i been seing more and more nfl players going
without thigh pads. if also in baseball, i guess it makes sense to
see a connection with current trends in training. worth a closer look
to say the least...
So we possibly rent a CB for a year again? This time for a 3rd & maybe
a 2nd?
How is that good?
Because if Cromartie plays to form in man coverage, in which he has
excelled, he will get a long term deal with the Jets. Cromartie was a
disappointment in zone. San Diego took the round peg that they had
drafted and fiot so well and tried to make him fit the square hole the
past two years.
On ESPN today, Teddy Bruschi said that the Jets acquisition of
Cromartie has been the best off season move by *any* team in the
NFL.
Tanny done good here.
