"The world's biodiversity is down 30 percent since the 1970s,
according to a new report, with tropical species taking the biggest
hit. And if humanity continues as it has been, the picture could get
bleaker.

Humanity is outstripping the Earth's resources by 50 percent —
essentially using the resources of one and a half Earths every year"

************************************************************************************************************

OK... The largest extinction event we have had on the planet was the
Permian-Triassic event. Also referred to as "The Great Dying". About
96 % of the living things in the water and 70 % of the living things
on the land crapped out. The cause is still debated, but the probable
cause was volcanism in the Siberian Traps. That lead to higher water
temps and release of methane hydrates into the sea. Going by current
geological evidence, the event took at least a few millennia.

Now check this out... In only about 40 years 1/3 of the living things
are on the verge of being wiped out due to man made influences.

That is serious shit.

Damn glad I got football to think about as we all ride the planet on a
greased rail to hell.

dunno if you are poo poo'ing that story or being serious about the
mayan long count reference... at any rate... the speed of the current
mass extinction event that is under way is nutz. the cause is even
more so. i got my head up my ass with every day life like the rest of
the world, but i cant help but realize that our wonderful species has
gotten out of hand. we deserve what we get... and it is coming...
soon.

I had this discussion quite seriously last week with a guy I have dealing
with on a regular basis. He told me I was nuts, reactionary and reading too
much "Obama bullshit"....after I presented some facts he informed me I did
not love America, we could solve all of our energy problems if we'd just
open up everything here and drill and only Muslim loving fags are putting
out this crap about global warming etc. So...I smiled, made some decisions
and will not be dealing with him anymore. But....he's entitled to his
opinion. I think we have a serious crisis on our hands.

serious crisis is an understatement... the writing is on the wall. we
set fire to our own house long ago and now the flames have reached the
foundation. burning fossil fuels is just a small portion of the
offense. population forcast is also a problem given the water table.
we'll have water problems long before we run out of hydrocarbons.
desalinzation is an option, but you need a lot of energy to run fresh
water condensers. where do you get the energy to run desalinization
plants ??? we'll probably still be hooked on hydrocarbons when
desalinizatio becomes a matter of life and death for whole
populations.

John... Look beyond this little keyhole... 1/3" of all living species
are under great pressure. Since the trend of humans usurping more land
and resources is going to continue accelerate, the writing is on the
wall for the approx 1/3" of all living things currently under pressure
to survive. It is not tree hugging bull shit. We are in the middle of
a mass extinction event; the Holocene extinction. I have heard the
last 40 years referred to as the "Holocene Extinction Acceleration"
given the tremendous rate of the event's very recent progress due to
man's influence. So, you are correct... This article does not point
directly to 1/3 of the species being wiped out. It points to the fact
that the rate of consumption and the rate of acceleration of
consumption of land and resources all but guarantees we'll finish off
about 1/3 of the species in a startlingly short amount of time. Only
a political minded fool would turn his back on the facts.

yep... the water table is the real issue... at the current rate of
population growth, they'll be big problems in a generation's time.
that brings us back to energy sources... desalination would of course
solve the expected fresh water issues... what will you use to power
desalination plants ??? that is the key... if you burn fossil fuels to
desalinize sea water in the volume that will be needed in 50 to 100
years, you can kiss the planet goodbye. clean renewable energy is
also the key to water supply

I agree about the water. Many people draw parallels between Austin, TX & CA. There are many: high tech, pretty scenery, hippies :)

The one not mentioned enough is there is not enough water to sustain the population growth. Sam Kennison used to have that horrible line about Ethiopians in the desert. He should be screaming at CA & other parts of the SW.

Welcome back, from one of those high desert hippies, you knee jerk,
right wing cretin. The issue of water and its increasing scarcity is
one that has no politics to it. It IS DEFINITELY tied to its control
and MONEY, as in who controls the source makes the money. And out here
there is the added issue that the ground water is becoming increasingly
polluted by corporations using the state's water ways as dumping
grounds, such as the Sacramento River, which feeds to state's southern
aquifers. See, it all comes down to the corporate state that justifies
its unconscionably doing what ever the hell they want to for the sake of
the bottom line.

John...

The long term effects of the gulf spill have yet to be determined.
You know full well there is still quite a bit being written about
this. I don't know if you remember all of my posts on the gulf spill,
but the crux of it centered around the wanton cover up by BP and their
partners in the federal government and mass media. We went from "no
spill at all", to something quite different. Their tune changed when
BP realized they had no chance to sweep 62m barrels per day under the
carpet.

This is not good old fashioned plum squeezing on my part, but I find
it shocking that you are not horrified that 1/3 of the species on this
planet have been put under life and death pressure in a shockingly
short amount of time. If trends continue, 1/3 of all the living
species on this planet will die off. What else is there left for the
world to have nightmares about ???

I THINK I translated this...not sure. Oh no, there is never any hypocrisy
in any of the main stream politics. I actually remember the GOP passing a
vote at their last convention banning any hypocrisy. If they have a trust
fund (which very few people do in that life style) they are not hippies,
they are fakes. To do anything and be legitimate it requires some actual
sacrifice of self. So, while I may not agree with someone's position on
something I will respect them if they are willing to pay the price by their
actions instead of just spouting off words. That's where the relationship
to sports comes in...you have to actually do it and not just talk about it.

Papa, you read things in to my always rushed posts that I don't where you come up with that was written as almost all my posts are with no malice & no politics.

I am taking a shot at you now. You always claim the righties have no sense of humor. You are half right but extremist to me generally have no sense of humor. That was a FUCKING joke. You missed it like often do & go rightie leftie. It was written knowing you & Johnny were reading. It wasn't right or left it was written with the knowledge that you & johnny were reading & no offense was meant. When an Italian guy gets it I know that it was obviously was easy to pick up. Oblique is not my style unless I am answering an idiot which I don't group you in.

So you know there is a part of Austin that revels in the "hippie" culture. Hell, they have bumper stickers saying Keep Austin Weird. I love that stuff. Some of those wierdos are businessmen, teachers, etc. & plenty are my friends.

As for the trust fund you again miss what to me is obvious. Hippies don't have trust funds rich people do. "Hippies" w/ no purpose are no different than trust fund babies (Woody Johnson). I said have a purpose. If you protest & are sacrificing & not taking $ for doing so you have a purpose.

Sorry but you do that too often. Have good night.

Read what I wrote. The power producers & traders followed the law but it was horribly unethical. Gray & the CA House should have changed it which would have blown up their scheme. Remember Gray saying "Duh?" The price of power could not be raised by law so consumers did not stop using power.

And did you vote for Anderson in '80? I did. Actually, I've been on a
losing side in every Presidential election since '64 (mt first vote).
Guess I really know how to pick 'em.

I like it but think about this; 99.9% of all the secies to have ever
lived on the planet is already extinct. It's natural for us to
eventually follow the rest. This is how we roll.... Live Long And Prosper.

Guess again, Mr. Darwin...

As I pointed out before... The most significant extenction event the
planet has ever gone through was the Permian-Triassic event known as
"The Great Dying". 96 % of the living things in the water crapped out
and 70 % to 80 % of the living thigs on land crapped out.

That little event took at the very least 10,000 years to occur. It
may have taken as long as 60,000 years. During that time alone, the
process of evolution was able to "set the table" for a recovery as a
result of postitive mutations and natural adaptation.

The current mass extinction event has taken about 60 years to progress
to the point that at least 30 % of all living things are in imanent
jeapordy of dying off. If current man made trends dont change (and
they wont), in another 40 to 60 years, 30 % or more of the living
things on the planet are going to be "Casper"... as in the friendly
ghost.

Understand ???

If you dont understand what that means... Let me explain...

It means *NO RECOVERY THIS TIME" so long as humans continue to infest
the planet. And I do me *INFEST*

They only place we'll see bears and big cats is on the side of
football helmets.

Who invited you? ;)

That'd be great! Just do it. What a hoot it'd be. Maybe we can even
coax Michael out of the house, if he hasn't smashed his head into too
many wall by then.

That will be for another world. 2012 will change all of that, Michael,
and, form clues you've dropped along the years, they read to me that you
know it.

When I made my career change one of the jobs I got was with a Crisis

many nice houses (from the outside) have holes in the walls all over the
place. I suggested to a father once to just move to a place that had
cinderblock walls, the kid was a spoiled brat, let him break his hands a few
times.

lets hope so... i get the feeling we are on the cusp of a paradigm
change. so do a lot of people... but that is not gifted insight. it
is a product of wishful thinking for those that realize the
circumstances and more importantly, what caused them. 2013 will come
along and it will sill be shit. no paradigm change. no new
enlightenment. no catharsis.

That will certainly hold true for you, *IF* you hold that belief to your
heart. Step up to the shift and embrace it. It's either that or
continue to slam your helmet-less head into walls, brick ones at that,
as Papa suggests.

Cinderblock...slight chance you make it there. :-)
We are at a "millennium movement" or millennium change....or as Michael says
a paradigm shift....it will not continue to work the way it has been, and
some are far too slow at recognizing this. OMHO

easy to vote 3rd party in a state where the GOP is safe. It is similar to voting 345d party in CA if you are Democrat although this year does Romney grab any LDS voters (Islanders) that may have not voted or been GOP.
