I read today in the sporting news artical by rich
cimini that the jets are interested in dt jamal williams from oklahoma
state. He is projected as a 1st or 2rd round player. My queston is how
does the supplemental draft work and how woud the jets be able to get
the guy?

TARR NYC

He would have to slip all the way to the second round because the Jets have no
first round choice next year. If he happens to slip to the 2nd round the Jets
could pick him but they would not be able to pick till the 3 round next year
because NE has our first rounder next year. Rob Moore was a supplemental pick
in 1990 and that is why we pick Browning Nagle in the 2nd round.

In the supplemental draft players are available to be picked who were not
declared eligible in time for the draft. Teams can draft players in the
supplemental draft but relinquish their pick (in whatever round the player
was taken) in the following draft. If teams do not select any players their
draft for the following season is not effected.

In the case of Jamal Williams he is projected to go in the late first round.
If he were to slip to the point the Jets pick in the second round then the
Jets could draft him (giving up their 2nd round pick next season). Parcells
has stated he is hesitant to do this as it would leave him with no picks in
the first 2 rounds next season.

Rob Moore turned out to be a good player, but that was the worst move in
franchise history. Ron Wolf and Dick Haley had projected Brett Favre as
the best player in the entire draft coming out of college. Without a
first round pick they lost him. Favre was picked in the second round and
had the Jets not drafted Moore in the supplementary draft Brett Favre,
not Browning Nagle would have been the QB of the future that year.

Now that hurts. Just knowing we had the chance to get farve and didnt .
How can we have made the same mistake twice. I know we also had the
chance to take marino and didnt.
Hopefully bp has enough foresight not to make the same mistake again. As
for farve who knew.

No offense, but I don't understand why everybody keeps bringing these
things up. Every other team (except for the Dolphins) also passed on
Marino. Also, every other NFL team passed on Brett Favre - and some teams
did so twice. It's not like the the Portland Trailblazers who passed up on
Michael Jordan to pick Sam Bowie. I wonder if fans of other teams lament
about not picking up Marino / Favre.

What is so painful is that the Jets didn't pass on Favre at all. Not
having a number one pick that year is the reason they couldn't select
him. If they had a number one pick he would have been a Jet, since he
was Wolf's highest rated player and everyone else passed on him in round
one.

Wasn't Favre taken exactly one pick before the Jets took Nagle in the 2d round?

Yes he was, it was that close. Ron Wolf would have taken him with the
Jets first round pick if they had one. INterestingly, Atlanta didn't
play him at all and then Ron Wolf left the Jets to take the GM job at
Green Bay. His first move was to give up the Packers number one pick
that year for Favre, a move that caused Packer fans to hang Ron Wolf in
effigy, how could this new GM give up a low number one pick for a
backuop QB that couldn't play even for the Falcons? It still hurts when
I think about it.

The majority of teams passed on Marino and on Favre. Goes to show you how
inexact the 'science' of drafting is. That's why all this arguing over draft
picks is just so we football fans have something to debate about in the
off-season. It's fun for a while but after months of it you'll have to admit
it does gets dull. It'll be more fun to talk about rookies once pre-season
starts.

But Bob, just playing the devils advocate here for a moment. Ole Petey would

demanding a trade.

Even more moot Rick, his coach would have been Bruce Coslet, who might
still be the coach today if he hadn't fallen in love with Browning
Nagle. Not only did the Jets lose Favre, but when Nagle was promoted
over Boomer to starting QB, do you know who the 3rd string QB was? Jeff
Blake who went to the Pro Bowl two years later when he signed with the
Bengals after being cut by Pete Carroll when he became the Jets head
coach.

Jeff Blake is kinda like Vinny, had 1 good year. Got replaced by an ageing

John, as far as Favre, I don't think one can lament not picking him. But,
as far as Marino, even the draftnicks who attended that draft were chanting
Marino's name. O'Brien was picked, with Marino going in the next pick
(even the draftnicks knew that this was the spot in the draft that Marino
should go.) Even though 29 teams passed on Marino, the Jets passed on him
in a spot that he should have gone, while picking a player that plays his
position. That's why it's always brought up, as it should. This franchise
has made too many 1st round mistakes, and this one is the crown jewel of
examples.

If Vinny has had only one good year, that means Drew has had only one good

However, it wasn't like the Steelers who picked Todd Blackledge. Yeah, the
Jets screwed up, and maybe they "screwed up more" than other teams because
they had a lower pick, but I wouldn't consider it the crown jewel.
Alright, Marino turned out to be great, but I also think that O'Brien
turned out to be a good NFL QB. I would classify the biggest bust being
the Blair Thomas pick. He was a #2 selection and the Jets got nothing from
him. Granted - at the time there was no reason to think he wouldn't be
good. Hindsight is always 20-20. I know I'm nitpicking, but I get more
upset when you have a very high draft pick and get nothing from him than
getting fairly good value from a lower pick (I would classify OB as a
fairly good value - others may disagree) and passing on somebody who gets
picked later and turns out to be Hall-of-Fame material.

The selection of Lam Jones has to rate as one of the all-time high 1st round
busts for the Jets as well. I believe he was the 2nd overall pick in a draft
just like Blair Thomas. Dishonorable mention award should go to Dave Cadigan.
Oh yeah, there was Roger Vick too. Also, there was a year when the Jets had
two #1's. One of the picks was a guy named Ron Faraut (aka Ross Perot?) who
was so bad that he was actually cut during pre-season! No, the Jets drafting
history is nothing to be proud of. Sure other teams have their first round
busts too, but the Jets seem to have had way more than their fair share. (This
dubious drafting history makes the Curtis Martin deal seem all the more safe.)

Your right on all accounts. The Lam Jones pick is classic example of
picking someone on potential rather than seeing if the guy is a football
player or not. Although, I think he was the #3 pick (I could be wrong).
The fact that the Jets have had so many first round busts which contributed
nothing has hurt the team much more than the Jets picking OB rather than
Marino.

IMO, it's time for people to stop complaining about not getting Marino. That
was a long time ago. It has nothing to do with anybody's current management.
Besides, as you pointed out, everybody who had a first round pick passed on
Marino. Since I live near Pittsburgh, I root for Pitt, Penn State and the
Steelers. As a Pitt fan, I was sure everybody made a mistake with Marino. As
a Steeler fan, I was disappointed we didn't draft him. We drafted a DL named
Gabe Ravera (sp?) instead. Ever hear of him? Probably not. He looked awesome
in the pre season but then wrecked his car. The accident broke his neck and
paralyzed him. Guess what. for the next 10 years all we heard about was that
we could have had Marino, but instead, we got a guy who can't even walk. Sound
fair to you? The point is, everybody screwed up by not taking Marino. It's
time to let it go.

As for Favre, I keep reading in here that he went in the second just 1 pick
before the Jets drafted. It's also been stated in here that the Jets had him
rated as the best prospect in the draft. Question: Why not trade up if he was
that good? Someone said that they tried to jump up 2 spots, but the other team
pulled out of the deal. O.K., but it still seems like poor management to wait
that long. We did the same thing in the 3rd this year. We waited for Little
to fall into our laps, but your Jets traded with the Rams and Little went 1
spot ahead of the Steelers. Our organization has a current rep of doing well
in the draft, but we sure blew that one. I'm still crying.

Any way, from an older Steeler fan to the Jets fans: I know what it's like to
endure the bad times, so good luck.

I think you're wrong Jets Lets' go to the Numbers!

Vinny the last 4 seasons 1044 Com 1787 Att 12606 Yds 84 Td 62 INT
That works out to a QB rating of 76.3

Bledsoe the past 4 years 1410 Com 2472 Att 15854 Yds 93 td 73 int
That works out to a 76.6 QB rating

So Bledsoe has a better QB Rating, so stop saying Vinny has a hell of lot
better QB rating than Bledsoe.

You are right about Blair Thomas, but to be fair, even Jimmy Johnson
said he would have picked Thomas in that spot.In that draft, there were
a couple of running backs selected after Blair who turned out OK,
including Emitt Smith who JJ did take some 15 picks later. Thomas did
have a serious knee injury in his junior year but it was supposed to
have healed as a senior. Beware of running backs that high with a
history of serious injury.

Marino was rumored to be on drugs in college. There is a difference between fact
and rumor. However, that was the suspected reason why Marino slid to the second.
He was also rated below the other QB's, so I'm not sure the drug rumor really had
any bearing. How many people have you ever heard of who could kick a cocaine
habit like that? He didn't even go into rehab.

At the time of the Rob Moore pick, no one knew anything about Brett Favre.
Remember, the supplemental draft we picked Moore in was a year before the
entry draft that Favre was picked up by Atlanta. They are the team that
should be crucified. They chose guys like Billy Joe Tolliver and the lot
and traded away Favre to Green Bay.

Hinsight is 20/20. What if we dont pick Wilkes in the supplemental draft
and he goes on to become the next Reggie White? Then do you once again
crucify Parcells for making the wrong choice?

It's easy to say hinsight is 20/20 but in this day and age organizations
spend alot of time and money in evaluating players . There are players
were it is obvious they posses the physical and mental atributes to
become successful nfl players . Such was the case with rob moore.
But as for brett farve i think he was a victim of small school syndrom .
In college brett was a tremendous play maker . And because he came from
a small school needed more time to develope . But wasnt given the
opertunity. So i agree atlanta blew it by not giving him enough time .
My point is with all this talk about wanting to buy the groceries bp
damn well better make the right choice . Because if this guy williams
does turn out to be the next reggie white and the jets have a chance to
get him and dont does that make bp any better at buying groceries than
say robert kraft.

Ickybaluky

More than a small school syndrome, there were other factors causing Favre to
slip. He had suffered a serious injury and missed part of his senior year.
He also had a reputation as a party guy and part of the reason Atlanta got
rid of him was he had poor practice habits and was frequently late for
meetings. Favre is the perfect example of a guy with talent who needed to
mature (Cris Carter as well). Atlanta at the time thought they had their QB
in Chris Miller (a good QB who had his career cut short by concussions) so
they traded Favre because of his immaturity. While I understand this was a
horrible trade, it isn't as bad if you understand the circumstances at the
time. The trade was lucky for Favre as well because he was put in a
situation where he could play and develop under two of the better offensive
minds in the game (Fritz Shurmur and Mike Holmgren) -> as opposed to Atlanta
where he would have to play in a stats friendly run in shoot which left QBs
exposed to injury.

Also, while Jamal Williams is a good player, he hasn't proved he is the next
Reggie White. While he is generally considered the jewel of the
supplemental draft, he probably would have been a late first-rounder at best
in the regular draft (this year). Also, he is also young and needs to
mature, so he probably wouldn't have instant impact.

I just gotta ask this question!!

Why do the Pats fans HATE CM so much, considering he was there best
running back they've had in ages?

Look at stats, ask experts, ask even fans who don't have special interests
in the argument (namely jets-pats fans). They'll all tell you that CM is
a great RB who has planty of years left, and was a great pickup for the
Jets. Even with the huge contract he got, the Jets have alot more to
spend, so the money becomes irrelevant.

the only people who'll talk trash about CM are Pats fans. Its funny how
quickly they turn. Same goes for Parcells. He ecame in a VERY close
second for coach of the year (to Dungy, probably because he didn't make
the PO). But according to Pats, he's the worst coach in the league. Even
though he created the team that gave the Pats their best chance atsome
rings.

You don't see Jets fans talking trash about Murrell, or Graham. NOD yes,
but that's a different story :) I think Murrell and Graham didn't fit

I never 'bashed any of those players. I simply reported what had been
said about them by the Jets to give perspective, not the type of CM
kraft-Grier propaganda.
1. Murrell just couldn't deliver. He gained less than 500 yards over the
last ten games of the year.
2. Hugh Douglass had just 4 sacks and no production on stopping the run.
3. Jeff Graham. Also disappeared over the last half of the year. No TD's
after the season opener.

How is that ripping or insulting a player. I hope that they all do well,
especuially since they are all in the NFC East which won't bother the
Jets at all. Parcells told all the players that they would be evaluated
at the end of the year, and none of the players lost contributed anythin
over the last half of the year, which is exactly why they were let go
and why the Jets got draft picks for them.

I can agree with you with Graham, he dropped too many balls and was too
inconsistent to warrant keeping at his salary.

>1. Murrell just couldn't deliver. He gained less than 500 yards over the

While I think Murrell is a good back, and could see him prospering in the
right situation, I understand why the Jets got rid of him. Martin is an
upgrade, and acquiring him made Murrell expendable.

>2. Hugh Douglass had just 4 sacks and no production on stopping the run.

This one I have to disagree with you about. He may have only had 4 sacks
last season, but he had 18 sacks in the two prior years to give him 22 sacks
in 28 career starts. That is pretty good. For a team that had trouble
rushing the passer it is odd to give this guy up. He could have been for
the Jets what Charles Haley was for the Cowboys, Fred Dean for the 49ers or
Richard Dent was for the Bears. He has comparable ability with all those
guys. I understand he may not have fit Parcells defensive scheme, but then
they should have waited until the draft to trade him. You can get more than
a #2 for a guy with Douglas' ability, that type of player is rare.

I know you will probably argue that the Jets have several younger players
(Boose, Ogbogu) which they like who need to get playing time. Still, DL
take time to develop, so it is asking a lot for these guys to come in and
make an instant impact. I think the Douglas trade is the one you might end
up looking back at regretfully.

>I never 'bashed any of those players. I simply reported what had been

I got a chuckle out of this. When the Jets say something it is perspective.
When the Pats say something it is propaganda.

First of all, I am a Pats fan and love the guy. I would never say anything
bad about him.

Second of all, several Jets fans are belittling Hugh Douglas' ability, so it
happens both ways.

Finally, I agree there is too much of these back and forth attacks between
newsgroups. But it happens both ways. I love talking football and love the
game. If Bob Jensen's versions of things happen (the Pats fall on their
face while the Jets take off), I am not going to jump off a bridge. Being a
Pats fan means knowing what it is like for your team to be down (I am sure
Jets fans can relate).

One thing that does bother me is that Jets fans seem to love to point to
every little thing to show how the Pats are headed in the toilet. I am a
Parcells fan, but he does on occasion make mistakes. Why can't the Pats
make mistakes and still recover? It is particularly annoying to constantly
hear the Pats draft was the worst in NFL history. I just wish the playes
could play before such judgements are made. Perhaps I am a homer, but I see
a lot of good things the Pats do as well as mistakes they might make. They
have done a good job of adding talent to this team and resigning key players
(with the exception of Martin). Nobody is perfect, but I think the Pats are
pretty well off even without the Tuna.

I just want to talk football. Jets, Pats, Saints, Bears --> I don't care.
I love the game.

No one hates CM, and you are correct, he was one of if not the best back the
Pats have ever had. I haven't noticed you in the Pats NG, so maybe you don't
understand what Bob Jensen and a few of his legion have done in it. It seems

Actually, I haven't been on this newsgroup in quite a while. As for
people, specifically Jensen, bashing former Jets players, I don't know
what to say. Murrell gave us some flashed of greatness last season, and
played a big part in the turn around from 1-15 to 9-7. Graham was an
average but consistant performer. Douglas struggled last year, but before
the change to 3-4 (I want to clarify this: I am not saying that he would
have played any better or worse had they stayed in the 4-3) he was one of
the top defensive players on the squad. Salary problems, an over stocked
WR corp coupled with the addition of CM, forced all the changes to happen.
I said before, I'll still watch these guys play. Murrell might be a big
surprise in Arizona!! In philly, where Douglas and Graham went, they need
all the help they can get at those positions. Should be fun to watch!!

As fpr NOD: never liked him, never threw more than an 8 yard pass ever
with Pittsburg, showed he'd choke in the big game, and Jet's in there
brilliant "let's buy the whole NFL" offseasona few years ago give him $25
million. I was so pissed!! I knew that the team would never break four
wins without a MAJOR change after that move. That change came with
Parcells, and the NOD legacy is now over (THANK F___IN' GOD!!).

The worst things fans do, not Just us crazy Jets and Pats fans, is to bash
players when they leave a team and come back to town to play. Could you
imagine playing a ton of years for one team, get traded, then come back in
a new uniform and get BOOED? Sucks, man! It also serves to really piss
off a player into playing their guts out to beat the former team. It just
shows you how harsh people are towards our sports atheletes. They deserve
to get paid what they do.

Icky, you seem to be a fairly objective poster, so let me ask you a couple
of questions regarding Hugh Douglass. As much as the Jets would have liked
to keep Hugh Douglas, do you think he was a player who warranted 5 mil per
year? Hugh was going to be a FA after this year and was asking for
Stubblefield type money Do you think his demands were reasonable and that
the Jets should have paid it?

I think all Jets fans would have liked to see Hugh remain a Jet, but, I
think he essentially traded himself out of New York.

Whether or not it was warranted, he would have received it. He is 25 years
old and can get to the QB. People his size who can do that are rare. Look
at the money Bryce Paup received and he is older than dirt. Look at the
insane contract the 49ers gave Gabe Wilkins and he is hurt. Look at the
absolutely insane amount of money the Vikings had to give to John Randle.
Joe Johnson is being offered over $4 mil from the Saints and he is turning
it down. Look at what McGinest received and his career numbers are very
similar to Douglas. If guys like him grew on trees then Chris Doleman and
Kevin Greene wouldn't be playing any more. Douglas is a heck of a talent
and compares favorably with most of these guys.

Whether the Jets should have kept him or not is debatable. They had him for
one more season and could have slapped the franchise tag on him to keep him
another season. Parcells has been hesitant to franchise guys in the past
and he probably wouldn't have been happy about it. I have no trouble with
Parcells getting rid of the guy. One of Parcells strengths is he goes and
gets "his" kind of players (which means they work hard and are coachable).
Parcells knows better than I do whether Douglas fit in or not. However, I
think they should have received more than a second round pick for the guy.
I they had waited until closer to the draft might have been able to get a
first or additional picks in this or future drafts. It seems they pulled
the trigger too early. Philly must have thought very highly of him in order
to give him all that money, right?

In a couple of years it may not matter if some of the Jets young DL develop,
but for this coming season you can't tell me you won't miss this guy.

>Icky, you seem to be a fairly objective poster, so let me ask you a couple
>of questions regarding Hugh Douglass.

Let me ask you a question. One of the troubles when following your own team
is that it is difficult to see things clearly. It is hard to be objective
about any player on your own team, everybody has favorites. On the Pats
some of my favorite players are Ted Johnson, McGinest, Slade, Terry Glenn,
Ty Law and Ben Coates (Curtis Martin was one). When I look at that bunch I
see them all as having Pro Bowl capability, guys with huge upside who are
among the best at their position. Normally it is easier for me to look with
a critical eye at other teams, for there isn't the emotional attachment.
The one team that I can't do that with is the Miami Dolphins.

My question is this: How good are the Dolphins?

While I am a great admirer of Marino, he is on the downside of his career.
He has carried this team on his back the last few years, but it seems he is
less capable of doing so.

Beyond him I see Tim Bowens as being a top guy at his position but little
else. They have a lot of good players like Zack Thomas and O.J. McDuffie,
but neither of those guys are great. Troy Drayton has top-notch ability but
seems to spend more time complaining about not seeing the ball than catching
it (he is no Coates). Where are all the playmakers? Name me a Dolphin
Pro-Bowler. Who the hell on this team will be a sought-after free agent
anytime soon?

Now I freely admit to being a Dolphin-hater my entire life, so I know I am
not the most unbiased person (which is why I ask this question). I readily
admit that Jimmy Johnson can coach, the Dolphins play hard and are very
fundamentally sound. I am sure I will hear all about the young players they
have and the improved running game. But other than Donnelly, where is the
offensive line upgraded? Unless Lawrence Phillips comes through (a big if)
they don't have a premier back. How are they going to run the ball? In
addition they are still very weak at WR. Defensively they are very quick
but undersized. The don't have a great secondary or a premier pass rusher.
They have some quick linebackers but no one great. I just don't see it.

Of Johnson's draft picks there are several who have made some impact, but
none of these players look like world-beaters. The Dolphins first round
picks (Daryl Gardner and Yatil Green) have yet to make a impact. They
traded out of the round this year. I think Johnson is getting too caught up
in trying to be a draft genius. Maybe after I see some of these players
play I will think differently, but for now I can't see Miami being any
better than last season. I think they have a fairly soft schedule (they
play the Pats on 11/23 in NE but after that do not have to go to a cold
weather locale and they play the NFC West without facing SF), so they may go
9-7 or 10-6, but they will not be a serious contender for anything. I could
also see them going 7-9 or 8-8.

I read in a Sporting News article right around the time of the Douglas
trade that there was alittle finger pointing going on between Douglas and
the Linbackers converning tying up blockers and making tackles. If this
was true, and I'm not saying it is, and Parcell's knew about it, that
might have also contributed to his departure (on top of everything else
wev'e been talking about). Last thing the Jets want is to become a team
like the "Bickering Bills". Remember the tension between KJ and WC when
he published the book "Just throw me the damn ball". That type of crap is
a distraction and I think Parcells would be right on top of it if it
occurred.

Agreed, but sometimes a player is good enough to put up with it. Charles
Haley was a Irritable son-of-a-bitch who got on his teammates nerves in both
SF and Dallas. He also has 5 rings. Of course, Douglas is not Charles
Haley.

Parcells has always understood the importance of character in his players.
While he did put up with a lot of off-field crap with LT, but since then he
has shown he would prefer to bring in players who are not thugs. He did
this with the Pats and has continued this trend with the Jets (Mawae and
Martin are examples).

I think if you examined the bulk of the Pats fan's posts regarding CM this
is what they say. I love CM, the guy was a steal in the third round. He is
a solid citizen and one of the major reasons why the Pats have had success
over the last few years. He is however, not the perfect running back, he
has trouble in short yardage situations because of his size, and last year
he had a major injury which required significant surgery. Those two things
aside, the Jets got themselves probably the third best back in the AFC,
behind Davis and Bettis (he may be debatable). I will not reiterate the
Jensen spew that we had to put up with for the last couple of monthes
regarding this.

On a side note, I always was impressed with Murrell. I thought he was one
of the most under-appreciated backs in football. He rushed for over 1000
yards on a team that needed to completely retool its offensive line in the
off-season to focus on run-blocking. One of the points brought up was, with
the new offensive line and change in philosophy, could AM have rushed for
1300 or 1350 yards and if so and if CM rushes for 1500 yards next year, was
his signing in RFA really worth all of the money and pics? There are two big
ifs in the question, but I think that it is a legitimate question. As a
pats fan, I was hoping the Jets would release AM and the Pats would get him
as a FA. That would have been fun.

Douglas was no more than a situational pass rusher, an extremely good one at
times. His major drawback was that run blockers blew right passed him forcing the
linebackers and, worse, secondary to make more tackles than you want on running
plays. I guess Bill wants an everydown all-purpose DE. If the Screaming Eagles
use him right we'll be able to hear Huuuuuugh all the way up I-95 from the Vet.
If I were Kanel, I'd watch my ass.

Eddie Geaorge is also better than Martin IMO. People never mention this guy
when discussing the top RBs. Just look at his numbers the past 2 years and then
take into consideration that he has an average O-line in front of him and
almost a zero passing game to help keep defenses honest. Of course, this will
be construed as sour grapes by all you Tuna-toadies.

$1.9M I believe. I think he had 2 years left at $1.9M/per at the time of

I am a huge Eddie George Fan, and would agree he is the complete package.
So Curtis drops to number 4, still a pretty nice pick up. I still stand by
the statement that he is not a complete package because he trouble getting
the tough yard.

NFC West - could go 3-1, maybe 2-2
AFC East - could go 4-4 or 5-3
2-2 against the other AFC teams.
Sounds like worst case 8-8; best case 10-6.
Potential playoff team; not a significant SB threat.

I can't see how the Miami dolphins will finish better than 8-8!

Get romped on by the Pats 0-2
At most, splt with Bills and Jets 2-2
Probably beat dolts twice 2-0
agree with AFC, although I don't have any idea who they play 2-2
NFC west? Here's where I beg to differ.
Again, don't know who they play, so go through all of them

SF loss
Carolina loss (addition of greene and the other returningLB beats Miamis
offense)
NO win
LA RAMs toss up
Atlants LOSS since NOD will be at the helm :)
that gives them 8-8 around, and that is being real optimistic.

Miami doesn't play San Francisco, therefore 9-7. They play all the other
