1) Speed - If a player lacks speed, he will always be limited when he
performs in the secondary. The faster the athlete, the more opportunity he
will have to excel. How much speed should secondary players possess? We
like our players to run somewhere between 4.65 and 4.7 in the 40 yard
dash.
2) Jumping ability - We would rather have a shorter player who can jump
than a taller player who has little or no spring in his legs. The question
is asked, how high should a player be able to jump? Two methods are used
to determine jumping ability.
First, we have a simple drill using the goal post on the practice field.
Each player jumps up and touches the crossbar both from a running and
standing position.
The second method used to determine jumping ability takes place during the
winter workout program. Each one of the secondary players takes a turn
trying to put a football through the basketball goal.
3) Reading the Ball - A third factor that is involved in our philosophy of
secondary coverage is reading the ball, which is recognizing when a pass
is occurring.
4) Attitude - If a man is to excel as a secondary player, he must possess
a keen competitive nature. He will face a player who knows what he is
going to do and still have confidence that he holds the edge when the ball
is thrown.
