I dont think the giants were going to drop his tender. If this is true
why?

We have a break in the stalemate between Victor Cruz and the New York
Giants.
ESPN's Josina Anderson reports that Cruz is heading to the Giants'
facility Friday morning with the intention of signing his first-round
restricted free-agent tender of $2.87 million.
"I'm going to sign my tender today and will continue talks for a
long-term deal before camp starts," Cruz reportedly told Anderson.
The Giants had the opportunity to reduce Cruz's tender to $594,000 if
he did not sign it by June 17. We imagine this was a motivating factor
for Cruz, who sat out all offseason activities while looking for a
long-term deal.
By signing his tender, Cruz contractually will be bound to attend
Giants training camp next month.

round pick?
I don't think that's going to happen considering the value of any team's
first round pick in a very narrow talent pool.

another team but the Giants have the right to match any offer he
receives in order to retain his services.

Nope ... that ship sailed quite some time ago ... He was Giants property now or sitting out ... He did tell his agent NOT to solicit offers to show his wanting to stay here ... His signing now allows him to take part in activities - which now are only having beer and pizza watching tape with Eli ... and he will start training camp under that contract ... It is a good starting point for a long term deal salary cap wise ... this money is already committed in the cap and they can spread the signing bonus out with the guaranteed money later ...

Didn't help his bargaining with the Giants except to show his good faith ... but the Giants do reward that when and as much as they can ...

Two scenarios - Cruz plays out the year under the tender - really pushing hard to show all he has for some other team next year... or Cruz signs a long term deal this year ... and he'll finish his career here ... both are gambles but acceptable to both sides ...

of the dice on his part. The Giants have no great incentive to offer
more money now. All the possibilities I can think of are.

helped this. Its not going to happen now unless he want to give some
back in fines.
Plays great this year and cashes in next year.

It seems silly to give up a what he was offered for a few dollars more
that the Giants might offer (relative of course) at this point so the
only thing I can think he is thinking is forget about the Giants long
term unless they pay my asking price this year or next. So I play for

Cruz has always been a mensch on this ... honored his contract last year ... doing the negotiations right ...

The Giants offer is not a lowball deal whatsoever ... it would make him the highest slot receiver in the league easily ... but he is more than a slot receiver ... playing the Z quite often ... So 2 Million over Welker <the Giants offer> is certainly fair ... but Cruz believes he's worth more .... Not Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald numbers but the next rung where many lesser talents are earning a million or two over the Giants offer ...
So we're looking at 8 million to 10 million and how much to guarantee over how long ... not impossible to negotiate ... Sure Cruz blew some negotiation chips by signing the tender ... but whether he signs for 8 or 10 his life changes greatly but about the same no matter what the final numbers are ...

he and his agent realize this is helped by being in the NY market.
Holding out longer could only antagonize him with the fan base, and
thereby reduce his potential outside income.
And there is also the example of Steve Smith. He had an over 100 catch
season playing that same position with the Giants. He did not sign a
lucrative long term contract. And we all know how that turned out.

Smith was the indeed poster child for the folly of squeezing the last drop possible out of a deal ... His situation was basically the same as Cruz ... a year for playing for peanuts ... an offer of set for life on the table ... but he was holding out for set for life plus $1.18 ... so he threw the dice ... got injured ... and the long term deal dissipated ...Even after that ... Had he taken the Giants up on the pay for rehab year ... I'd bet he'd still be playing ... Instead of retired due to seemingly irreversibly aggravating that injury ...

As I mentioned elsewhere ... The Giants' offer to Cruz is a life changer ... The incremental he's looking for won't change that new life much at all ...
He's not stupid (and Condon his agent actually is smart) ... So he'll sign long term when they see they've gotten as much as possible ...
