I know deaths related to football were somewhat common in the distant
past (one major attempt to remedy that fact was the introduction of the
foward pass), but does anyone know if any NFL player ever died from an
on-field injury?

<snip>
'Several N.F.L. players have died during or shortly after games.
Detroit Lions receiver Chuck Hughes died of a heart attack during a game
on Oct. 24, 1971. In 1963, Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Stone
Johnson died 10 days after he broke his neck in an exhibition game
against the Houston Oilers while blocking on a kickoff return.
In 1960, tackle Howard Glenn of the New York Titans, the forerunners of
the Jets, injured his neck on a play and died soon afterward.
Washington Redskins tackle Dave Sparks, in 1954, and Chicago Cardinals
tackle Stan Mauldin, in 1948, died of heart attacks after games. Two
college football players have died from neck-related injuries in the
past 15 years.

I don't count the heart attacks as injuries ... They're the result of
an illness
So that means 2 in the pros ... Stone Johnson and Howard Glenn ...
