CHIP KELLY!!!!!

He says it won't happen, but that's who he thinks fits them best.

The article is his article for today over at www.mmqb.si.com

I can't think of a worse fit. He would want total control, which they would never give him. And Eli is by no stretch a qb like Mariotta who can use his legs. And after a father figure like Coughlin, how would players react to a coach with zero human warmth?

I think the Giants will go after Bill Belichick. Don't ask me why...
just a funny feeling.

Welcome back, Hats. You had us worried.

Didn't think about the Deflator, don't know if he'd be available. If he comes here, I hope he brings his balls with him.

Thanks for your concern. I've been busy with life Fats and no time to
watch a bad football team, or much football at all for that matter.
Awhile back I was watching my "Giants 10 Greatest Games" DVD and it
made me realize just how much I loathe today's NFL overall.

Given how things played out, the debacle in Philly is largely Kelly's
fault. Management gave him a blank check, and he (and they) paid for
it.

Well truth be told I was of the subject some time ago. Long story
short, my wife had PRK laser surgery on her eyes. Now not being the
spring chicken that she used to be, she developed some nasty headaches
shortly thereafter. We went to see a top flight neuro at NYU Langone
and after the evaluation, I got to speaking with him and football came
up. The conversation went along the lines of him having a peer who was
doing studies for the league and found all kinds of results that were
not good for the NFL. Needless to say, when the NFL got the Dr.s
opinion, they defunded the study. The Dr.s impression was that the NFL
didn't really want to know about it.

Hats.....well, as you know, for decades there has been an ongoing debate among scholars as to whether Kotter himself was, in fact, a sweat hog. As matter of fact this is what I did my doctoral dissertation on.
To be honest with you, I guess I hadn't realized that about the crew......is Freddy "Boom Boom" Washington still alive? I believe his name was Lawrence Hilton Jacobs and yes, it is a crying shame that I somehow remember that but currently don't recall where my pants are.
On a side note, I never really liked that show when it was on...it seemed SO damn stupid. But I did watch a few of the early episodes.Anyway, not that long ago one of the "oldies" networks was showing episodes and I checked a couple of them out. Holy shit...talk about a show that does NOT stand up. Horrible writing and acting. A complete mess. It definitely seems that some shows (the Honeymooners springs to mind) stand the test of time but other once popular shows do NOT. One show that I actually loved at the time, Laugh In, did not, IMHO , withstand the test of time. Saw a couple of episodes a few years ago......seemed VERY lame (although getting another chance at seeing Goldie Hawn gyrating in a tiny bikini again made it somewhat worthwhile)

In addition to John Travolta, Gabe Kaplan and Lawrence Hilton Jacobs (Washington) are still with us. Sadly, Robert Hegyes (Epstein), Ron Palillo (Horshack) and Marcia Strassman (Mrs. Kotter) are gone.

You mentioned The Honeymooners, which I regard as an all-time classic. Gleason, who was by no means a choir boy, often said that he was proudest of The Honeymooners because of how it stood the test of time without having to resort to off-color dialogue. I've watched every episode numerous times and I'm always able to find a nuance I'd never seen before. The inter-action between Gleason, Art Carney and Audrey Meadows was priceless. Sadly, they're all gone, too. So is Joyce Randolph who never received much recognition for her portrayal of Trixie.

Barbarino and Washington are still around. Epstein and Horshack died. So did Mrs. Kotter and Mr. Woodman.

Yeah, Nelson. The Honeymooners was something else entirely. Those will always be funny.

Speaking of which, some of the original Honeymooners skits from Jackie Gleason's Dumont network show, Cavalcade of Stars, are now available to watch for free on YouTube. They predate the sitcom by about 4 or 5 years.

There's even a Christmas episode that features some of the characters Gleason played for years later on his variety shows, such as Joe the Bartender, Reginald Van Gleason, Rudy the Repairman, etc. I'll post the link to it below. It's worth a look, not only for Norton and a much slimmer Ralph, but for the incredible juggler, a helluva jazz band, and even a dance act. (Maybe including some of the June Taylor girls?) Also, Alice is played by an older tough chick named Pert Kelton, who is quite a bit different from the Audrey Meadow's version, but she's pretty funny too.

Thanks for the rundown, Fats. I posted a condensed version before I saw your post. Say, I wonder what happened to Epstein's mother? ;)

Pert Kelton was an old-time comedic actress, and is not generally remembered as the original Alice. Her career took a hit during the Joe McCarthy witch-hunt in the 50s, but Gleason, the class guy that he was, brought her back for several Honeymooner appearances as Ralph's mother-in-law.

One Gleason character you failed to mention was the Poor Soul. His daughter said that she'd break into tears whenever she saw him do it.

I've spoken about Gleason here several times, and he's an original inductee in the Fats Hall Of Fame. Laurence Olivier once said that he regarded him as one of the all-time greatest actors, citing Gleason's ability to portray a broad range of emotions and characterizations. For all of his immense talent, Gleason's career was somewhat flawed by his lack of discipline, but he did it all. I don't think we'll ever see anyone like him again.

You got me wondering about Epstein's mother, Doc, so I looked her up. She was played by an actress named Lisa Mordente and appeared on one episode of Kotter as Carmen Epstein. She also has several TV credits but does not appear to be currently active. Funny, I can't remember what she looks like.

There were also a bunch of movie characters he did well, like Sheriff Buford T. Justice, Maish Rennick, and some cat called Minnesota something-or-other, just to name a few.
