One of the greatest of all Boston sports personalities, Arnold "Red"
Auerbach, passed away today at the age of 89.

RIP, Red.

Wow, they said seeing the new Celtics dance team would probably kill him but
I didn't take it seriously....

Think of how innovative that guy was, and how ballsy to light up a
victory cigar before the deciding game was even over. That almost
backfired on him once (Philly in the Garden?) but he always got
away with it. While the emphasis now is in containing celebrations
before it's over, Red, the coach, was lighting victory cigars.

I think he used to do that after he stopped coaching too. They'd
always put the camera on him when he stoked it up.

He and his cigars were good companions to the human chimney, Johnny
Most. Most was the only sports announcer to ever light himself on
fire during a game.

What a gig: Broadcasting for your favorite team high above
courtside while smoking your favorite cigs in chain link fence
fashion.

After seeing the portly Glenn Ordway on the tube tonight I was
struck by how much he has physically changed since his days with
the Celtics. He must weigh twice what he weighed then. That boy
ought to invest in a George Foreman Grill or something.

i got to know johnny most when he lived in newton.
he was friendly and very very talkative, he loved to tell stories, he had
the foulest mouth and believe it or not he had to tone himself down for the
broadcasts.
without anyone to censor him he was wild. asshole and cocksucker were two of
his favorite terms for many of the enemy players.
when the celts precticed at the hellenic college red used to have lunch at
the deli at putterham citcle, if you nodded and waved he would wave back,
but woebetide any who tried to talk to him.
i saw K.C stopped and talking to someone once in front of the newton
marriott. as cars drove by and saw him people would stop and ask for
autographs, eventually his friend left but K.C. was still getting asked by
passing motorists. he signed for everybody. it was until there was a break
in traffic that he was able to get in his car and drive off.

Red was synonomous with the Celtics. A true one of a kind. May God bless
his soul!.

I have that on tape somewhere. Classic.

He was obese even then. Can't imagine what he looks like now.

So you got to know the guy? He must have been an interesting
conversation. What would have been great would be to hear him
broadcast a Pistons game without any censorship. I can't imagine
what he would have called Sampson during the Houston series.

Red had a down home quality to him that I liked (the TV
presentation side of him.) I think he had a little Parcells in
him, or vice versa, both interesting and salty during press
conferences.

Only Red could light a victory cigar and get away with it.

I wonder if Krafty will ever figure out that he can institute a
Victory Slug of Jack Daniels up there in the box?

Now there was a seemingly quiet and introverted type, at least as
far as pubic eye professions go.

@webtv.net says...

I've seen him at C's games on occassion. Not wishing bad on anyone, but
if Ordway makes it to 60, it'll be a miracle. He really needs to get
offa being the fat happy loudmouth shtick and start worrying about his
health.
