For all the folks who felt that the Dolphins shouldn't pay a lot of
money for Todd Wade, you got your wishes. Houston coughed up $25 N
for a guy who "isn't very good" and has left the Dolphins with...
Wade Smith? as quite possibly their only returning starter from the
2003 offensive line.

If Todd Wade was too expensive, how much does Brand X cost?

They already dumped Tim Ruddy
His replacement will be Seth McKinney (aka Tim Ruddy Jr.). Don't
start believing that the Dolphins will sign Damien Woody. In your
dreams. Our defense will be lining up against Woody when they play
Buffalo this year.

Jamie Nails is a free agent.
How much are the experts willing to pay this overweight,
under-performing guard?

Todd Perry is Gone... No one wants him back.

Seven other teams will be competing for Villareal's services. The
Dolphins are the low bidders on every deal.

What Is A Player Worth?
Over the last few weeks, folks were lining up in here to take their
turns at dumping Todd Wade into the dunk tank. Despite the fact that
it was already clear that the changes on the offensive line were
already going to amount to a purge, the cries of outrage regarding
Todd's so-so value were loud. Now I suspect there will be anger that
we let him get away.

Players are worth what any team is willing to pay for them. That's
how the market works. This is a bad year to be overhauling your
offensive line. There were damn few players of any stature that were
going to be available as free agents and there are not many guards or
tackles in the draft who are getting much acclaim. Now... here are
the Dolphins: The premier day-late-dollar-short franchise in all of
free agency.

The Dolphins wanted Olin Kreutz... the Bears wanted him more.

The Dolphins wanted Kyle Turley... the Rams wanted him more.

The Dolphins wanted Mark Brunell... Washington wanted him more.

The list will grow.

They paid way too much. Wade is good but not great, and he's now paid as if
he's great. He's never made the Pro-Bowl, why pay him like a top lineman? Im
very glad we didnt pay him what he wanted. Im sure we can find a very
competent tackle in free agency or the draft for a much better price. Im
trying really hard to believe that this front office knows what its doing...
although I have no reason to.

I've heard that Woody will NOT be signing with Buffalo, that they aren't
interested.

How long before someone else signs Woody and then Coleman. And we
haven't even discussed the RT position that is now vacant.

Wait a min... we're getting a 1st and 3rd round pick for Wade??? He
was restricted or something???

BTW Miami is courting KC right tackle John Tait to possible counter
Wade's departure. Let's just hope he doesn't want too much $$$...

We get NOTHING for Wade. He means WaLe.

How many people think that a "rookie" (if we choose to select one in the
draft) will actually be ready to take on NFL D Linemen in his first season??

I think Gallery will do pretty good from the get go - not that the Fins have
a chance in hell of drafting him.

Well... Wade Smith started at LT in virtually every game last season... Of
course he pretty much sucked but why would we be concerned with THAT?

And my take on this... just ask Carr how well he thought his rookie
offensive lineman performed in their first season.

Well like ive said, I think its better to let Todd go. I'd like to think they
have grand-master plan the way they are dumping the OLine.. but I doubt they
do.

I would disagree that Wade Smith "pretty much sucked". He had a tough game
against the Colts, but being a rookie LT, I think he played pretty damn well
overall.

Why can't the Dolphins use some of the $$ they now had allocated to sign Wade
(who IMO was average at best- not a star) and look for a veteran T. Seems
pretty simple.

My opinion on the line is that is can't be worse than it was last year........
(at least I hope)

One of Wade's weaknesses is run blocking. He does fine in pass
protection but is not much of a force for the running game. His
replacement has to be a better run blocker - Ricky Williams deserves a
better blocker.

Im concerned about how long it will take the new line to gel.....Its
often stated that that is one of the biggest factors in a lines
success, is how long theyve been together etc..

That is true. But these guys are professionals and should be able to
execute basic blocking schemes from rote.

It will take time and make no mistake the is clearly a rebuilding job.

If you look at most successful Olines tho, the main thing they have in
common in continuity.....miracles do happen tho....
Iknow ive got my fingers crossed...

Plan? Wouldn't you think that if they HAD a plan that they would have
signed Todd to an extension last season? The sportswriters were predicting
this outcome a year ago - even they knew that the OL FA market was going to
be tight this year. They knew that Todd would draw a lot of interest...
and he sure did. The Texans swooped in on him like an owl on a mouse. They
screwed up our season on opening day last year and it seems they're getting
even an earlier start this year.

If people decide to rationalize this as Houston getting screwed and paying
way too much for a guy of Todd Wade's limited ability, then so be it. I'll
wager right now that Miami will spend more on an older guy to replace Mr.
Wade.

Not re-signing Wade is Miami cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Wade can't pass block. What's the sense in paying a guy this much money when
you have to give him help to do his job?

But Wade's biggest weakness was Todd Perry and one of his weaknesses was Tim
Ruddy. Wade was so much better with Boudreau as line coach. Todd Perry was a
bust and Tim Ruddy is as mediocre as they come. We should have at least
offered him something, as he was the best player on our line. If we get John
Tait from Kansas City, all will be fine as we upgrade. But if we do not
upgrade, oh the shit that will go down will not be pretty.

There could be something to that. Wade didn't improve the last few years under
Wise. Nobody seems to.

<< We should have at least

It sounded like Miami could have made a deal last year for less money. Maybe
they wanted to wait to see how he played this year and realized that he was
marginally the best of a bad line. Bottom line is that he doesn't have quick
feet and gets beaten by good pass rushers a lot. He's got great size but isn't
dominant enough to warrant that ridiculous bonus Houston gave him.

<< If we get John
Tait from Kansas City, all will be fine as we upgrade. But if we do not

He'd be a great get but I think if we get Woody and another young guard we'll
be OK as well.
