Mike White has got to go. He is pathetic as a coach. I advocated giving
him a chance 3 weeks ago, but after the debacles against Denver and Tampa
Bay . . .

RUN THE BALL you dumbass!!!! No one in the NFL ha stopped our running
game yet. What gives here?

As for the field goal attempt that Ford choked on: 1) Why kick it on 3rd
down when there isn't enough time to kick it in 4th down if the snap is
pooched. 2) Why not at least center the ball between the hash marks? Is
White mental?

In fact, given that Ford has missed 25 and 30 yarders before, why not try
to score a t.d. by giving it to Fenner twice, both arms around the ball,
and see if he can bull in?

Also, the Raiders waste more timeouts than any team I've ever watched. A
timeout is valuable. Teams lose games because they can't stop the clock,
yet Hoss or some other idiot will call a timeout on 2nd an 10 in the
middle of the 3rd quarter.

White is pathetic. Make Joe Bugel the coach, or pick up Dan Reeves after
the Giants fire him

At this point it is truly counter productive to fire White. As far
as the Raiders reaching the playoffs this year, the season is over.
Now we are playing for early draft choices and an easy schedule next
year.

I said at the beginning of the year that with Mike White as the head
coach the Raiders would be no better than .500 at mid season, at which
point White would be fired. Unfortunately, I was half wright. If Al
Davis wanted a chance at the playoffs, he would have fired White then.
He didn't, so I assume he wants to get an early draft pick instead.
Keeping White for the rest of the season will maximize our losses.
This gets us an early draft pick and an easier schedule next year.

As a long time Raider fan (29 years) this season is a very bitter pill
to swallow. But losing worked for Dallas, and maybe it will work for
us. Time will tell, because White will be the head coach until the
end of the season.

In case it wasn't clear, of course White MUST go at the end of the
season.

Agreed that White is pathetic and has to go, but don't agree that Dan Reeves or Joe Bugel
is the answer. Remember, Bugel is the O-Coordinator and is presumably responsible
for the unimaginitive play selection this year. And Dan Reeves might be the only coach
in the league who is even less creative. Yes he will run the ball, and run the ball, and run
the ball and....... (and that was when he had Elway, and no running game!)

Sorry, at this point I don't have any suggestions for who should replace White (admittedly
either Bugel or Reeves would be an improvement) and it's going to be tough to find anyone
good who will work for Al.

We need a tough guy who will instill some discipline. Ditka maybe????

Dave (who is ready to give up on the Raiders...............but ONLY after the NFL folds and there
is no more football).

At last some Raiders fans, instead of dolphins, eagles, packers, cowboys.

let's face it, the head coach isn't the only person that needs
replacing. The whole orginization from Al Davis down has been
stagnating, and the Prince of Darkness(Al) should be the first to go,
course seeing as he runs things it is extremely unlikely. There are some
good coaches on the team, but there have been some good ones before,
they all did badly until they left, like Gunther Cunningham, and Art
Shell at Kansas City (along with my boyhood here), and Dave Adolph at
San Diego, and as far the cheifs guys go, they all love it there, they
are allowed to coach, unlike in Oakland where the spectre of Al looms
over everything.

Take the case of John Fox for instance. Why did he quite a couple of
days before the season. Personal reasons my ass. Al just abused him and
his defensive staff once to often. So he stood up in the middle of a
defensive coaches meeting and told Al where to get off, welll thats what
I've heard anywhere,

Then lets look at the player aquisitions. Larry Brown?, Russel Maryland?
come on, when was the last good player plucked out of nowhere?

And then we come to the players themselves. Not many people seem to
doubt that there is alot of talent on the team, but they don't work
together, and Al lets them rule the roost. Anthony Smith punches his
coach Floyd Peters leaves the team, not once but twice, and he is still
there. Larry Brown descides he doesn't want to play, Oh dear, poor
little boy. Then there is the question why so many good players have
left the team, Patrick Bates, Scott Davis etc. Cos the atmosphere sucks.
Sure in the good old days the players could do what they wanted to, but
they also won some games.

But they are still the Raiders, and maybe in a couple of years things
will change, and we will have a team capable of beating the Cheifs.
Mmmmm...Marty, now there is a winner, I wonder? Nah, he hates Al.

Well it IS time to tell "The Emperor" (i.e. The Godfater) "He Has No
Clothes!" and if Bruce Allen is going to become the heir apparent to
this rapidly crubling empire that ONCE was Poise and Pride (niether of
which they have shown much of lately) it is time for him to wrestle
away some of Al's long held penchant for over control... coaches coach,
at least in theory... but Al doesn't seem to trust ANYONE but
himself... it is time for the passing of the tourch because his hold on
it looks too much like Ali's did last summer at the olympics...

Don't get me wrong I was and have been a big fan of both Ali and Davis
since childhood... but Ali retired and so must Al... at least from the
active day to day ON FIELD concerns... he is still a DECENT judge of
talent (Aska, Kaufman, etc.) but picks over the hill or overrated
free-agents to throw money at and trades away too many picks to develop
young talent adequately (look at our O-line for instance... and Dallas
gets a starter in the third round in Larry Allen -- PICKING LAST!!!)
His coaching choices have been poor... but as others here have said...
none of them, since Flores' last years, have been able to apply their
own will...

Yeah I thought maybe Ditka but if Al does back away I would much prefer
one of the young college coaches, ala Jimmy Johnson... like Spurrier or
Barnett, hell if he could turn Norhtwestern around why not the
Raiders??? Also Pete Carrol is doing a great job with the D across the
bay... and lord knows we need to find a way to stop the run!!!

Lots to consider in the off season...

The current crop of assistants don't seem to be likely replacements in
my opinion... if Al was interested in giving Bugel or Tillman a shot he
would have done it by now... let them finish the season and see how
they do ala Coslet in Cincy or Venturi in New Orleans... which is why
it looks like a move outside... Al's only done that once (Shanahan) and
he didn't do well with it then... mayb you can teach an OLD dog new
tricks... but it doesn't seem likely... time for The Godfather to take
a good hard, long, look in the mirror!!!

That's an excellent point. I have to agree with your reasoning that
the new head coach won't be someone currently on the staff.

I'm pretty sure you won't see him hire a coach from the college ranks.
If I had to guess, I would say it will be an assistant from the pro's.
Probably a defensive coach who is a good disciplinarian, and probably
with past ties to the Raiders. Let's face it, our defense is the
biggest bunch of underachievers in the NFL. We can't even put
pressure on the quarterback with an all out blitz! Al has always
liked a tough in-your-face kind of defense. I think our wimpy
defensive play has bothered him more than anything else.

I don't see Al deviating from his emphasis on the vertical passing
game. Picking a defensive oriented coach will allow him to push his
offensive philosophy with minimal resistance. But we need help on the
OL if the QB is to get enough time to throw long. And I'm afraid Hos
is a little too battered to be effective on a regular basis. Look for
the Raiders to try to get some help on the OL through the draft or
free agency, and to go after a strong armed QB. (I'd like to see the
Raiders get Jake Plummer from ASU. He's a real Joe Montana type QB,
except much more mobile, but I don't think he has a strong enough arm
for Al to pick him.) I suspect Jeff George will be the man, for
better or worse.

How about Mike Ditka. Now there's a disciplinarian. I think he's just
what the Raiders need. I remember when he coached the Bears. They were
being killed by the Lions at halftime. The Bears went into the locker
room ,came out a changed team and went on to win the game. It was only
the will of Mike Ditka that changed the course of that game.
That's what the Raiders need. Someone who will kick some butt and not be
overshadowed by Al Davis. They need a coach who will restore the Raiders
to greatness.

Hire Lou Holtz as the next coach. He'll run the ball all game long and
instill the much-needed discipline to the team.

I think that Pete Carroll is the way to go for next year. He did an OK
job with a bad Jets team a few years ago, and was fired (sacrificed)
very prematurely. He's firery, tough, and will be good for the defense.

Lou Holtz would be a mistake for any NFL team. He possesses an
antiquated view of the game and will not be able to accept the complex
NFL offensive strategies. I heard the Vikings are looking at him. Look
for the Vikes to have a horrible 1997 if that's the case.

I hope they at least let White stay through the season....a few more
losses will give Oakland a descent draft pick and there's really no
saving the year at this point...unless they run the tables and the
entire AFC west folds bigtime.

Scary Raider Thought #257: What if Tim Brown had signed with Denver in

As one of the biggest Raider fans ever I must say that I will not jump
off the bandwagon onto another because Oakland has fallen on hard times.
I remember the great Raider teams and legendary players of old. Stabler,
Casper,Branch,Alzado,Brown,Long,Plunkett,Lester Hayes and so on. Time
would fail me to post all the great things and people of the past. I am
also a realist. This is not a good team right now. Not enough discipline,
not enough heart or agressiveness on offense. But the Raiders will return
to full glory one day soon. No real football fan can even talk about
great football franchises without talking about the Raiders. I will wait
patiently and with great anticipation for the Oakland Raiders to return
to the yearly playoff wars. All Raider fans hang in there.
