KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas sat down with
KCTV5 in the early morning hours following the shooting near Union
Station.
Lucas reiterated there has been no change in the condition of the
victims of Thursday’s shooting where one is confirmed dead, 22 shot, and
30 in all injured.
As for a motive, none has been shared. Lucas did say three people are in
custody being questioned by police.
“We’re trying to make sure when charges are filed they stick and those
that brought harm to our community are brought to justice,” said Lucas.
When questioned about the record homicide rate in Kansas City in 2023,
the mayor urged more needs to be done.
“We need to do something about the fact that people are able to get
these guns in the first place,” said Lucas.
The mayor went on to lament about the moments immediately following the
shooting where he was separated from his wife, placed into a vehicle,
and although secured, remarked, “everyone was shaken.”
The mayor said he grew up in some “tough neighborhoods” in Kansas City
and hearing guns is not new to him, but the reality of citizens being
forced to be on alert at almost every event is.
Lucas apologized saying, “...we failed yesterday, keeping everybody safe
and that’s something I have great guilt over.”
The mayor went on to say Kansas City is strong and the city is working
to make a safer community.
Lucas said he and the police will remain as transparent as possible
without jeopardizing prosecution as the police prepare for another press
conference on Thursday morning.
The Kansas City Police Department has established a tip line dedicated
to obtaining information regarding the shooting:
816-413-3477. Anyone
who witnessed the shooting or has video has been asked to contact
investigators.
The FBI has also established a webpage for people who would like to
submit photos or videos here.
