Chiefs Continue To Build Roster, Sign 16 Free Agents

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
MAR 6 (morning)--Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that the
club has bolstered its depth, signing 15 free agents to their roster: WR
Scott Cloman, QB Marcus Crandell, WR Kirby Dar Dar, FB Chris Gall, P Nick
Gallery, C Grant Garrett, CB Ray Jackson, FB Vershan Jackson, QB Bill
Lindquist, G Rob Murphy, TE Melvin Pearsall, RB Brian Shay, LB Tim Terry, LB
Jason Thoren, C Brian Waters and G Donald Willis.
WR Scott Cloman (6-3, 200) joins the Chiefs after a brief stay as a receiver
with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League. Before playing with
the Barnstormers, the Compton, Calif. native played two seasons at Southern
University ('96-97).

QB Marcus Crandell (5-11, 205) served as a signal-caller for the CFL's
Edmonton Eskimos the last three seasons, completing nine of 22 passes for
171 yards with two TDs and three INTs in 22 games. Prior to joining the
Eskimos, the Robersonville, N.C. native enjoyed a standout collegiate career
at East Carolina from '93-96.

WR Kirby Dar Dar (5-9, 186) rejoins the Chiefs after spending training camp
with the club in '99. The special teams stalwart spent four seasons with the
Miami Dolphins ('95-98), seeing special teams duty 15 games, returning eight
kickoffs for 154 yards (19.3 avg.) while tallying 11 special teams tackles
and blocking a punt. Prior to joining the NFL ranks, Dar Dar was a star
running back and return specialist at Syracuse. In four seasons with the
Orangemen, Dar Dar posted 292 rushes for 1,337 yards with 11 TDs and caught
27 passes for 266 yards and three scores, including 853 ground yards and 10
TDs on 188 carries his senior year. The Morgan City, La., native also
produced two kickoff returns for scores at Syracuse.

FB Chris Gall (6-0, 232) joins the Chiefs after sharing time with the
Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers during the '99 preseason. Before
trying to crack the NFL ranks, the Chicago, Ill. native lined up at fullback
at Indiana, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors his senior season
in '98. In four seasons ('95-98) with the Hoosiers, Gall amassed 343 yards
on 86 carries, including seven touchdowns and a 53-yard long, while tallying
84 receptions for 665 yards with three touchdowns in 40 games (20 starts).
The River Forest, Ill., native enjoyed his best collegiate season in '98,
ranking second on the club with 30 receptions while pounding out 329 rushing
yards and seven touchdowns. In addition, Gall lost yardage on just one of
his 74 carries during his senior campaign.

P Nick Gallery (6-4, 245) begins his second stint with the Chiefs after
going to training camp with the club in '97. The Masonville, Iowa, native
was later signed to the N.Y. Jets practice squad in '97 before joining the
Philadelphia Eagles practice squad in December of '98. He also spent time
with the Miami Dolphins during training camp in '99. Gallery, a former Iowa
standout, broke all of Reggie Roby's school records for punts and punting
yardage. In four seasons with the Hawkeyes, he boomed 188 punts for 8,113
yards (43.2 avg.), including a 75-yard long.

C Grant Garrett (6-3, 301) spent the last five weeks of the '99 campaign on
the Chiefs practice squad. Prior to joining the Chiefs, the Hot Springs,
Ark., native spent the '99 training camp with the Green Bay Packers. A
three-year starter and four-time letterman ('95-98) at Arkansas, Garrett
signed with Green Bay as an undrafted free agent on May 5th of '99.

CB Ray Jackson (6-1, 207) joins the Chiefs after spending the last two weeks
of '99 on the club's five-man practice squad. Jackson originally entered the
NFL ranks as a rookie free agent with the Carolina Panthers in '98 before
joining the St. Louis Rams for training camp in '99. Prior to his time with
the Panthers, Jackson was a standout defensive back at Washington State,
seeing duty at both safety and cornerback in five seasons ('93-97) with the
Cougars. As a senior, he started eight games at free safety and four games
at cornerback, producing 41 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble
recovery.

FB Vershan Jackson (6-1, 255) rejoins Kansas City in 2000 after his '99
season came to a halt when he suffered a season-ending knee injury in an
August 15th preseason win over Tennessee. Jackson saw duty in 38 games (five
starts) at fullback and tight end at Nebraska, earning honorable mention
All-Big 12 honors at tight end as a junior.

QB Bill Lindquist (6-4, 204), a Kansas City, Missouri, native, returns to
the Chiefs for a second straight season after going to training camp with
the Chiefs in '99. Lindquist owns Benedictine College (Atchison, Kansas)
records for career completions (330) and total offense (5,971), while his
5,252 career passing yards are second-best in school annals. In 39 career
games (33 starts) with the Ravens, Lindquist stockpiled an impressive 26-7
record as a starter and took the club to three straight NAIA playoff
appearances. Lindquist prepped at Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee
Mission, Kansas.

G Rob Murphy (6-5, 305) joins Kansas City after going to training camp with
Cincinnati in '99. Prior to joining the Bengals, Murphy enjoyed a standout
collegiate career at Ohio State, where he started all 35 games he played in
with the Buckeyes. A two-time All-American from Cincinnati, Ohio, Murphy
became the Buckeyes first All-American guard since Jim Lachey in '84 and was
the school's first two-time All-American guard since Jim Parker in '55-56.
During his junior season in '98, Murphy earned first-team all-Big Ten honors
for keying a dominant offensive line that helped the Buckeyes average 199
rushing yards and 305 passing yards per game, ranking second in the
conference in those categories.

TE Melvin Pearsall (6-2, 245), a Wichita, Kansas, native, comes to Kansas
City after going to camp with Indianapolis in '98 and serving on Tampa Bay's
practice squad that same season. Before cracking the NFL ranks, the tight
end enjoyed a four-year standout career at Florida State ('94-97).

RB Brian Shay (5-8, 213), college football's all-time leading rusher and a
Paola, Kansas, native, originally joined the NFL ranks as a rookie free
agent with Kansas City in '99 and served five weeks on the club's five-man
practice squad. Shay enjoyed a standout collegiate career at NCAA Division
II Emporia State, where he was a three-time Division II All-America pick. He
owns six NCAA all-division career records: rushing yards (6,958), 200 yard
rushing games (15), all-purpose yards (9,301), total touchdowns (88),
rushing touchdowns (81) and points (544). In just four seasons with the
Hornets, he amassed 6,958 rushing yards on 1,007 totes (6.9 avg.) with 81
touchdowns to go with 110 receptions for 1,032 yards and four scores, while
also returning a punt and a kickoff for a score. Shay prepped at Paola
(Kansas) High School, leading the squad to the Kansas Class 4A State
championship as a senior when he produced a school-record 1,800 yards and 27
touchdowns.

LB Tim Terry (6-3, 240), a two-year veteran who was with Kansas City briefly
during the '99 training camp, gives the club some depth at linebacker. Terry
originally entered the NFL ranks as a rookie free agent with the Cincinnati
in '97, where he made the club's practice squad before being promoted to the
53-man roster, producing three tackles (two solo) in five games. He returned
to the Bengals in '98 and was signed to the club's practice squad in
December. Before joining the Bengals, the Hempstead, N.Y. native was a
standout linebacker at Temple, recording 208 tackles and 27 QB pressures in
44 games (43) starts, including 5.0 sacks and 11 QB pressures in 11 games as
a senior.

LB Jason Thoren (6-2, 228), a Lawrence, Kansas, native, joins the Chiefs
following a four-year standout career playing linebacker at Kansas ('94-97).
In 38 games (33 starts) with the Jayhawks he produced 304 tackles (176
solo), 3.0 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, two fumble
recoveries, four interceptions and four passes defensed. Thoren worked in
the Chiefs video department in '99.

C Brian Waters (6-3, 293) comes to Kansas City after going to training camp
with the Dallas Cowboys in '99. Before joining the Cowboys, the Watahachie,
Texas, native starred at North Texas, where he played defensive tackle and
tight end for the Mean Green. In four seasons ('95-98) at tight end, Waters
produced 86 receptions for 975 yards (11.3 avg.) and nine touchdowns in 44
games, including 62-yard long. As a senior in '98, Waters saw duty on both
sides of the ball in 11 games, tallying 45 tackles (32 solo), 5.0 sacks
(-10.0 yards), two tackles for loss and a fumble return score from his
defensive tackle post.

G Donald Willis (6-3, 348) will enter is second straight training camp with
Kansas City in '00. The former North Carolina A &T standout originally
entered the NFL ranks as a rookie free agent with Seattle in '95. Since, the
Goleta, Calif., native has made other stops with Tampa Bay and New Orleans,
playing in four games with the Saints in '96.

A 5'11" QB??? And they said Gannon couldn't see over the line. Or is
this ex-CFL guy another Flutie?

With the possible exception of Dar Dar and some of the O linement, these
guys have about as much chance as making the squad as I do. IMO, they were
brought in for one reason only....to give the starters someone to smack
around during practice. As far as Dar Dar is concerned, Vanover ought to be
sharpening his burger flipping skills because, whether or not Dar Dar is
better, this is likely to be the guy we see returning punts and KO's

I saw Brian Shay at training camp and in limited action in preseason. I
believe he has the posability to make a mark in the NFL. He was on the
practice squad last year and the Chiefs are sending him to NFL Europe this
season. I'll be watching the NFL Europe with a little more interest this
season. BTW the Chiefs are sending 11 players to the NFL Europe this year.
Here's a list from kcchiefs.com

Chiefs Send 3 Quarterbacks To NFL Europe, Including White

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
MAR 7 (morning)--Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Tuesday that
the Chiefs have allocated 11 players to NFL Europe for the 2000 season.
Three quarterbacks-Ted White, Bill Lindquist and Marcus Crandell-are among
the group of Chiefs who will represent the club in the league that kicks off
on April 15 and culminates with the World Bowl 2000 in Frankfurt, Germany on
June 25. A total of 154 current NFL players were allocated to the six NFL
Europe teams for the 2000 campaign.
QB Ted White (6-2, 225), who earned a spot on the Chiefs roster as a rookie
free agent in '99, will take snaps with the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe
this spring. The Baton Rouge, La., native spent the first 10 weeks of the '
99 campaign on the Chiefs practice squad before being promoted to the club's
53-man active roster on November 22nd. White, a former standout
signal-caller at Howard, set school and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
career records with 9,713 passing yards and 92 touchdown tosses, while also
setting career marks with 638 completions on 1,169 attempts in 38 games (all
starts) with the Bison. The agile White also carried the ball 199 times for
131 yards and six touchdowns.

QB Bill Lindquist (6-4, 204), a Kansas City, Mo., native, will also play
quarterback with the Frankfurt Galaxy this spring. Lindquist, who prepped at
Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, Kan., owns Benedictine College
(Atchison, Kan.) records for career completions (330) and total offense

(5,971), while his 5,252 career passing yards are second-best in school
annals.

QB Marcus Crandell (5-11, 205) will be shouting out the signals for the
Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe this spring. He served as a signal-caller

for the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos the last three seasons, completing nine of 22
passes for 171 yards with two TDs and three INTs in 22 games.

RB Brian Shay (5-8, 213), college football's all-time leading rusher and a
Paola, Kan., native, will carry the pigskin for the Berlin Thunder in NFL
Europe this spring. Shay originally joined the NFL ranks as a rookie free

agent with Kansas City in '99 and served five weeks on the club's five-man
practice squad.

FB Vershan Jackson (6-1, 255) will open some holes for Shay and other Berlin
Thunder running backs this spring. Jackson rejoins Kansas City in 2000 after

his '99 season came to a halt when he suffered a season-ending knee injury

in an August 15th preseason win over the Tennessee Titans.

C Grant Garrett (6-3, 301) spent the last five weeks of the '99 campaign on

the Chiefs practice squad and will play with the Berlin Thunder of NFL
Europe. Garrett originally entered the NFL ranks as an undrafted free agent
with the Green Bay Packers in May of '99.

C Brian Waters (6-3, 293) will see duty with the Berlin Thunder this spring

after going to training camp with the Dallas Cowboys in '99.

G Rob Murphy (6-5, 305) will hone his skills with the Frankfurt Galaxy in
NFL Europe after going to training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals in '99.

LB Jason Thoren (6-2, 228), a Lawrence, Kansas, native, will play for the
Berlin Thunder this spring following a four-year standout career playing

linebacker at Kansas ('94-97).

CB Ray Jackson (6-1, 207) will see action with the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL
Europe this spring. Jackson spent the last two weeks of '99 on the Chiefs
five-man practice squad.

P Nick Gallery (6-4, 245) will boom punts for the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL
Europe this spring. Gallery, who begins his second stint with the Chiefs
after going to training camp with the club in '97, spent time with the Miami

Dolphins during training camp in '99.

HELLO...are you new to the NFL? What you are are critical of is and has been
status quo in the league for years. I'm sure some Rams "fans" with an attitude
like yours said the same thing about Kurt Warner.

Training Camp last year, they cut him...then resigned him to the practice

couldn't even stay on the practice squad? It'll be interesting to see how
he works out this summer.

BTW, what's up with a 5'11" QB? Are we going to install an option type
offense and let this guy run or what?

I think the fact that they keep having him back speaks highly of how the
Chiefs view his potential. Many players need time to develope being just
out of college. The thing about the NFL is playing time is at a premium so
development and evaluation time in game situations isn't easy to comeby for
a young back who has marginal height. The NFL Europe will be an excellent
time for him to show whether his standout college career is true NFL caliber
talent or if he was just under matched in college.

Desperate for something to complain about, huh? Every team
goes out and gets a bunch of bargain-basement guys for
training camp. It gives them extra tackling dummies, and
you never know when you'll find that guy who's been
overlooked in the past. Once teams have to start trimming
down to fewer players, most of those guys will be gone from
every team.

Two words: Jessie Haynes

He's a body. I wouldn't take these signings too seriously. At best,
probably a couple of these guys make the team. At worse, none do. They're
simply adding depth to the roster, and hopefully in the process they'll get
lucky on a couple guys. Every year this happens. They sign a bunch of
slugs (like every other team in the NFL), and then they get ripped that
they're signing these guys instead of All Pros. It's basically meaningless.
Most of these guys are NOT expected to make the roster, let alone
contribute.

No more of a joke, really, than some idiot on Road Runner who doesn't

I understand that, but why sign a guy who has absolutely NO chance to make
the grade? Shouldn't we gear our signings to someone who may actually turn
into something? If a body is all that's needed, there's a guy living under
the Paseo Bridge that is pretty good size and may have actually thrown a
football once or twice in his life. I'm sure he'd come cheaply too! <G>

How do you know these guys have "absolutely NO chance?"

Also, there are salary cap concerns, even for guys who aren't going to make
the final grade. You can't just spend at will and create an expensive 100
man roster.
