I need to know this so I can remix a whole bunch of Esham and Dayton Family
albums.

It's not really easy Rob. Most people use cd dj's. Slowing up the
music isn't the problem, it's the chopping. You need 2 sound cards
and Serrato or something. You can do it on Audition or Ableton... but
it's a long process.

If you want solely software... get Audition... you can use PITCH
BENDER to slow tracks up. Usually anywhere between 3 and 5 semitones
is good. Then save the track and open up two cpies in multitrack.
then you actually have to cut the pieces where you want the chops.
It's a bitch.

I do a lot of slowing in my mixes, but not much chopping. Chopping is
a live sport, and I'm currently a studio dj.

for something like that I'd suggest Audition (formerly Cool Edit and
on a 2gig you might want to hunt down an older copy of Cool Edit - you
can still pitch bend, just some of the effects are cheaper sounding.)

for reference here's some stuff I had done for mixes:

Kid Cudi - Sountrack 2 My Life (Slurred and Blurred)

C-Funk - Here He Comes (Slurred and Blurred)

find a copy of ableton and give it a shot. it might not be what you're
looking for, but it can work for the chopping part with a little effort
or a decent midi controller. if you have a controller that can scrub
well, you can set that up, put the same track on the A and B sides of
the crossfader and pretty much do it like i imagine you'd do it on real
decks (in principle, at least, the feel would be totally different, of
course). alternatively, you could set up all the queue points to where
you want the chops to be, or you could set the quantize to what you want
to chop by and hit the skip backward/forward by the quantize amount
button to do the chopping. either way, you'll need something to do the
continuous crossfader motion, but it lets you do the chopping with
buttons (or keys on the keyboard) without needing a controller that does
a good job of scrubbing (which is typically the domain of pricier more
specialized controllers).

If you do it 'Live' in Ableton, it's no problem at all, you don't even
need the extra sound card for the cue, just start the one that's not
playing an 1/8 note ahead of the one that is and it will stay exactly
1/8 ahead thru the whole track (assuming its warped properly)
A crossfader would be great here, but you can always assign keyboard
keys to the crossfader if not.

It works good, I will demonstrate if anyone knows a video
screencapture app with sound

I just realized the OP asked for FREEWARE

I would guess that the free version of Acid would work for this as
too, using the method I described.

The secret for processing Rap the right way - take the files you've
created, highlight them, hit the "delete" button. Then empty your
recycle bin.

liked all these tracks, btw.

it's funny, i got home the other night and listened to that MJG, and it
was the second time in an hour i heard a "tom's diner"
interpolation/sample in a hip-hop track (the other being some drake song
on the radio driving home from work).

that's pretty much what i've done the couple times i've tried to C&S
stuff in ableton. the only problem is, it sounds a little *too* on
time. sloppy chopping's no good, but having things be that precise
sounds a bit off too.

i haven't tried it, but i have a feeling that a midi controller that
worked decently for scrubbing (so you wouldn't always have to be exactly
1/8 or whatever off) or taking the time to set up good cue points and
triggering them with pads would be the way to go and would end up
sounding a bit more natural.

thanks Suntzu... I'm doing what I'm doing and have a few fans. Some
old friends, others truly people I met doing this. Feedback is always
really constructive and exicting. Obviously, I do it for me, but
since I put it out there, I'm interested in how others perceive it.

I encourage all people to screw and chop.

But I wish others would learn to chop better! A lot of people just seem to
randomly time them...I think they should just be used sparingly, to accentuate
the lyrics IMO
